Here's how to achieve the hyperlapse look the easy way using a Panasonic GH5 or GH5S.
Using the cameras' VFR mode you can shoot video at 2 frames per second and get a hyperlapse-like result complete with motion blur by filming on a gimbal.
When locked down on a tripod this will also give you a good timelapse effect, although the shutter is going to be limited to 1/2 a second, and timelapses tend to look better with a 2 second shutter, albeit at a cost of time in filming and editing.

I definitely prefer practical in camera effects - however if you don't have the time (or access to nds) then Reel Smart Motion blur by revision does a great job of adding pretty convincing motion blur in post. I use this a lot for outdoor hyperlapses with my olympus 7-14 (its a pain to get nds on there) to give that nice frame to frame blur. I also use it for drone shot ramps. on the zhiyun crane v 2 i use the lock off yaw setting (push camera mode button once) all the time - which makes steady hyper push ins, side wards dollies and pull outs super easy. Like your delivery by the way - very professional and clear.

Good shout, thanks for the insight on the motion blur! I'm on the same gimbal and use that too- really useful mode! I use it for a smooth pan action as well using the joystick to keep the speed uniform, that's if I have time to adjust the sensitivity of the joystick-controlled pan speed which takes some trial and error, detracting somewhat from the ease of this method :) Thanks a lot for the comment!

Thanks James! The opening track is Raices by Tomas Novoa, I got it from artlist.io :) I'm not familiar with the G9, but doesn't it have a photo-based timelapse mode? If it's like the GH5, you'd be able to set the interval and number of shots and still just walk on a gimbal with it for RAW hyper lapses, would just mean you wouldn't need to hold the shutter down.

@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 жыл бұрын
I’m not pulling focus at all, as the shutter speed is so long you can stop the aperture down a lot and get a deep depth of field. It also helps that I was mainly on the 7.5mm, it’s so wide that almost everything is in focus when it’s set to infinity!

What should be my shutter angle if I want the right amount of motion blur? I am usually in that mode, not shutter speed mode. It looks like for a 24p output this is what I came up with: 360 angle = 1/24 speed (not possible with film @24 fps) 180 angle = 1/48 speed. 144 angle = 1/60 speed. 90 angle = 1/96 speed. 72 angle = 1/120 speed. 45 angle = 1/198 speed. So, that's not enough blur, right?
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 жыл бұрын
Mitch Summers hi Mitch, small confession: I never use shutter angle in VFR mode! I would test to confirm, but I’d say in VFR at 2fps it would make a shutter angle of 180 equivalent to 1/4. You’ll soon know if it’s actually giving you a pleasing motion blur on people moving in your frame, or if it’s sharp then you know it’s going to need to be closer to 360!
@MitchSummers
@MitchSummers 5 жыл бұрын
@@ShotByMyles No worries! It seemed better at 360 than 180 for sure in a test around the house. To be safe, I set it back to shutter speed for this C3-2 custom setting. Thank you!
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 жыл бұрын
Mitch Summers ok I’ve had a quick test and it looks like shutter angle takes in to account the VFR frame rate even if the base frame rate remains 24 / 25P... so I’d actually recommend 180d shutter angle (1/4 second), especially if you have moving objects quite close to the camera. It’s personal preference, but I did this around a city centre at both 180d (1/4 second) and 360d (1/2 second) and the people close to me were obscure blurs at 1/2 (too much so), and the surroundings were sharper at 1/4. Think the example in this video was at 1/4 (180d) except for the really wide shot on a tripod which was at 360d to exaggerate the blur of the far away people 👍🏻 Good luck with it!

I use the Zhiyun Crane v2 which doesn’t have focus pulling and can’t support the Sigma 18-35, but it does a job and by now those should be really cheap if you find one 👍🏻 Meantime you can test this locked off on a tripod for just a regular timelapse. The shot of the families around the Christmas tree was done that way, the planning to the train was just done in post.

