Four passengers in a stagecoach head west through Indian territory: Barbara, a young woman to meet her fiancé; A minister who believed that settlers should befriend the Indians, Rev. Wheedle; Doc is a drunken doctor; and Conroy, a well-dressed “gentleman” with a sly and sarcastic tone.
At a stage stop destroyed by the Indians, her fiancee Duff and friend Crusty join them; They have been searching for gold for the last two years. They continue, then meet the Sergeant. Dockery, a soldier from a nearby fort, and his son, Alex. The soldier tells the group that Cheyanne is on their way to war and they must change course. The group was then attacked by a group of Cheyannes and two stagecoach drivers were killed. The doctor is also killed. The rest of the group manages to get to a ghost town (apparently destroyed by some kind of disease) where they wait for the night. There, Stone Knife, a disgraced Cheyanne chief, and his young half-white female friend, Maureen, join them.
