I have an old 78rpm of Earl Bostic with Embraceable You & Night & Day which was popular during the era of instrumentals many years ago (1950s) . Earl Bostic had an individual sound with that raspy, growly tone which was unique & instantly recognisable. Thanks for explaining his use of a Tenor Reed on the Alto Jamie. I had no idea of this. As a result I have tried this out & it works for me. My Alto sounds just great now with a broader tone & volumn. I am no Earl Bostic, but thanks again for some very useful information & your super videos. Stormin Norman.

.... I remember the first “records” I got my hands on as a child. Pappa and mom's old portable record player that was “bequeathed” to me ... transportable, in a case covered with lime green fabric, the (mono) box was in the lid, which you could also loosen and put further away, at least as far as the cable reached. The tonearm and the switch buttons (almost levers) were made of piss-yellowish white Bakelite plastic, that was my high-tech stuff back then. And I even remember the first record I pulled out of the bundle of (mainly my mother's) old records: “Flamingo!” Recently, I googled this song, blessed by memory, and came across a great version, but then,...I googled further,...for the original. as I once heard it, from a thick black disk spinning at 78round per any minute on the rubber-covered plate (also lime green, by the way). And then I realized: shoe polish and shit look almost the same, but smell totally different. Thanks to old Earl (r.i.p.), it's your fault that I haven't managed to get rid of this sound to this day. Love you and your sound!

@@GetYourSaxTogether Love your channel! Thanks for doing a props to Earl Bostic, one of my all-time favorite Sax players. You'll love his album 'Bostic Rocks Hits Of The Swing Age ( Full Album )'--you can find it here on youtube, it's about 30 min. There's some gritty, nasty Sax playing on that album! You'll love it.

First he said he was going to play an alto with a tenor reed, then it got crazier.... Altissimo mezzo allegro!

Any saxophonist or student should know about all the greats, including Bostic. If not, you’re not doing enough.

You know he's a good player when a professional sounds like a tea kettle trying to reproduce the sound. And that's not a dig at you but Bostic is absolutely insane.

Earl Bostic has been my favorite musician for the past 3 years. His tone, technique, and arrangements have had a huge influence on my musicianship lol. If you want another great recording of his, I recommend a tune Telstar Drive. He plays a 12 bar blues at 300 bpm for about 5 minutes and he churns out some amazing lines all throughout. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX26k4ibhs9joLc here’s the link to the song 😊

Telstar Drive - Earl defines "smokin' sax"! Wonder if the term "Duke of Earl" should really refer to Earl Bostic.