Great video!! Im a professional tattoo artist and i wanna do time-lapse with my gh5. What settings do you recommend? Tnx in advance
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles Жыл бұрын
Tbh you can still use this method and settings in the video, but for max quality (at the cost of more time in post) you could do a photo timelapse. A shutter speed of about half a second to a second is what will give you the motion blur, and then you need to think about how much footage you want. For a 10 second timelapse at 25 fps you’d need 250 frames, so if you’re filming a 2 hour process you’d need to be taking a picture at least every 30 seconds (2 phots a minute, 240 photos in 120 minutes). A half second shutter speed is quite long so you might need an ND filter to stop your footage being over exposed. Enjoy!

@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 жыл бұрын
kyrt667 I’ve used the timelapse feature for timelapses but never while walking mid-shot like this... walking on a gimbal in the photo-based timelapse mode would give a really similar look except higher quality (from it being RAW photos and not video) at the cost of a lengthier editing process for the photos and larger files. Like you say with this one it’s fairly simple to keep an eye on things and review straight after :)

Thank you very much for this video man, the GH5 is so capable, just gotta figure out how to use it! One question though, on VFR mode I found you can't use the back button focus trick, so how are you keeping your subject in focus while moving towards it? I guess you can keep your aperture closed down so it's easier to focus. But do you set it to autofocus or keep it in manual mode? I'm headed to Italy this weekend and want to try this out and I think this would be helpful to know. Thanks again man!
@ShotByMyles

Cheers Robert! Yes VFR disables autofocus, so you can’t use the back button or continuous AF I’m afraid. So on a gimbal for this type of stuff I use a wide lens (larger depth of field already) I stop down the lens as you say and set focus to infinity :) Enjoy Italy!

Hi, Myles! What would you suggest I do if I wanted to do a hyperlapse like this but without a gimbal?
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, without a gimbal I think you'd have to do the old school method of taking a photo, moving a step forward, getting the framing the same and taking another photo etc etc. It's important you keep a single object at the middle of the frame throughout so that when you join them up they are quite stable and the framing doesn't change.

@@ShotByMyles is there an in-camera feature on the GH5 that I can use to do a hyperlapse so I don't have to stitch them up in editing? Do you think the timelapse/stopmotion feature can create something like this?
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 4 жыл бұрын
Yes there is a timelapse function to be fair that can produce a video file in-camera, it could be tricky though in a scenario where you’re moving because you’ll need to be in position at the moment it fires every time! I’m sure it’s do-able but either you’ll be using a long interval to make sure you are in position in which case you’re wasting time, or it’ll be too fast and you’ll miss shots. What program do you edit on? If it’s FCPX you can import photos in a timeline and make a video from them fairly easily, you can select all and change duration to 1 frame 👍🏻

@@markfriday Obviously shooting video in VFR mode as shown in this video will give you a time-lapse with no photos, which is good for a gimbal or tripod (or anywhere you can prop it up!) but no good for walking... On the regular time-lapse mode for photos it asks you to create the video when you end the time-lapse, and you can do that and then delete the photos in one go (it treats them as a group) but I don't think there's a way to automatically delete the photos. I must say I don't know about your second question on the icons, sorry! Hope it works out for you though

@@ShotByMyles Ok so I was testing out the time-lapse comparison there on a motorway bridge; recording video onto the NinjaV in prores and then capturing stills photography onto the GH5's SD card in time-lapse mode and comparing. So IMO the Cons are; 1). a 10 minute 4k video is near 22GB whereas the raw photos make 6GB in total and 2). I imagine the flexibility in editing is reduced compared to what you can get out of raw photo files. I don't know how much by or if it will actually be a big enough deal, could vary project by project I haven't started grading either sets yet. But the Pros though I would say, if you are looking for a quick video, no-to-little grading, straight to KZbin-type or just out on a test shoot, this actually looks pretty good and has the same effect or motion/look....until of course I start grading the pair of them, then we'll see who wins. I tried a few at 1sec intervals also and it looked smoother but again this is objects coming towards with static world, rather than the camera walking forward. (I was also using a SliderOne motorised slider tracking left and right.) Besides, I'm not sure I could walk forwards with a gimbal at ¼ Shutter speed anyway and take stills without everything being blurred so its either tripod the stills style of TL or gimbal the TL video style. Wait...if im walking with video at 2fps, shutter speed ¼....thats the same thing right? Just checking the numbers here, ; Stills TL settings for this motorway shot should be 2sec Interval, 4 on the Shutter speed (=¼) (or even 1sec Interval and 2 SS, as long as it's doubled) but video TL it's 2FPS and 4 SS. Those should create the exact same effect right? (There's no need to think about interval because thats what the FPS translates to in this case in video.) So how can you move the camera (walking forwards) and not get total blur everywhere? Is that seriously the gimbal fixing all that? Sorry just re-watched the video, you do make a real point of stating this....but man that's amazingly in focus compared to what I thought it would be walking with those settings!

