This was literally the best story-telling of this case that I’ve ever heard. The sheer amount of detail and plot twists blew my mind. Literally when I thought the story was over, and you said “But, this was not the end of the story for flight 401” and the moments I’ve heard after that sent chills down my spine. Bravo MrBallen, bravo!

I am a retired airline pilot and we studied this accident at length. It resulted in training changes that ensured whenever there was a mechanical problem on board that the flying pilot would stay focused on only flying the aircraft and not get involved in troubleshooting the problem. You told this very well and got it exactly right.

My Dad was an aerospace engineer and his best friend at Lockheed was one of the engineers that worked on that planes design. Our family's were in New York and getting ready to go to Miami Florida. We were supposed to be on that flight. Earlier that day my brother was in a car accident and we had to change our plans. As kids we were very unhappy about missing the vacation. When we heard the news we were stunned to say the least and afraid to fly. I was only 9. The thought that I could have died haunted me all my life. Since then I have had 4 additional last minute changes that "saved/spared" my life. I'm so grateful for life's pivots that have spared my life.

I actually find it really cool that the ghost of the engineer warned the pilot of malfunctions which ended up being real. He wanted to help and potentially saved lives by doing that
@DennisTea
@DennisTea Жыл бұрын
There was never any evidence that any crash parts were salvaged, and no one reported any ghost sightings until a reporter took a joke from a flight engineer too seriously. The flight engineer jokingly said he thought he saw the ghost of the dead flight engineer when checking the engines, and ghost on a plane made it to newspapers. The reason ghost sightings stopped getting reported is because people just forgot about the crash after a while, they were no longer paranoid. In the reports the ghost didn't tell anyone of a malfunction. The flight engineer heard a knocking sound in the hell hole, opened the door to check it, thought he saw a ghost in the darkness, checked it out and found a problem that could have caused a crash. People act like it's crazy for a malfunctioning engine part to make a knocking sound.
@tylerdavis9826
@tylerdavis9826 Жыл бұрын
@@DennisTea you’re speaking of 2 separate instances though. The warning wasn’t the knocking in the hell hole, that was a whole different encounter, the warning was before a take off. Not saying I disagree with you, but if you’re going to make an argument you should probably at least fully comprehend what you’re trying to argue against and for. It all went over your head other than 2 key parts of a very large story.

No, ghost do not exist. This alleged flight engeener was a demon that has taken a form of a dead person in oder to deceive and torment living people. The reason why he told about the engine problem was to maintain this believe in ghost so that we may trust them and it would be dead easy to deceive us into making vad decisions.

My Aunt was on that flight. I was waiting at Miami International Airport for her that night. Fortunately, she was on the last helicopter load of survivors. We actually met the pilot and co-pilot that morning because they were doing a turn around flight from here to LaGuardia Airport and we were bringing my handicapped Great Aunt to that flight. Both were so kind. My Aunt spent 9 months in the hospital and got the second highest settlement from Eastern Airlines. She went on to live another 4 decades. I will never forget that night that changed our lives forever.

this is so wild! my mom actually had something similar happen on a flight from germany to italy in the 90s- the landing gear did not show it had locked in place. they did a tower fly-by for the tower crew to visually confirm the gear was out and were then redirected to venice airport (cause there they could slide into the laguna if the landing gear broke off), ordered to circle a while to burn off as much fuel as possible to reduce fire risk in case of a crash and then went to landing. my mom was scared of flying even before than - she said it was one of the most viscerally terrifying moments of her life and all she could think about was „who‘s going to tell my daughter?“ 😮

I'd say the scariest part of this story is the pilot who bent down and looked Captain Loft in the face. If you think about that, he knew Bob in life, talked to him and probably more, and now looked at that dead face looking back at him. That part was freaky to me.

I have a personal connection to this disaster. I was very good friends with the daughter of a survivor of this crash, Richard Micale (he is listed on the website). Richard, frequently spoke of his experiences about the crash & his recovery. He said that while he was floating in the Everglades, he distinctly recalled seeing an apparition walking among the debris. He also said that he wasn’t certain if seeing this apparition was due to inhaled fuel fumes or it was really a ghost. Also, due to your military medic history, you may find it interesting that it was this disaster that CRM - Crew Resource Management & how we run codes, is based upon! I’m in the medical field & have worked closely with members of the aviation community that also teach ACLS/BLS. I am so thankful that Richard Micale, survived this crash. He actually saved my life & is the only reason I am here to comment on your video today! Richard, passed away many years ago. I am so happy that you covered this information. The man Robert, in your story, also pulled Richard Micale, out of the Everglades that night. Thank you again for covering this story.

My uncle used to work for Eastern Airlines in the late 80s. He was a very accomplished pilot, was in the marine Airforce and had a lot of flight time. He's a perfectionist and would always inspect the plane that he was going to fly and would write up a report if he found any issues. Eastern threatened him several times about the write ups until they finally fired him and blacklisted him from the industry in which he couldn't get a job for over a decade. He would later get work doing private flights until he was approached by and currently works for the FAA as an aircraft safety inspector/investigator out of JFK. There were a lot of issues with that airline and it's no wonder they went out of business.

