I got a chance to put the LUMIX GH7 next to the Arri Alexa Mini LF to really see how good the ArriLog is.
And quite honestly, I’m impressed with the quality coming out of this camera. Is it a replacement for the Arri? Not in the slightest. But is it a tool to go hand in hand with one? Certainly.

I'm sure if you take more time you can really get super close to the ALEXA look. The GH7 seems more contrasty, has definitely a magenta cast (well known from Panasonic sensor) and is really more saturated. For sure, if you dial back the saturation, shift towards green, decrease the contrast and add a bit of glow to soften the image a bit, you are in the ALEXA ballpark for sure. Great to see a real life situation instead of just someone filming a color chart in their backyard, haha! Finally, this is great that you said that it is a very good (and cheap!) alternative when you need a B or C cam on shoot to pair with an ALEXA if you don't have the budget. I thought Micro Four Third was dead but this video just proved me wrong.

If you don't have close to the budget for even one Alexa, at least you can get close to the look with the GH7. And it will probably be "good enough" in most cases.

So now what I would look for in a camera is less about video quality and more about ease of use. Can you make a good, even cinematic video with a Canon 5D Mark II? Absolutely. But it will be a pain. You have to use manual focus. There's no in-body image stabilization, so forget about handheld shooting. The preamp is awful, so you might have to use an external audio recorder. There's also no headphone jack to monitor audio. The rolling shutter is atrocious, so forget about whip pans and maybe even tracking shots. There are no fast frame rates, so slow motion is out. The dynamic range is quite limited despite the full-frame sensor. There is a short recording limit, which is no good for long events. And, of course, the image is soft, even by 1080p standards. The best thing about newer cameras like the GH7 is that they make it so much easier to get the shot you envision. You can be more spontaneous and flexible about how you film. You can travel with them very easily, and you might not even need a tripod!

@@itisme-fk3zf Magic Lantern can help with the dynamic range issue somewhat, but you have to hack your camera first (not for the faint of heart), and it's still no comparison to more recent cameras. Those old Canon cameras produce a very soft image, even by 1080p standards, and Magic Lantern can't fix that.

The 35mm film stock actually uses a space of about 22mm x 18.7mm (usually 16mm) for an image frame. Without the sound track, the space can be widened to a little less than 25mm. The "Widescreen" format shot on a 35mm film uses less than 22mm width and far less height for an image frame and the "Techniscope" format uses 22mm x 9.5mm space for an image frame. Since the Micro Four Thirds sensor is 17.3mm x 13mm, it is a lot closer to the 35mm film. An APS-C sensor is more or less the same as the 35mm film in terms of image recording space. A celluloid film, however, has a far deeper color depth and a dynamic range that is a lot smoother than a digital sensor. The Panasonic GH7 has a 13+ dynamic range. Maybe it is possible to increase the dynamic range to, say, 14+ or even 15, by enlarging the pixels while reducing the resolution to, oh, 20MP or 18MP? If so, I can start dreaming about a Panasonic GH7S. 😋

I think there's maybe...about a minute of actual GH7 footage, but it's scaled down only side by side with the Arri footage...so you can't actually see it full screen. what is full screen is the guy who needs more black nail polish blabbing...because let's be honest, it's not about the camera he's reviewing. It's all about him. I would give BOTH of my nuts just to watch a straight forward camera comparison full screen of GH7 with other cameras, no added music, no commentary: NOTHING: JUST RAW FOOTAGE, AND 200-300% ZOOM IN TO GET A CLOSE LOOK AT THE ACTUAL PIXELS. The GH7 matches impressively close to the Alexa... it's really an amazing value camera. Footage overall has a bit more of a digital look to it, which is expected, the Alexa sensor will always be more organic and softer than basically all mirrorless sensors. But when cutting the footage together with a proper color grade and watching the final product, no one will ever tell or care about the differences between the two cameras.

I want to say a few things, first I was disappointed when you moved to sony camera, why am I disappointed? Disclaimer, all cameras are good, but sony is very overated, and everyone only knows sony. Look at sony users now, they only know what autofocus is, and what GM lenses are. In my country there are so many sony users, and they are so annoying. I really like watching your content because I see people who are very good and use cameras that are not sony. I'm sick of sony users.

I think it’s a gimmick, but for someone who only has access to GH7 (which is great in its tier and more than enough for most amateur filmmakers), it’s pretty awesome. I just hate the idea of people thinking that approximating color and log profile will somehow magically get you all the other factors making arris image great. It’s uncompressed ARRIRAW, the 14 stops of DR, skin tones, read out speed, and the latitude that make the arri such a perfect camera.

Hey Brady. I’ve been struggling with interiors lately. So my camera doesn’t let me manually dial in what color temperature I want or cant even give it a bump up in warmth or coolness. I can only rely on using a white card. My room for example has tungsten lighting but the windows are daylight. So when I white balance to the tungsten the windows get too blue and my room gets too white when it’s suppose to be a little warm looking. And when I balance to the windows then my windows are white but my rooms tungsten light is way too warm and orange. When I white balance to both of them hitting the same white card I actually get a more accurate reading but I still don’t exactly know why that is and I’m confused on this. I’m basically just winging it. Can you help me understand how to white balance in camera when working with mixed lighting in this case a tungsten source and a daylight source being my windows and getting the correct color from them? Thank you for all your videos

LUMIX seems to be taking their main camera (S5iiX) and taking pieces away and replacing them with a gimmick like downloadable LUTs or ARRI log C3. It bothers me that people are falling for this. Putting Rosso Corsa paint on a chevy doesn't make it a Ferrari. A tiny, overpriced hybrid camera body with horrible dynamic range that uses tiny lenses cannot ever match a $100,000 cinema camera. Anyone pretending it can is crazy or trying to sell you a GH7. Also... what's the use case here? Somebody that owns both an ARRI and a gh7? Who does that? That's absurd. It's a useless feature that everyone is going on and on about.

There are tons of films that use small form factor cameras for shots that larger cameras are too big for. I don’t think anyone really thinks the GH7 fully replaces a dedicated cinema camera for large budget films.