@@SaiKelly I found the video footage to be a lot smaller for file sizes compared to shooting stills, but that's using VFR mode saving to the SD cards and not Ninja V! It should only be capturing 2 video frames per second so I'm really surprised if a ProRes frame is larger than a RAW still... I didn't think you could shoot VFR mode in to a Ninja, or was that just slow motion? Yeah man it's the gimbal that smoothes out the footage! I mean nothing ever is truly sharp at a shutter of 1/4 when you're walking with the camera, but it's passable if your subject is central, far away and you're walking straight :) Stills interval of 2 a second with 1/4 shutter is the same as VFR mode at 2, yeah!

@@ShotByMyles Bud I tried it today and it worked well! Really surprised with the result, especially when you're watching the video feed and seeing nothing but blur. But it plays back so well as you say, its only when you pause it that you realise nothing's perfectly crisp. The brain fills in the gaps when its playing even if the centre loses focus briefly. I tried orbiting on the walk and with a little planning it should be grand. Yeah so UHD output to the NINJAv and recording in prores LT is 410Mb/s and that was a 10 or 15minute video so its going to be large. The two 8-15 sec videos I shot today at 4k 100M were directly onto the SD cards so were H.264 and weren't even over 170mb in size and thats all I need to be shooting to be honest. The issue was I like using my Ninjav screen to see what I'm doing and recording in a format that premiere enjoys but this will be ok. Plus it means less weight on the gimbal. Im actually thinking of giving the walking stills version a go also. As will be higher quality but also blur the edges more into a zooming effect whilst hopefully keeping the centre in focus. Orbiting will be a pill but ill try and time it so the shots are being taken when I'm still, moving it gradually in the intervals. When it comes to understanding the difference between VFRates (above 30fps) and Slo-Mo this is where I get lost. To me a higher frame rate than 25/30fps (and I'm on 3 hours sleep here for the past two nights in a row so forgive me) is moving towards slomo. So what I mean is 50fps is where I can now slow it down by a factor of 2 which gives me slow motion. When I shoot 4k50p on the ninja, I can pause the playback on review and there are options to slow the playback down by percentage intervals to watch the footage as I intend it to look and how it will look in my 25p timeline. I've been so confused lately about the Hz settings mostly due to the suffocating amount of differing views by people online that I just need to go back to the start and learn it all again because, in all fairness, a lot has changed in the past 20 years regarding broadcast and acceptable frame rates etc. I've been shooting video since the early 90s and I think a lot of my understanding is redundant now or at least needs a refresher. Most of the people giving tips on youtube were born 20 years later than me and I feel like have a different frame of reference so I feel like I need "an oul boy" to chat to who is up to date with current standards! But thats just how my brain works! I need to unlearn some unhelpful things or at the very least update them. But this is a whole other conversation! sorry.

