Great reaction review. As for the Satanic angle, bandleader Tobias Forge has said that no one in the band is Satanic, but the band is. They have many songs about the devil, but it's done for show, and is about as scary as Scooby Doo. What they do best is write amazing songs, catchy and fun. Their albums are very consistent, rarely a weak track. They also put on excellent live shows.

I think you pretty much nailed Ghost's whole image with this reaction. It's quite simple, but very effective and catchy. They often get critised for not being "metal" enough and well there is some truth to that, but it's catchy as hell. They are more and more called the metal version of Abba. And yes they do have a whole devil-themed image, which is their whole gimmick, which is another critique they have gotten, but it's pretty cool, and they have an amazing stage show and costume design! And well I say they, but in reality there is only 1 band member, who is the singer. He writes all the songs alone (almost all the songs), and pays musicians to go on stage with him and play some parts in studio :) Can't wait for you to check out more!

Exactly! They’re a theatrical band and as I understood the whole devil worshipping thing is a huge jokey gimmick and should be taken ironically as entertainment factor and maybe even as a bit of a societal critique with a wink 🤭 I feel like the band doesn’t take themselves too seriously and I love that about them :D

My absolute favorite band! I saw them 11 years ago in my home town in Sweden when only a few songs had become popular. I was standing all the way in the front because the crowd was so small. I was hooked instantly! Regarding his vocals- he actually never intended to be the singer himself. He wanted to play the guitar like he had done in previous bands, but he simply didn’t find a vocalist that he felt would fit his vision for the band.

The Lead Singer has definitely improved in vocal skills since this song came out, last time I saw then live everything sounded full and amazing. I think the reason he sang it that was at first was because when performing it live back then the masks would block some of his voice so he might have sang in that was so the live version would not be to different from the album version. But nowadays it seems he has the mask perfected to the point where it no longer limits his vocals.

My favorite Ghost track is this one or "He Is". They are delightfully catchy, which goes with their whole story. Very important to say, that Tobias Forge (lead singer) is the Band. He is writing everything and do most of the studio work. For some instruments he gets himself some help. Ghost has always been a Satanic project, and that theme runs through the albums. The scenario you describe with the record company and changing a few words didn't happen. Mainly they got noticed through uploads to MySpace.. and it took off from there.. suddenly the singer/songwriter had to work out how to go on tour so formed a band to do it. However, the band members were in previous bands together and those projects were less overtly Satanic in nature. The singer and main song writer (and only original band member these days, as there was a big bust up over money right before Ghost really took off in popularity sadly) did have a death metal band before Ghost, though The stage show is also Satanic, I won't spoil it though as I'm sure you'll get to further Ghost songs down the line 👻 The idea behind the band was something like: Satan ordered a band formed to make new worshippers by spreading the word of Satan.. and so the band's mission was to become as popular as possible.. hence the music is often very catchy You can think of it as tongue-in-cheek Scooby-doo Satanism, though.. they're not out in the woods sacrificing chickens at night. It's a Swedish band and going to church isn't really popular in Europe like it is still for some reason in the US, we left that behind in the 20th century. But going to a Ghost show (called a ritual) is fun to tickle some of those being in a church for some reason neurons.. with the frankincense burning and so on

Being on the square and level are expressions the freemasons use. As is the Square Hammer and many more in this lyrics. Tobias joined the Swedish Freemasons a couple of years back and took inspiration of things from that. The song was written because Tobias thought Ghost needed a big opener for the shows and it was used for that for a long time. Now he uses it and Dance Macabre to close the show. Square Hammer was named best metal song of the decade by Loudwire Magazine and was a Billboard Mainstream Rock number one single. Try Spillways next i think you're gonna like it ❤️

Tobias Forge, the main composer, sincger and multi instrumentalist of the band, has indeed a pretty nasal voice, however throughout the albums you can see him deliberately changing his voice both because of practice and because he plays different characters. On stage he wears a sillicone mask that, because of the pressure on tje nose, accentuates that nasal aspect a bit.

Enjoyed the review! I just wanted to offer a couple of answers to some things you brought up. Sorry if it winds up a book, but I’ll try to keep it short! 1) Square Hammer was huge for Ghost. It wasn’t even on a main album. It was the opening track on an EP of cover songs, and managed to get #1 on Billboard’s US Mainstream Rock chart. 2) Tobias has had a deviated septum since he was a teenager, so his voice tends to be nasally in general. That being said, he can really open up and has gotten much better over the years as a singer. I’d say both intentional and an effect of layering his vocals. 3) Tobias posted a 3 song demo onto MySpace in 2010 with nothing but a picture of the band’s logo, and got contacted within a couple of days by record labels and managers. Nothing about the songs were changed when the full album was made. The gimmick was in place a couple of years beforehand. He thought music like that did not sound like something that should be coming out of a guy that looked like him, so the masked band thing was born. 4) It’s all theater and entertainment, and they’ve said as much many times. If anything, they’re a parody of the Catholic Church. It’s like wrestling. Keeping kayfabe is half the fun. As to living as a Satanist, Tobias has claimed that Satan (more the pop-culture version rather than Biblical) has been a mentor figure for him since he was a pre-teen, and represents for him freedom, rebellion, rock, etc. He doesn’t call himself or anyone in the band a Satanist, though. The band itself is. Anyway, I’m looking forward to checking out some more of your videos!

