Apparently one of my visitors in the tavern turned into a were-gecko. But at the same time I had a were-kangaroo outside massacring people. All I saw 😭 were blood and vomit inside the fortress and outside and idk if the were-gecko killed the dwarves inside too or did the were-kangaroo got in…so…much…carnage 😭

that's nothing, years ago they was a bug that when you had a really overweight dwarf roaming through the fortress it would lag the game to a grinding halt because the game was trying to calculate it's current weight.

I noticed in this video or in your Quick Tutorial Temple video, you didn't mention musical instruments. Musical instruments are one of the most confusing things about Dwarf Fortress because they are procedurally generated by the world setup, like the history is, and they vary from world to world. They are hard to make because of this since most instruments are multi-piece constructions that are often made in different workshops. A tutorial on musical instruments would be great!

The thing that drives me crazy is that very often the game won't let you place instruments. It keeps claiming there aren't any available, even if you stockpile them in the very room you're trying to place them in.

@@reliantncc1864 place a chest in the room and then they'll put the instrument in the chest. thats the only way i know of that they can use them

@@reliantncc1864 you may only have parts, you need to assemble them, otherwise you need a chest in the room for them to be stored in and then you should be able to place them from regular build menu. Only certain ones are placeable. I usually just trade for instruments instead of fiddling with building them until my dwarves are producing masterwork components.

Agreed, if the instruments kept the same name and you had to make the multipiece objects, that would have been an acceptable difficulty, but every world has different instrument names, with varied pieces AND with new names each time .

I think the mugs in the chest only get used if you have a tavern keeper...otherwise it might keep the mugs away from your regular dwarves hands.

Great vid, thanks for the guide. This has triggered an idea for me, in another it is mentioned that there is no way to set "residents only" on doors to stop non residents from entering parts of the fortress. I wonder if you can use a Tavern? Could you place a tavern with restriction of residents only in the middle of a corridor that leads to part of the fortress, thus stopping other visitors from going beyond the tavern and into "restricted areas"? No idea if this would work but I might give it a go

At 6:53 you show your inns details, but it says there are no rented rooms out of no rented rooms. Is that just a UI bug or am I missing something in associating the dorm with it? Or it it because it's a dorm and not individual rooms, it's not part of that?

Hey, can you make a video about managing your foods and drinks? I get the basics, but I'm struggling with a good production line. Maybe you can give some general advice so forts with 50+ dwarfs dont die of starvation / dehydration.

For the basics you can set up work orders to make x amount of meals if less than y meals are available and more than z cook able items are available. Same with drinks. Otherwise you can farm (he has a guide on that) or butcher animals or gather fruit and leaves from the surface or set someone to hunt if you have wild animals that you can butcher. Make sure you have barrells to hold all your food and drink and set up food stockpiles because I believe that slows food from rotting

Also if i recall correctly your saying by having the beds not part of the inn / tavern zone. that they are seperate now? will they still be able to request to stay in dormitory? because im evil and like to set up my fort entrance to be the tavern / inn with visitors acting as my first line of defense in siege.

Do skills matter for a Tavern keeper? It's showing me dwarves with high social skills first (like pacifier, persuader, negotiator, and judge of intent) but I wanted my brewer to be the tavern keeper and she's 2nd last on the list. My bowyer is a great pacifier and adept negotiator, but I'm not sure how busy he'll be with his workstation when I start producing crossbows. Now that I look closer it looks like I can choose more than one?

Question: Does the dormitory/bedrooms have to be right next to the tavern connected with a door? My setup looks different but I did everything the same otherwise. Only difference being that the visitors go downstairs to a hallway with different doors to bedrooms. Unfortunately none of them are ever used. (They are all assigned as bedrooms and each is connected to the according tavern)

No, that's perfectly fine. You just have to be wary of visitors wandering deeper into your fort than you'd like.