So let's say you want a 10 second clip so you'll have enough to work with.. You put the GH5 on 2fps. That means you need like 20 frames for 10 seconds correct? How do you calculate that? I mean, you'll have to walk towards/from a subject and you somehow need to know how long you'll have to walk/which distance to clear.
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 жыл бұрын
Rico's Story if you want a time lapse of 10 seconds and your project is 24 frames per second, strictly speaking you’d want to film 240 frames of footage. At 2P that means filming for 120 seconds or 2 minutes. As you say that becomes awkward for a hyperlapse, but it’s just as tricky with a regular hyperlapse, where presumably you’d need to measure the distance you want to travel in those 10 seconds, then divide that distance by 240 and then make sure you only move that amount between taking each photo. It’d probably be quicker to practice how slow you’d need to move to make that trip 2 minutes! As I say in the video though this is best suited for casual use rather than feature film, and the clips at the beginning of this video show you how much footage you get from walking just below regular walking pace.

@@ShotByMyles Great answer, I'll try to maintain a 2 minute distance from the subject that I'm trying to take a hyperlapse of. It'll save a lot of time when we're on a holiday etc. I've got the GH5 in yesterday, so I have yet to practise. Before, I'd use the automatic timelapse function on my Nikon D5600, guess the distance and then just have it set to let's say a 10 second interval. I'd take a picture, take a step forward, reset my aiming point, wait for the shot, take another step etc. Would take me like 15 minutes. My girlfriend hates waiting that long (when we're somewhere together) so this will be a huge time saver haha! Agreed that it might not be the best option for feature films though, but I'm far away from making stuff like that. I do know how to shoot a timelapse and have it look like a hyperlapse in AE though, so that's another option. Thanks again for your answer!

How come you don't have thousands of subs, ill never know.. anyway. What do you think, ditching the gimbal and just use dual stabilization? Would that work, also in 4k I assume?
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 жыл бұрын
Ha thanks! I love dual IBIS but to be honest for the VFR video hyperlapse I don’t think it’d work well- it’s obviously not going to be as stable but I’d have thought without a gimbal even adding warp stabiliser in post wouldn’t save it. Also if you’re walking with it on a slow shutter every shot could be blurry. Without a gimbal I’d stick to the traditional method of taking pics, they’ll be sharper and easier to stabilise in post because of it👍🏻

The Noun one of the shots here is at 1/2 or 360d, it’s the wide tripod shot of the tree where the camera appears to pan up to the train. It works ok if you’re far away from your subjects or if there’s very little movement, but personally I found the motion blur was too much at 1/2 for people or objects whizzing round me, eg on a gimbal. It means virtually nothing is sharp at that point on a gimbal, unless your subject is really far away. On a tripod it makes a bit more sense, but any people passing by will be really long streaks instead of pleasingly blurred out.

@@LucaBanks if you mean Variable Frame Rate is not available it'll be because you're not in one of the shooting profiles that allow it. For example it won't work in any 10 bit mode, you need to pick 4K 8 bit 24P (or 25P if you're in Europe) and then variable frame rate should be visible. Team Dynamiks I think it’d be really difficult to pull focus while moving on a gimbal, especially in VFR mode when the screen is displaying 2 frames a second with a shutter of 1/4. Personally I would use a wide lens and close the iris so that the depth of field is deep enough.

Sorry Jessica I’m not sure! If you can change frame rate to around 2 somehow then you should be golden! In fact I wonder what would happen if you just made your shutter speed ‘4’ (i.e. 1/4 second)... that might just record 4 frames a second for a similar effect. Or you could try 1/2s but that would be blurrier if you’re walking with it!

I'm a bit late to the party, with this episode a month old, along with the fact that I've only had my GH5 for almost a month. I killed my GH4 during Storm Ciara filming waves 🙄. I have noticed one thing while taking Timelapses with my new toy. If I take 500 raw images and get to the camera within moments of the last shot being taken, then the GH5 offers to convert the stills to video, at up to 4k. However I shall dust off my gimbal and have a play today around town. Cheers

RIP your GH4! That’s true, I should’ve maybe mentioned the timelapse photo mode offers an mp4 at the end. That’s probably going to be a similar output to recording video because you’ll lose the flexibility of RAW if you just wanted to use that mp4 in your project. It also takes forever for the camera to create that video if your timelapse was long! So reviewing it and carrying on shooting could be an issue. Good luck with your GH5!
