HOnestly that is what made the couple so compelling; these deep, intense, conversations they had. They were quite cerebral and emotional and the whole storyline brought you in and let you play witness to something that was so out of the ordinary, yet so intriguing an weirdly relatable. The emotions TG and GF played during this storyline were incredible. It was amazing to be able to be moved and intrigued by both characters. It was such smart/cognitively challenging/ emotional material.

THERE IS A BOND BETWEEN LUKE AND LAURA THAT CAN'T BE EXPLAINED. EVEN THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT, OR WHY THEY FEEL THIS WAY FOR EACH OTHER. THEY PROTECT ONE ANOTHER WHEN HARM COMES THEIR WAY. I love these two so much. Thank you for sharing their legacy with us. They were so perfectly acted and so well written. You understood their mutual respect for each other, even when such a terrible act stood between them. You understood Laura's admiration of Luke's loyalty, strength and soul-- and you understood Luke's admiration of Laura's kindness, gracious heart, and forgiving nature. They have such a sincere dynamic, such passion. They were so developed and so carefully explored as characters that, even with flaws like Luke's aggressive ruthlessness, and Laura's self-centered naiveté, you loved them and wanted their happiness. And after watching the development of their relationship (no matter the controversy and horror of their early days), you understood that eventually, their happiness is really with each other. They understood each other like no one else in their lives. They share a fervent respect for the other that gives their mutual fixation true depth. It is a love story that is incredibly crafted, despite the odds, and that's what captured imaginations...it's rather a pity that the drama, truth, ache, pain, forgiveness, love and complexity of their narrative has been reduced to "People were sick back then! How could they support rape?!"

Yes I can see that I don’t think anyone of us where ever blind to there characters and there flaws. There love for one another was deep and sometime dark. Confusing mixed emotions but there respect for each other was is and always well be real, true and for them at the time. For they thought it would last a life time. L&L relationship can't be based on that...

Writers of many shows now (not just soaps) write for the attention deficit viewer. It's all so fast paced with no real character or story development. Half the time I could care less about a character & when I do, 3 episodes later they're someone completely different than who I bought into. I loved the storyline of Luke, Laura, Scotty & Bobbie. & at any given point I either loved or loved to hate them. Point being, I cared enough to tune in to follow them. Knotts Landing was so much like that. For example even when Valene Ewing became successful in her own right, she was still that shy little southern girl but just in the big city. Today I tried Greys Anatomy & Scandal. Greys is murder central of favorite characters like GH became & I just no longer care about the characters on Scandal b/c they're all over the place. This is why I'm being nostalgic with GH. I wish someone would upload all of GH. Knotts Landing I'm sure I can purchase somewhere. Thanks to susequz for making this playlist.

I watched Scandal too, mainly for Olivia and Fitz and their nuclear-level chemistry and impossible complicated love. But after Season 3 I stopped watching because it got too crazy and confusing. This old Luke and Laura remind me of early Liv and Fitz.

Well to be fair Luke himself brings up the irony. The point they were trying to drive home is that Laura was surrounded by people always judging her and treated her like she was beneath them. Especially Scotty.

The circumstances of the relationship was definitely unconventional but in the end it seemed to work. I think that Laura felt like she could talk to Luke about anything because he didn't treat her like a little girl. Even though he had done a terrible thing she also knew that he wasn't a terrible person. Also ready lot of comments about the storyline not matching with the storyline in the future they could have done a little better but again it's a soap.

That's an interesting perspective but very different than what Ms. Francis has to say about the situation and she knows her character better than any of us. She says Laura KNEW she loved Luke when he came to visit her in the hospital the day after the rape with the flowers... so she had to love him before.

I think Laura was in love with Luke well before the rape. She had a connection with him she never had with anyone else. It took a long time for her to figure out because of her youth, immaturity and determination to prove that she had grown up via her marriage to Scotty.

Laura was not self centered/selfish when Leslie first tracked her down and removed her from the Vining home. She was a very unhappy girl because she had been taken from the Vining's (and Amy). She used to run away back home if I remember correctly. Then her early teen years were rough but who can blame her. Scottie was her boyfriend, she like many young girls want to be "a bride" and Loved. She already had experienced David Hamilton. By the time she met Luke, she had been through a lot. She was fascinated by him. He was not Daddy, Step Daddy, David Hamilton or Scottie. Both Genie and Tony said at different times when asked when Laura fell in love, and they both said when he visited her in the hospital after the rape is when she realized it.

SHE CRIED IN THE HOSPITAL BECAUSE SHE HAD TO FACE THE TRUTH ABOUT HER MARRIAGE, THE RAPE, AND HER STRONG LOVE FOR LUKE. SHE DID TRY TO FIGHT THE BOND BETWEEN THEM. LOVE WON OUT IN THE END...

They didn't want to make it excusable. The story was written originally for Luke to die shortly after the rape during the Mitch Williams hit in Laura's arms asking for redemption.... so hindsight is 20/20. But none the less it was an extremely compelling tale.

I think i have watched these clips at least 10x's each!!!LOL Do you have any scene's from before the rape? If you recall we were already running home to see L&L "Before" the rape, because of the cat & mouse game that had started months earlier. I feel it's the reason the rape worked so well. That big argument we all had the day after the rape...Was it or was'nt it? I said from day one "Was not rape"! It was even on the NEWS that night, LOL.

I thought the same thing. The writers really messed up Luke’s exit. I saw it again a few weeks ago. Luke’s father left him and Bobbie alone after his mother died? She died of a burst appendix?! Then the writers magically added another sister Virginia. She was never brought up once in over 30 years. The current writers do not even care about the soaps history. Agh it’s so frustrating. That’s why I like the older episodes better.

but that was so Laura. She was a spoiled, self centered princess. I loved how the writers allowed her to be so true to form to the point that she couldn't even pause to consider that someone else might be going through something. I also loved that although Luke knew this was a character trait of hers, he fully accepted it even while keeping it real with her. I enjoyed the era of Scotty & Laura. He would've eventually ripped her apart for her self centeredness because he could only love a certain aspect of Laura. He was ultimately her knight in shining armor & he expected that she would be made whole by his love. Luke on the other hand was obsessed with everything about Laura. The good, the bad, the ugly & he could handle her/manage her. lol. loved Luke & Laura & this comments was nothing personal. I'm loving this reminiscing on a day off : )

Seriously the original story was compelling.. what Tim Spencer did was bad enough, but there was a fine line he didn't cross... walking out.. she didn't die at his hand. Now they have to turn Tim Spencer into a REALLY bad dude because the hero's of the show are gangsters and hit men. It is so shallow. This was so much more compelling, shades of gray.. not the lame black and white (reversed) that we get on current day GH.

thanks for breaking it down, sus. I actually liked when TPTB revisited the rape, during the 90's. There were some great scenes and the way they tied it into Liz's rape was smart writing. It kicked off Liz and Lucky as a couple.

Oh! I get it now, I didn't the first time I heard of these two. All I kept hearing was "the rapist and his victim fall in love and get married etc etc" now I think I have the full depth of their story. But when they tried making what happen between them as a what's it's called "accidental seduction". It's hard to do that when they shot Laura screaming "No! Luke don't!" and so on. Then years later we see L and L argue about the whys of that evening.

No! I'm going to explain it. Ever since luke met laura he had a obssesion with her. At first laura thought they we're friends. Eventually she was NOT in love with luke till after the rape.
