Ghana was not the first to gain independence in 1957, it was Liberia in 1847.

Liberia was colonized by The American Colonization Society. I do not wish to lecture anyone, but read Liberian history in its entirety. America colonized the natives to settle freed slaves. Colonization does not have to refer to being governed by Europeans. Any outside group can colonize a people.
