I feel you bro.. for me it happened like this. I knew and i was a fan of the cartoon real Ghostbusters when i was around 10 because i was watching it during the weekend cartoons among Transformers, Gi Joe etc WITHOUT knowing there was a movie Ghostbusters!!! And around Christmass 1991, i suddenly saw the tv trailer of the movie Ghostbusters that was about to be aired in tv and i went like..wtf ?? They made a movie out of the cartoon?? Shit i have to see it !!! And then i saw the movie (i recorded it on VHS also) and i had the same epic blast as you!! Somewhere down the road i realised that the movie preceeded the cartoon!! Innocent ages without internet

Also, while this is just a movie, I like to think in real life there is no such thing as a crybaby and Fred Rogers says on his show "Mister Rogers Neighborhood" that you are never too old to cry out of sadness and crying is not just for babies just because it's a babies communication and if someone calls someone else a crybaby, they're bullying them.

Fun fact; Due to Stay Puft going out of business after the filming of this movie, the Marshmallow Man had lost his job being company mascot having to seek new employment. Shortly after, he was putting in a few applications and using this movie for being a big credibility on his resume. He finally found a job being a mascot for a tire company and ended up being the Michelin Man.

The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man suits cost approximately $20,000 each. Three were made, and all were destroyed during filming. The rooftop set for the final confrontation between Gozer and the Ghostbusters occupied an entire soundstage and required 50,000 amps of electricity to be properly lit. Columbia Pictures had to shut down other stages while this scene was being filmed. Gozer was also a name related to a documented haunting in England. The name Gozer appeared mysteriously throughout the Enfield Poltergeist house, written on walls and other things. The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man was originally supposed to come up out of the water right next to the Statue of Liberty, but the scene was too hard to shoot. Dan Aykroyd described Mr. Stay Puft as a cross between the Michelin Man and the Pillsbury Doughboy. He wanted to create a fictional brand mascot that everyone would have grown up with. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man scene is in the final film exactly as it was written in Dan Aykroyd's original treatment. Ivan Reitman was frightened at the step audiences had to take in how believable the creature was. This was his biggest concern at that first screening at Columbia Studios. At that time, they only had one shot of the Marshmallow Man, the one between the building of the monster's head. It was enough to make the audience go crazy with laughter. While filming the final scene, the ending wasn't completely worked out. Reitman recollects the "crossing the streams" idea had come up elsewhere in the screenplay before this but using that to kill the Marshmallow Man came through working out the scene on set. "So, let's talk about this marshmallow," says Reitman before explaining it was shaving cream. Huge laundry bags full of it were dropped on the people on set. Before the big drop on William Atherton, the actor asked Reitman if it was going to hurt. Reitman simply said he didn't know. Menthol shaving cream was used resulting in at least one case of someone having an allergic reaction to it. Reitman states that people had more of a problem with the limited amount of marshmallows on Bill Murray than they had with the fact that the Ghostbusters survived or the Marshmallow Man in the first place. Of course, the idea of Venkman being covered much less than the other Ghostbusters was Murray's idea. On the opposite end, Dan Aykroyd loved the shaving cream and kept asking for more to be applied to him. The phrase "This chick is toast" was first coined by Bill Murray in this movie. Another popular Murray line, which would also appear in other films, was "Nice shootin', Tex!" The producers were prepared to produce a different ending if test audiences didn't react positively to the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. When the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man attacks, a stunned Ray recalls roasting Stay-Puft marshmallows "by the fire at Camp Wokanda". "Wokanda" (or "Waucanda") is an old Native American name that translates to "Spirit Water." Camp Wokanda was a real-life Boy Scout camp near Peoria, IL, recently acquired by the Peoria Park District. Another real-life Camp Wakonda exists near Sault St. Marie Ontario, on Lake McCarrell. Dan Aykroyd grew up in Ottawa. Paddi Edwards dubbed over Gozer's lines because Slavitza Jovan's accent came across as comedic. A 2002 addition to the Oxford English Dictionary credits Bill Murray's ad-lib, "This chick is toast!" as the origin of "toast" in the sense of "A person or thing that is defunct, dead, finished, in serious trouble, etc." In the dubbed French version, Venkman mentions Joseph Stalin as the potential embodiment of evil, not J. Edgar Hoover. In the Italian version, it's Adolf Hitler, although he's called "Adolfo Hitler." In the Spanish dub, it's Mao Zedong. Slavitza Jovan who plays Gozer was always harnessed during the climactic scenes enabling her to flip around on set at will. Sigourney Weaver suggested that she dress up as Zuul the Terror Dog, but the idea was rejected. Punk rocker Anne Carlisle was originally offered the role of Gozer but turned it down. The red contacts that Slavitza Jovan had to wear were extremely uncomfortable.

Parts of the suits survived and went up for auction. Also the giant Staypuft hat that falls on the crowd was also auctioned off. The first suit performer nearly suffocated to death after he had an allergic reaction to the asbestos in the suit. The prop team had lined the suit FULL of it for the fire scene. He survived but IIRC had to be taken to the hospital.

Take note of the fact that Gozer dodged the beams at first. It was drawing their attention away from the gate. Gozer recognized that they could send it back by blasting the gate. It’s easy to see that the beams couldn’t hurt Gozer, even in the form of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, it was barely affecting it.

Heres how: When they crossed the streams, they immediately run away, hiding behind stones and hiding in the original spot where they planned to cross the streams. So the flames could not reach them and burn them but they were defintely burning up and getting hot and thats when they got covered in marshmallow which i guess cooled them down a little bit