And I don’t think you’re a pilot but you literally explained things in layman‘s terms for anyone who is not a pilot perfectly. Well done. Additionally, I remember learning about this flight in our Airline Pilot training. There were some rules and regulations made due to this crash. This is one of my favorite Ballen stories. It is so creepy, and I find it really fascinating that these ghosts were seen by so many people. I feel like this is pretty solid proof of ghosts. Why would so many people lie? I don't think all these people who work for the airline are putting their reputation at stake for a lie.

while im inclined to agree, i just want to say that (i've only gotten to the 'not alone' part) that the first story honestly makes a lot of sense. that bottom floor is cramped and already really spooky. and both the flight attendants were directed to go down there when asking where the other was... so naturally they were expecting to find someone down there. i think that was the reason they both had that "strong sense of not being alone." it's the fact that they were quite literally supposed to find someone down there, but didn't. idk, it just doesn't seem paranormal to me; just a kind of psychological thing since they were expecting to find someone but didn't. edit: i must admit, the second story is just absolutely intriguing, i don't think anything can explain it edit 2: from an article Among the general public, Eastern Air Lines flight 401 is best known not for its safety lessons, but for an alleged haunting which became one of the most widely shared urban legends to emerge from the aviation industry. According to the story, popularized by the 1976 pseudo-nonfiction novel Ghosts of Flight 401, Eastern Air Lines salvaged intact galley equipment from the wrecked airliner and installed it on another L-1011, after which passengers and crew began seeing lifelike apparitions of Bob Loft and Don Repo in the galley area. The story became so popular that Eastern Air Lines had to tell its employees to stop writing up ghost sightings in the flight logs. However, the actual origin of the sightings is much more prosaic. In fact, the story seems to have originated in a 1973 Flight Safety Foundation article about an engine failure on another Eastern Air Lines plane, which jokingly described the pilot “[thinking] he saw the ghost of Don Repo.” Someone took this attempt at humor too seriously, and the story spread from there, often being taken as canon, even though no one saw a ghost until after the story was published, nor was there any evidence that equipment from flight 401 was actually salvaged. TLDR: the logs were originated from an urban legend in a novel and it's believed that employees started to log these sightings as jokes as a reference to the novel; also the fact that there is no evidence that equipment from flight 401 was ever salvaged... kinda disappointed mrballen didn't mention this, but rather stated it as fact that material was salvaged
@brettjohnson5102
@brettjohnson5102 4 ай бұрын
@fruitygranulizer540 You say "from a novel" in the tldr. To me, that makes it sound like it was taken from a work of fiction. I mean, at least it was from a non-fiction novel. Trust me, I know that doesn't really prove any of this really happened, but I'd like to think there's something to this. While I am interested in your findings, I kind of wish I wouldn't have read your reply. Only because it's fun to think it could have really happened the way Mr Ballen explained it. It's strange because when I think about the possibility of the paranormal, I am torn. On one hand, the idea of an afterlife in general seems preposterous. It doesn't really make sense to me. But I think it's a little, for lack of a better word, presumptuous to think that way. Mankind has, and will always, think they have everything all figured out. You can look back through history and see how many times we were completely wrong when we were so damn sure we were right. The Earth is flat. Everything, including the sun, orbits us. Galileo (following Copernicus' heliocentric theory) debunked that and was sentenced to life in prison (house arrest) for heresy. Scientists called galaxies nebulae before Edwin Hubbel used the standard candle of a type one-a supernovae to confirm that Andromeda is its own galexy. The list goes on, but my point is that just because we don't understand something and lack the technology and know how to prove it, that doesn't mean we should reject it as an impossibility. Sorry for the "novel." Brevity has never been my strongsuit. I just feel like a lot of us, myself included, are too close-minded for our own good. Speaking of novels, I kinda want to read that one you were talking about. The one that supposedly started this whole gem of a story.

Both of my parents worked for Eastern for over twenty years, and were with the company when this unfortunate event occurred. Their home base (at that time) was MIA, the Miami International Airport. My mother, who was a flight attendant then, never did have an encounter but she told me one of her friends and fellow flight attendants saw flight engineer Repo on one of her flights after the crash. My father, who was a mechanic for Eastern, had no supernatural encounters though he no doubt worked on the planes with parts cannibalized from 401, as he specialized on the L1011. I have personally worked on an L1011 in a museum setting and it's a magnificent bird. It's a shame this tragedy ever occurred. I have a theory that the ghosts of those who failed to prevent the accident served as guardians for the fleet in the afterlife, as it is the responsibility of the crew to assure the safety of all souls onboard their aircraft. It seems to me as though they took this duty very seriously.

I remember learning about this when I was a kid in the 90's, bc in 1978 they made a movie about it called "The Ghost of Flight 401." It came on the TV one evening and my dad was explaining everything as we watched it. A heartbreaking part I remember from the film is the Captain was alive but badly hurt, and as he was being carried he just cried asking "How many dead?! How many dead?! I'm so sorry.!" Then he died not long after.

After he left to let me rest, an aide came in to ask if I needed anything, and asked who I was talking to. I told him what happened. That doctor was never there. I was not under any medication.