The band has an invented lore that they've existed since the 60s trying to convert the world to Satanism through catchy rock songs sung by their evil pope. It's a perfect mix of campy horror and well written songs. Every album or so they change or kill the front man and get a new singer with a new personality. It's just the same singer in a new mask with new makeup. Their music is hard to categorize, but their live show is fantastic. You should try Cirice or Year Zero for some sinister songs...or He Is if you want to hear a Contemporary Christian style song about Lucifer. There's a lot of great music here.

You really need to see and hear them live. This is one band where the studio records, particularly the early, don't do them justice. It has reasons. This was basically a one-man/two-man at the beginning. The band-leader/songwriter/vocalist/frontman recorded the early records almost alone, playing most of the instruments himself. He originally planned to be the guitarist of the band, because he was a guitarist. That went nowhere. The band Ghost finally exploded on the scene (2006 I think) when he decided: "F** this, I'll front and sing this myself!". So the live band today is something a bit different. All roles are more proficient. Including the vocals because he has become a much better singer. A really good one, in fact. And as a frontman, I don't think there is anyone better on the whole Rock stage.

Love ghost so I’m excited you’re checking the band out. With the devil/satanic thing he’s said it’s just for a big theatrical kind of thing and that he’s not a satanist. And there’s a whole lore behind the band behind just being a gimmick. The idea is they’ve been a band since like the 60’s who use popular and pleasant sounding music to subtly (sometimes not so much) get the message of of the devil and whatnot out there. Like subliminal messaging I guess. And while there’s actually only ever been one lead singer there have been several characters he’s played that were the lead singers of the band at various times since the 60’s or whenever the lore of it starts. The whole concept of ghost is really fun and kinda genius for what he was going for imo considering it’s kind of a one man show. He writes all the music, the lore of the band, the look and pretty much everything of what ghost is, is are his ideas

it's a combination of shock and awe and genuine beliefs. Tobias is very much aligned with satanic PHILOSOPHY, but not religion. Ghost's specific take on it literally just takes a very satirical view of Christianity and just changes the names and makes it about Satan instead of God. "Cirice", for example, is about the church manipulating people by presenting themselves as the only ones who can ever understand or love them. "He Is" is essentially a hymn about Lucifer, but it's so heavily masked that it sounds like it could be a Christian song if you don't pay VERY close attention to the words. (and the music video is a parody of Jim Jones) Ghost has been full force with their image from day one. It's Tobias' passion project, the culmination of everything he loves about rock music, opera, movies, etc. (And he was previously in a death metal band called Repugnant!)
@jkatt1002 жыл бұрын
Hi, I’m a Christian and would like to throw some two cents in the bucket if I may. There’s a debate on wether someone should enjoy music based on subject matter (I.e enjoy skillet because of the Christian undertone or ghost because of the satanist undertone). I did see another comment mention that their style is very satanist in approach with a lot of reference to Catholicism. I saw an interview from the lead singer that he does enjoy the styles of cathedrals and that’s where the pope characters he portrays and the stage prescience he puts on come from. But a lot of their songs are just straight “hail satan.” Some reference other folk lore and dark lore at times (like call me little sunshine). Songs are simple and super catchy. I’ve seen a lot of Christians come out saying they love the music regardless of seriousness or not of the subject purely because the sound is so good. I would also agree. I listen to almost all types of music and if I don’t agree with the subject matter, I’ll jam out appreciating the art that was crafted. I hope no mater what music you listen to? You enjoy it and it makes your day better or enhances whatever venture you find yourself on. Rock on everyone!

Great blind reaction. I think you nailed it quite good! As many other said in the comments, rarely a bad song. But I recommend you to listen to their first album from 2010 Opus eponymous which is not as polished but man, what a sound! Satan has always being present in their songs but as you predicted, they're not really satanic but very disturbed with religion in general and the Catholic church especially. What to do? Perform as a anti-pope, a satanic one to give the message. The band, like me, are from Sweden, a very secular country and religion and how the religion affects a lot of people we find disturbing. So with that said, their satanic performance really have a purpose and a truly meaning. Thanks for this reaction! Like and follow from me!
