Hi Rachel. Thanks for this bit of interesting local history. Some of my growing up years were in Ocheesee area specifically. Tell your mom I said hello.

Thomas Cupples Richards, my direct ancestor, was one of those settlers who moved to Ocheesee Bluff in 1821. His brother Stephen had been a translator between John Blunt and Andrew Jackson. I had always thought that the Gregory House (which is largely a reconstruction at this point) was from downstream, not upstream.

The house was where the landing is now. A little right looking down at the boat ramp. The house was anchored and tied to that oak tree with about a ten foot lead. So I've heard

In Blunt's case, this is true. His case was tried in a state court. Another Apalachicola chief, Econchattimico, was more successful when he sued future Florida governor John Milton over Black Seminoles taken from his village at about the same time. Econchattimico prevailed in Federal court, but the kidnapped people were never returned.

I thank you for your outstanding history of Florida. Query: the 1900 census of Florida lists a commune near Joppa Lodge in Lafayette County. I know that in 1921 the county of Dixie was formed from the southern end of Lafayette. With that the Joppa Lodge #4 was now in Dixie County near Old Town. Myself and another person are trying to find any information regarding our families in that area. If there is any info. that can shed light on this we gratefully appreciate it.

The store you are thinking of is no longer in operation. There is a syrup-making operation or two in Two Egg still.

Hi and thanks for the note! Actually, a ghost town is simply an abandoned place where a town once existed, so a place can be a ghost town even if no structures survived. Our mind often goes to the abandoned mining towns out West when we think of ghost towns, but there are other types. I hope you enjoyed the story!
