ghatam udupa was able to keep pace with the much more experienced sivaraman stroke for stroke...excellent performance by the youngster; i think it would have been more gracious for the senior mridangist to have shown some appreciation for the youngster's performance; sometimes, watching some of sivaraman's performances, one gets the feeling he always wants to show off he is the better player; he may be technically superior but, i personally enjoy listening to the likes of palghat raghu, trichi sankaran and trichur narendran more than listening to sivaraman...who comes across as all high technique but seems of late somewhat lacking in the ability to extract sweetness from the instrument;

+Vijay Kumar Till about 35 yrs back ghatam/kanjira/morsingh vidwans would not get their own mike :-( and to sit well behind mrdanga vidwan! A few only, like Balamuraliji, Dasettan, Chittibabu, Veeva S.Balachander, would insist on 2nd laya vidwan with separate mike! Chittibabuji at ever performance would announce "Thanni Avarthanam is on. This is not an interval. Please be seated!" Sirgazhi Sivachidambaram went even further - at one concert he had violin, veena vidwans & FOUR laya vidwans!

UKS is not well known for his graciousness, always wants limelight. Good that Udupa didn't hold it back. Ghatam artists are not even miced well 80% of the time. That is the confidence that comes with competence.
