I'm a British citizen living in the Netherlands, and have an EHIC. I feel sorry for my fellow Brits who lost theirs.

I have EU envy. 🙂 It's the freedom to work in the EU that's really scuppered things for me. As a third country there are different rules in all EU nations. Pretty easy to work in Poland for a couple of days..... not so much in France. Spent 5 weeks working in Amsterdam in 2008 and it was so easy to do. Pack up your tools and a good supply of underwear, buy a plane ticket, head off. Not the case anymore.

Thank you for pointing this out. I used to carry an EHIC card but I didn't realise it had been replaced by anything. I've applied and I'd encourage anyone else to do so as well. It only took five minutes and my new card is apparently being posted to me within the next two weeks.

I’m glad I stumbled upon this video as I didn’t know (either) that the EHIC was replaced here. FYI apart from the GHIC one can also apply for the “New UK EHIC” which does also cover FL, CH, NO.

I did see that but I wasn't eligible for one. I think you might need to be an EU Citizen with settled status to qualify for that but not 100% sure. Thanks for taking the time to comment, it's great to know it wasn't just me who didn't know about this.

Need to refresh my memory on this but, IIRC correctly, you do NOT need a EHIC/GHIC in Switz. or Norway because on production of a British passport confirming 'right of abode;' type British citizenship you're automatically eligible for basic healthcare there - just like a EHIC/GHIC. I know this becauseI have a close relative living in Switzerland and I checked out the GHIC position last year with a view to visiting her.

Thanks for commenting on this. You are absolutely right a British passport will work in Norway. However, a further development is that apparently the GHIC is now accepted for basic healthcare in Switzerland but not yet Lichtenstein. I wonder how many UK citizens visit Lichtenstein and need basic medical care? I suspect a negligible number.... :-)

I didn't know about this, I've applied for one now! I'd also like to point out an important distinction, it's available for most UK residents on NHS, not only UK citizens. i.e.Canadian here on a work visa.

Sir Jacob Rees Smog probably didn't want to admit to keeping anything 'European'hence calling it Global although it can only be used in Europe.Trans Pennine Express is also a bit of a bogus name too as many of their routes don't cross the Pennines.I think that Northern probably have more actual trans Pennine routes than TPE and at the southern end of the range East Midlands have at least one as well.

The EHIC didn't cover anything before we left the EU, roll on me paying several thousand Euros for care in Amsterdam.. Always take out travel insurance.

EHIC means you get treated the same as locals. If they have to pay for certain treatments then so do you. It varies by country.

The EHIC covered basic urgent care. It also only covered medical care in state hospitals/state system in the European country concerned. If you chose to have non-urgent (elective) treatment in the Netherlands or were treated in one of Amsterdam's private hospitals, then you would have had a big bill not covered by the EHIC scheme. Your advice would better be 'read the small print'.

We have been carrying GHIC cards for the last 2 years (since Brexshit) - don't forget ETIAS is expected to be coming in to force in November (another €7 and interminable delays whilst we are fingerprinted). I liked your comments about TPE - they are the worst rail operator in Europe (not surprising since they are part of First Group like Avanti who are equally abysmal). As an example, we are doing a 2500 mile interrail trip next month and all trains were booked in February with the exception of the trip from Wigan to Newcastle (TPE cannot guarantee a service on 18/06/23 and the earliest I MIGHT be able make a reservation was 15/06/23). The outward trip was booked a month ago courtesy of Northern Rail, Cross Country and LNER using the same routes as TPE. Avanti were little better, I managed to book a Carlisle to Wigan trip home last month.

We are in York at the moment having travelled here via TPE. Trains were on time and really comfy too. I hope that the recent changes will result in a more reliable service though as I have friends who use TPE for commuting and they have a terrible time of it.

Lol! Thanks for the vid. I've just applied for one of these ultra-embarrassing cards. What a fucking God-awful design! As with all things post-Brexit, it's a bit more **** than before, however I suppose it's good that there is something still in place for people like me that like to make lots of European trips. They are just rebadging it in line with the current agenda. I am sure anyone happy to travel to the rest of Europe does not need to be placated and patronised. Still, that's the UK Government for you - always way off the mark. I bet they paid their mates millions to come up with that design masterpiece!
