I was so bummed out when you told me how this was going. I was so hype for it and had hoped you would be like "YOU NEED TO PLAY THIS NOW" but when you said to pass? Crushed. Like you said, this looks absolutely amazing and all the lore being represented is awesome considering some of the yokai are ones that are usually glossed over or you need to dig for to find representation for (though Touhou is usually a one stop shop). I think maybe they got overwhelmed with the notion of an open world and making sure there was plenty to do so it wasn't like Breath of the Wild but just repeating the same stuff is just as bad as it being super empty.

It really did start out amazing because of how much obscure folklore it was pulling from, and then after a couple of hours I'd kinda seen it all but the game just kept going. A real shame.

Soon as I learned Nakamura left, I lost enthusiasm for it as whenever a creative lead goes away, things never go as planned. And it didn't. The sad part is that it had a great creative direction and aesthetics, but it definitely wasn't near what was first shown or the new direction went for less horror and more of a arcade game feel. I like your theory on what could have happened once Microsoft took ownership, as it makes sense just using reason and knowing how these companies operate. I do wonder if Tango feels itself stuck in a unfavorable position now as they have to make Western style games given Japanese style never do well on the XBox.
