Ghost Town Living

3 жыл бұрын

In this video, I take you through a typical day in my life up here at Cerro Gordo. Living here since early 2020, I've developed a pretty regular irregular routine!
You can follow my journey on Instagram: / brentwunderwood
THANK YOU!!
==
I moved to Cerro Gordo in March 2020 because of the pandemic and to relieve our longtime caretaker so he could be back home. I've been here ever since. There have been ups and downs, but I feel I am learning a lot and becoming a better person.
Follow along on this channel for more from the town. I have no plans to leave and will continue making videos to update the progress on all the projects!
The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of bullion out of the mountain for Los Angeles.
The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.
The Los Angeles News once wrote:
“What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”
In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.
It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it.
Subscribe by email to get one email per month on most recent renovations, artifact finds, cave explorations, ghosts?, and more...
mailchi.mp/d8ce3179cf0c/cerro...
The type of things that might lead you here are interests in ghost towns, abandoned mining towns, abandoned cities, California history, the zombie apocalypse, ghost stories, scary stories, nature, death valley, lone pine CA, mines, exploring, overnight challenges, exploration, urban exploration and yes theory.

22:20 ; It is a practice cartridge for a 40mm 'High-low propulsion system' aka a 40 MM grenade launcher. Its solid inert aluminum, so people can practice without blowing themselves up. Plus a solid slug is cheaper and easier to produce without all the explosives, primer, and other fun stuff they'd have to put in there. That's a neat (modern) find!

Get yourself 3 things for your kitchen: 1. Crockpot slow cooker, 2. Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer 3. Grill... doesn't have to be anything fancy, you can even build a wood fire in a charcoal grill. These will make meals way better, especially when you run low on propane. If you can afford it, there's an invention called Zero Mass Water... it makes clean drinking water from the air, and you can plumb that into any kind of water tank or storage tote or whatever. Also, cheap solar lights can make your trip to the outhouse a little less eerie.

@@nda3413 Yes, exactly right. The Instant Pot I mentioned has both the regular pressure cooker lid AND the air fryer lid, both are removable. So you could pressure cook, say, a frozen chicken breast, swap lids to the air fryer lid, and crisp up the skin as if you baked it in the oven... in less than 10 minutes. There's a ton of videos for recipes & how-to's right here on KZbin. 🙂

You need to make a feeder to hold the hay off the ground for your goats. Goats are suseptible to parasites that come out of the environment, when you feed off the ground and the hay touches their poop, the worm larve in the poop can contaminate the clean food and infect them. You should also be checking the lower eyelids of your goats every few weeks. This is called a FAMACHA check. Look it up if you don't know how to do it. If their lower lid is light pink or white inside they need to be dewormed. If you don't keep an eye on this, they can die from anemia from the parasites. Both of these are pretty important to do if you want to keep your goats healthy.

My first thought, when I started watching his videos. I'd probably start with a mushroom farm in the mine. Champignons don't need any light at all to grow. But I don't know, which conditions they need in terms of temperature and humidity and how much power would be needed to power it.

If the watering system is even half-smart, it is doable. - Using tubing that go straight to the plants or their roots so that only the immediate vicinity of the plant is wet, he can use much less water when compared to just spraying the water willy nilly everywhere. Add timing system that drops water little bit at a time so the water doesn't go to waste. - Use only flower pots or similar (plastic is better, allows evaporation only from the top soil) that have minimum size possible for the roots, too large pots means he would need more water to keep the soil moist. - Select the plants with the water usage in mind so avoid the most heavy water using plants. - Also, rainwater is one option but he has not utilized it as he has had an aim for clean drinking water and rain water cannot be used for that (he has stated this in one of his videos). With out filtering at least. So if he would put rain gutters to the roofs that drain into a large tank, he could drastically increase his usable water reserves.. We have used this to reduce using water from our well. - Seal the greenhouse decently so the evaporated water doesn't immediately get lost to the outside air. Imo, actual purpose built greenhouse is better for this reason. I would at least try with some small scale experiment, then decide after seeing how it goes. Obviously without some serious effort, he could't go self-sustainable with it but it would at least increase his food variety. The climate is so harsh at winter that i highly doubt if growing anything during winter is possible. Lack of light is not the problem, it's the cold. With enough cheap electricity perhaps but he has only limited access to electricity. Greenhouse would definitely be possible but could require more work It is up to him to decide if the effort is worth it...

Dino Dad nailed this. The blue is called a "blue body" and is used for most practice rounds (ammunition) to provide a realistic firing experience for the trainee. The other training round is an orange "paint" or powder round that works almost like a paint ball that shows the trainee the hit markers. I am actually surprised to see this on your video, especially if it is a military training round and they are striking your private property. Contact the nearest Air Force Base (or which ever service you have knowledge of training nearby) Range Safety Office and tell them what you have found so that they can adjust the limits. If it is a one off thing, no big deal, but if more training rounds hit your property, this could be a potential hazard for you.

A note about your sledgehammer swinging form: You'll be able to swing harder for longer and be less prone to injury if you pick it up with your right hand right below the head (and your left hand exactly where it is) so your hands are at opposite sides of the shaft as you lift. Then as swing it up and the head approaches the top of the arc, allow your right hand to slide down and simply let the falling weight of the hammer do the work--all your right hand does is throw the hammer into the air then aim where it lands. You definitely don't want to throw your back out up there, bud!

Hello Brett, I hope you don't consider the solitude and remoteness of the town to be a bad thing. You are leading an amazing life and have a fantastic opportunity to save Cerro Gordo. Thanks for taking us along on your day activities and thanks for introducing us to your pets. Let me encourage you to continue because your efforts are positive and so very important so the past is not forgotten. Strive on!

Your story telling and insight/breakdown of everything on a personal growth level is second to none. So many people need to hear this / don't know they need to hear it. You are a treasure brother, keep up the amazing work. Simple thing people stuck in the city can do is hunt, fish, hike, camp ect. We all need this to stay sane

I don’t know why but when he said rise and shine while looking at the dresser, I really thought he was gonna open the drawer and all the cats would be in there

I’m sure others have already pointed this out but you’re right on with that grenade round that you found. It’s a dummy round often called a Cheeto bc it produces orange smoke instead of exploding. It’s more than likely from a 203, an underbarrel attachment of an m4 or m16 rifle
