We all know Ghostbusters is one of the greatest films ever made, but Curtis and I sadly never saw the second; so we thought it was about time we finally went for it!

The fact that Dana's first instinct after she and Oscar were attacked was to run to Venkman, and not any of the other guys, shows the level of trust she had in him. And he stepped up, too. Venkman did everything he could to make her and the baby feel safe and comfortable, and he kept his flirting to a minimum. And even the mild flirting felt calculated to reassure her. I love these two.

Due to the popularity of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, the studios wanted Ghostbusters 2 to be more family friendly (less swearing, no smoking etc). Despite being "family friendly", this movie is kind of darker and scarier than the first movie especially with scenes like the severed heads in the abandoned subway tunnel which looks like something straight out of a horror movie. Plus, Vigo scared the hell out of me as a kid.

@UltimateGamerCC
@UltimateGamerCC 18 күн бұрын
yeah, i dont get the hate either. i guess it's because Vigo wasnt really a problem. meanwhile Gozer was zapped and became Mr. Stay Puft, which resulted in the Ghostbusters taking a shot in the dark to win.

The whole problem is that it takes so long to get going. To be honest, there really wasn't a need for the restraining-order subplot--it could have been explained much more easily as "things slowed down enough within five years to the point where everyone went their separate ways out of boredom. Ray, Winston, and sometimes Egon handle the one or two investigations they get, and they do parties as a side hustle. Dana reunites them, and the Scoleri Brothers pop up during another trial, giving the guys a taste of the old days...and then business booms yet again."

The pneumatic transit tunnel where the river of slime is seen was based on an actual thing called the Beach Pneumatic Transit. It was a demonstration of what could have been a pneumatic subway system for Manhattan. It opened in 1870, only had one stop, and went for about 300 feet down a tunnel to a dead end. It was run as an attractions and people actually rode on it, but the project to make it into a full subway system never got approved and it was shut down in 1873. The tunnel was sealed up, but later on workers digging for one of the regular subway lines found it, and it no longer exists today.

In the 1990 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the abandoned subway tunnel they live in is in reference to the pneumatic transit. In the 2012 series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 2 Episode 13, the pneumatic subway system was used as a lair by the Kraang.

I was 5 and a half when my older cousin took me to the movies to see this. As a little kid, even though I loved the original and the cartoons, the creepy scenes were actually scary. When Viggo reveals himself to Yanosh for the first time, I got so scared during his monolog, I ran out the theater. My cousin followed me and didn't even get mad at me for wimping out, even though he really wanted to see Ghostbusters II. Instead, we went into the next theater room down the hallway and watched Honey, I Shrunk The Kids for the first time. Ended up being a good day either way.

After the first movie came out the "Real Ghostbusters" cartoon was extremely popular. The cartoon featured the adventures of the Ghostbusters continuing after the movie. They stayed together and they fought new ghosts and monsters. So when the second movie came out they... completely ignored the events of the cartoons! But the cartoons continued and they slightly rewrote them to try to work the events of the second movie into their history!
@fredcasdensworld
@fredcasdensworld 18 күн бұрын
You're wrong, because the Real Ghostbusters cartoon has three episodes that basically indicate that the films and the series are two different continuities, and those episodes are Take Two, Citzen Ghost and Partners In Slime. Hell even if the sequel series Extreme Ghostbusters expands on this with the Back in the Saddle two-parter

Completely agree - the film was okay up to the Statue of Liberty part and then it jumped the shark just to have a Stay Puft moment.

I used to have the Ghostbusters II mug with “Suck in the guts guys were the Ghostbusters” on the side. It was the only movie I saw at the cinema in 1989, the only other one I wanted to see was the Bond film Licence To Kill but it was the first Bond film ever to be rated 15 rather than PG and as I was 9, I was too young to see it. It would end up being my favourite of the franchise when I did see it when released on VHS. Sad trivia: baby Oscar was played by twins Will & Hank Deutschendorf, sadly Hank would take his own life in 2017 aged just 29.

I really enjoyed this one when I watched it in cinema in 1989. Maybe not a big a classic like the first. But lots of memorable scenes. Some pretty scary stuff for a comedy. And a great soundtrack. I still got a soft spot for this one. And I really enjoy this line from it: "Mayor, it's a great pleasure to see you again, and you'll be happy to know that almost fifty percent of us voted for you in the last election."

Funny story.. apparently Ernie Hudson who played Winston had auditioned for the same part in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon and was told he didn't sound enough like the Winston from the movie so they gave the part to Arsenio Hall. Kinda like how Dolly Parton lost a lookalike contest to a drag queen.
@GrisbaneAddams
@GrisbaneAddams 18 күн бұрын
You're almost correct. It wasn't that he didn't sound enough like the movie Winston; it's that they didn't want to pay likeness rights for either the art or voices on the cartoon, so the first instruction given to *everyone* auditioning was "do NOT do an impression of the movie actors." That was why they hired Arsenio Hall instead of Hudson.

The Ghostbusters should ignored things at first so that way New York can beg them especially after they hated them.

48:20 Rick Moranis took a break from acting to take care of his kids after his wife passed away. There was talk about him making a comeback to acting, but after he was attacked in New York in 2020, he didn't fully confirm that he would return to acting just yet.

The Ghostbusters theme song was a Huey Lewis and the News ripoff, and lost in court due to it proven as such. They asked The News to do the soundtrack of the original, and they refused, but since someone in charge wanted their sound so bad, they just slowed the song down and put different lyrics to it. 😂😂😂

Kitten - the prosecution attorney- this was her last role before cancer took her. She was way too young. Her widower husband is Ted Wass AKA Blossom’s Dad, Billy Crystals brother on Soap & prolific TV director. He channelled his wife’s passing into being Blossom’s dad because her mom ditches the family, and him for stardom.

Personally I really liked the Statue of liberty. It IS a cool icon of America, hope, all that good stuff, and it's just fun to get her marching around haha. Yes, like a lot of the movie's plot structure it's a clear lift-and-twist from the first one, "let's take the giant magically animated thing and do it again, but this time for the good guys", but I dunno I don't really mind. And the mechanism of slime that can be good or bad based on its "psychoemotional charge" is a pretty cool sci-fi concept :) I agree the final Vigo fight could've been more involved, but he was still pretty freaky (great music/ambience in there) and probably more interesting overall than the Gozer encounter.

Fun Fact: they released a graphic novel adaptation (i wanna say 4 issues?) of this movie, and they used the art style of the characters from the Real Ghostbusters cartoon! (eg. Peter looked lanky, Ray had red hair, Egon was blond). For the most part, other than the character art, it was a faithful adaptation. FYI, the scene with the creepy guy kidnapping the baby was ten times scarier than in the movie. I actually had nightmares of that image.
