Handhelds at the time were quite primitive so something like this is surprisingly impressive, especially in terms of animation. The OG wonderswan had only 64kb of RAM and powered only by a single AA battery!

Fun Fact: There is an unofficial remake of this game called Ghosts'n Demons by BonusJZ. Not only it looks and plays better l while also expanding the original WonderSwan version with new content based of the original Ghosts'n Goblins from the arcade, it's also ten times times more difficult to play.

It's interesting how a lot of these sprites have the vibe of something far more elaborate that's been heavily downscaled, the Ghost Tower and Nightmare especially, so I wonder if there was at one point a more ambitious Ghosts N Goblins game in development for the PS1 or somesuch that got canned and they recycled the remnants into this...

This wonderswan version of Ghost and Goblins looks great. A mixture of Universal studios monsters and Tiamat 2nd form reminds me of King Ghidorah minus the wings. Plus I like the bosses except for the Frankenstein Zombie and the living castle.

Ghouls and Ghblins is notorius for difficulty so this is impressive.

Nice to see a game bearing the Makaimura name that actually gives us entirely new levels, mechanics, and bosses, as opposed to just trotting out the handful from the original like the franchise tends to be guilty of (even if, in Makaimura tradition, most of them are pretty pathetic compared to the levels leading up to them); pity about that Wonderswan sound quality though, ow my ears.
