thanks for this... couple of things though, i recommend when you are uploading tests that are inspecting small quality differences, to youtube, then upload in 4K. then we have much less of a hit on the compression side. and we can go full screen and really see whats what at our end. (even if your just working in 1080) secondly, i don't think grading the shots helps us to identify the actual quality. sure it makes it look pretty, but we really want to see out of camera footage ideally. apart from that i enjoyed your vid. subbed. :) (p.s. i literally just uploaded a gh4 slo mo test comparison, thats why your vid showed in my feed... I decided 62VFR is the best option there. and i explain why.) (p.p.s. my gh5 arrives on tuesday, so i will be delving in deep and doing lots of testing to find the optimal settings for that camera next.)
@MediaDivision

Thanks for the input. In this case I decided to go 1080 as the Variable Frame Rate modes are all FullHD only. Upscaling can introduce it's own problems… all my other stuff is and will be in 4K. Cheers

Media Division fair enough. But the bitrate is so much better in 4K I sometimes upload 4K for all 1080 products. Looks so much better.

How did you set up the smoothness on GH4? 60FPS only? VFR? Or any option in postproduction?
@MediaDivision

I don't exactly know what you mean… I used GH4 up to 96fps (only possible in VFR). The 360 fps GH5 is post (of course). Hope that helps!

no it's not only vfr,gh4 has also 1080p 60p with sound and it's slightly sharper then vfr mode.

@MediaDivision

wow.... thats an ooooold simple one (look at our new ones) but thanks. You just shoot from a tripod layer several scenes over each other where subject does not overlap, mask the top layer taking advantage of the image nature (like edges of houses etc.) to make the cuts less obvious. Retime layer at will (high framerates improves quality of slow motions... if you want to improve the quality of speed ramps, render artificial 180° motion blur with after effects (our tutorial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZ_VdKubdsR_a80)

You're in vimeo as well. Great. Subbed both here and there. Congrats on the gh5. Waiting to see some awesome videos. Btw throwing your cap is not a scene I would advice using twixtor with (it can introduce artifacts). What lens do you use, is it the Panasonic Leica 12-60? How good is the image stabilization? And Any idea about the Autofocus issues some people are rambling about (I'm pretty sure gh5 is not meant to be used as a vlogging camera).
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Manuel. Yes, Twixtor introduces articacts, just like any other optical flow time rewarp. I think it works for this bit well enought. Wouldn' t try that for a paid job... there you have no option then to get a cam that can go that fast. This was shot on the Pana 12-35 mk1. I don't like lenses slower than 2.8 and without constant aperture. I will post a really cool test next week (still working on it) with anamorphic. Auto Focus is not reliable enough... it sometimes works, sometimes not. The IS is very handy... looks great in almoust everything and even gives gimbal like (not quite as good) walks.

I have the lumix gh4 How did you manage to get the camera to do slow motion but with higher quality? Settings I have is at: Rec Format - MP4(lpcm) Rec Quality - FHD | 100M | 60P I wanted to film in slowmotion by editing the videos into slower motion than actually having the video itself edited and slower... (basically my variable frame rate is off) In order to film in this quality... do I need to have the Variable Frame Rate on? Is there something I must change?
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 6 жыл бұрын
Hey… the GH4 maxes out at 4K 30fps but with variable frame rate activated and being in 1080p you can go up to 96 fps max. I use the MOV container but I don't kno if and how it realates to the ability of the cam to shoot high fps. Quality should be the same. If you can set up 96fps but you are not happy with the quality, it is most probably the lack of light. High fps need a ton of light… 4 times what you would need on 24fps and the line skipping gives it on other 50% hit… making it 8 times more light. You can set the shutter to be always open, that helps a bit. So, if you are filming a hallway without a 2K spot will give you bad results due to under exposure. Just use the sun as your natural 20K source. If you are really into slow motion, get the GH5s for 240fps with much higher ISO to compensate for reduced light.
@ZanyJr
@ZanyJr 6 жыл бұрын
I see... thank you! Also another question I can't seem to get the camera to autofocus when I turn on the variable frame rate... (majority the reason why I don't use vfr) I have been trying to film at convention with a steadicam, so I move a lot... usually I would want the camera to be easier to focus than having to adjust the lens... Is there any shortcut on this that you might know of?
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 6 жыл бұрын
As far as I know there is no auto focus during the high frame rates on GH4. Gh5 up to 60 4K. Anyhow… Autofocus on all Panasonic cams is suboptimal… you get just as many unusable shots as without AF, just for different reasons. Take it like a man and go manual. It works on the gimbal, too. Choose a higher stop (f4-f6) for deeper FOV and hold distance to point of interest. in between shots, adjust (you can focus manually while camera is on gimbal…… just not within one shot). It works very well and I do it all the time. You just can't do very specific shot and to be honest… your audience doesn't care if it is a seamless take or a nice cut.

How i can record video on slowmotion (GH4) and next play on normal speed? 8:46
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 7 жыл бұрын
I don't really get your question? You can shoot at any frame rate and then conform the frame rate to your time line frame rate. Or do you mean several different speeds in one frame? The time line framerate remains the same. Take two (or more) clips with fixed camera/light and ramp each like you want (the higher the origianls fps the better the result). Put both clips over each other in NLE. Mask the upper clip in a way, that will not show an obvious mask path (if possible). If nessesary, yo can animate the mask path with changing content of the clips. This is a "quick and dirty" version of how to do it. You will get better results with After effects and some shape trackers like mocha… but that is a science in it self.

ok i got confused for a sec i forgot vfr video is already in slowmo, I was saying when you film video in regular 60fps the video is normal then you get to choose what percentage of speed you want to slow it down.
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 7 жыл бұрын
If you have footage with 60fps, I wouldn't conform it by slowing %. Just conform it with "interpreting media" (or whatever your NLE calls it) by changing the new framerate to play with. No math, no errors.

Take two (or more) clips with fixed camera/light and ramp each like you want (the higher the origianls fps the better the result). Put both clips over each other in NLE. Mask the upper clip in a way, that will not show an obvious mask path (if possible). If nessesary, you can animate the mask path along the changing content of the clips.
