The one you sang in school is a Swahili version of it (Before it was amendend in 1994) which was later amendend and adopted as RSAs national anthem in 1994 as a result Afrikaans and English were added. Also other countries such as Tanzania, Zambia and other countries. It was meant to be African Union anthem

It was written by Enoch Sontonga in isiXhosa, as a prayer hymn to bless Africa .

Yeeaah, in South Africa you must be linguistically gifted! The anthem represents as well the unity of SA as the people's diversity. By the way, I live near Cape Town and I speak English, Afrikaans, Italian, German and a bit of isiXhosa and isiZulu
@ananyangkewetse95223 жыл бұрын
Hun you are so gorgeous 😊 what you are singing is the hymn "Nkosi Sikelela" the SA anthem was a mixture of the hymn and die stem van Suid Afrika so the whole Anthem is a prayer that is why most people close their eyes when singing the anthem 😍 again you are beautiful

Fun Fact: The South African National Anthem is actually the African Continental Anthem, it’s also the Tanzanian national anthem, just adapted into different languages
@AustineAK4 жыл бұрын
The anthem was adopted in 1994

The South African anthem is mostly a prayer. Only the Afrikaans and English portions at the end are a pledge... The anthem also refers to Africa as a whole, in such a way that it can be sung for any and all African countries... I'm Zimbabwean though I'm from Beitbridge which is the border into RSA, and I can assure you we also learn the same rhythm in informal settings though for us the words made sense because we speak n understand RSA languages
@WarNeverChanges91913 жыл бұрын
True but back in the days the Die Stem was a mixture between a prayer and a pledge they could have taken the prayer part at least for the current anthem.

I love you! You mentioned they all had their eyes closed. Nkosi Sikilel' Afrika is a prayer which means "God Bless Africa". The first part is sung in Xhosa, second in Zulu, third in Sesotho. This is followed by the Afrikaans Die Stem van Suid Afrika and finally The Call of South Africa. We have 11 official languages. ❤

Your lyrics are not wrong. You sang the Tanzanian adaptation of the song. (Basically the same meaning in Swahili) There was once a call to make the song the official anthem of the African Union. Here are the Lyrics of the contemporary South African Anthem: Nkosi sikelel' I Africa. Mal'uphakanisu phondo lwayo. Yizwa yimi thandazo yethu. Nkosi sikelela. Thina. Luswapho lwayo. Sounds that call to come together, and united we shall stand. Let us live and strive for freedom in South Africa our land.