My main strategy is building a bridge at the front to block off the entrance, and make a secondary trap hallway. Bridges are indestructible currently, which might seem like cheating to some. Also start your military training asap with armor and weapons. The earlier they start training the better

If I understood it right, this room should be a separate zone that is a Dormitory but this zone is then added to the same *location*, namely the tavern.

Apparently dormitories + taverns don't work together for visitors. When you open the details of a tavern associated with a dorm you'll see no rooms available for rent. So if you wan your tavern to be an in, you'll have to make rooms.

Can you earn money from selling drinks and lodging to travlers? I would think "The higher the quality of the tavern, the more likely they are to buy more drinks and the better the sleeping room(s) the more they will pay to rest". And it would need a storage/chest that only accepts coins, so it's no stored with the mugs, where everyone might steal it.

You can use them as your fort’s dining hall, but they carry fundamentally more danger with them if you have them open to visitors :)

Idk about new steam DF, but in old stuff ya need to (B)uild a Farm (P)lot, once prepared it'll give you sowing options.

Also make sure your farm plot is underground. Plump helmets don't grow in open space.

A quick question! Does the Tavern Keeper job, overtake all other possible Labors? Like, can i have a Brewer that is also a Tavern Keeper? Similar to how Administrators can be themselves Adminstrators (Leader,Manager,Broker,Etc) and still have Labors?

This video was a huge help, however I’m still a bit confused. I’ve put cups, goblets and mugs in chests in my tavern, the dwarves refuse to drink from them. Instead drinking straight from the barrel, even though there’s a chest full of cups right next to them.

If you set up a tavern keeper. It's the tavern keepers job to fill cups with alcohol and hand them out. But this only works if there's alcohol in the tavern.

@@BlindiRL there’s a stock pile of wine right inside the tavern, but the tavern Keeper just seems to stand there. The dwarves just walk up to the stock pile in the tavern and drinks from the barrels. I honestly don’t know how to fix this.

I put a small stockpile of mugs as well as a chest. Citizens who self serve grab from the stockpile. (It also helps because I set the quality of the mugs higher so we're using the good mugs and selling the garbage.)

So a quick question, I heard some people say it's worth having a secondary tavern near the entrance of your fort, so any would be invaders have to go through a room full of drunk ornery mercenaries. Is it better to have 2, or just one main one that anyone can use close to the entrance? I'm just not sure how that would work with two stockpiles sharing drinks and dwarves socializing etc. Seems like it's more effort than it's worth.

ive done all this, but ive yet to get any visitors. i dont think i ever had this problem in orginal DF. i have a tavern keeper and 4 performers, musical instruments, mugs, food and drink, everything. two dwarves have already died of alcohol poisoning, including the queen, who somehow became queen while in my fortress, even though i think it was smaller than a hamlet at the time

There was an issue with "Maximum interface width" (in settings > video), it was set in pixels and would not automatically set itself to your full resolution width. However, I just looked, and it seems there has been an update, and now that setting is "Maximum interface percentage", so just make sure that's set to 100%, and you should get the full-width status bar at the top with the stocks listed.

You need guests to arrive first, Also they are not really rented as there is no real form of currency in dwarf fortress.

The main problem with taverns is the incredible amount of spam an open one causes: in my last fort I had 200 pop, of which 100 were wandering performers and bards. The solution is obviously to not let them stay, as citizens inherited via petitions can't do things like join the military... :/

We’ll you catch butcher dwarves if that’s what you’re saying. Barring certain circumstances But you can go to a butchers workshop and set a task to butcher an animal. I believe it should auto butcher but that might be somewhere in labor menu standing orders

Dwarves do it automatically depends on the Zone if its a chest in a bedroom the occupant will place his personal belongings in the chest if its a inn/tavern the dwarves automatically just stuff mugs in the chest

Im gonna base my kindgom around Mushroom Kingdom, but plump helmets. The only other thing spoiled was the water peoples ability-- from a video i saw about someone explaining an artifact instrument getting stolen constantly.
