After the era of Adam Alaihi Salaam, a pious person by the name Wadd had passed away due to which the people were greatly grieved. Shaytaan came in the form of a human and suggested that the people make a picture of this person and keep it in their places of worship so that they remember his pious actions and are encouraged by this. After this was implemented, he suggested to put these pictures in their homes. Later these pictures were made into sculptures. As the generations passed, the children thought that their parents were actually worshipping these sculptures and in this way idol worship began. Allah Ta’ala then sent Nuh (Alaihi Salaam) as a Nabi to bring them back to the worship of Allah Ta’ala alone.i The Ahadith of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam condemn the practice of taking graves as places of worship. Consider the following Ahadith: عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ‏:‏ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى اتَّخَذُوا قُبُورَ أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ مَسَاجِدَ Abu Huraira reported that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: May the curse of Allah be upon the Jews and the Christians for they have taken the graves of their Prophets as places of worship.(Sahih Muslim 1081) عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ لاَ تَجْعَلْ قَبْرِي وَثَنًا يُعْبَدُ اشْتَدَّ غَضَبُ اللَّهِ عَلَى قَوْمٍ اتَّخَذُوا قُبُورَ أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ مَسَاجِدَ Translation; Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said, “O Allah! Do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped. The Anger of Allah Ta’ala is severe on that nation who makes the graves of their Prophets places of worship.”(Muatta Maalik 419) عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ، وَأُمَّ سَلَمَةَ ذَكَرَتَا كَنِيسَةً رَأَيْنَهَا بِالْحَبَشَةِ - فِيهَا تَصَاوِيرُ - لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ إِنَّ أُولَئِكِ إِذَا كَانَ فِيهِمُ الرَّجُلُ الصَّالِحُ فَمَاتَ بَنَوْا عَلَى قَبْرِهِ مَسْجِدًا وَصَوَّرُوا فِيهِ تِلْكَ الصُّوَرَ أُولَئِكِ شِرَارُ الْخَلْقِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ Translation; Umm Habiba and Umm Salama made mentione to Nabi (ٍSallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) of a church which they had seen in Abyssinia which had pictures in it. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said:’When a pious person amongst them (the religious groups) dies they build a place of worship on his grave, and then decorate it with such pictures. They will be the worst of creation on the Day of judgment in the sight of Allah.’ (Sahih Muslim 1076/Sahih al-Bukhari 434)ii Your belief is correct, one should only ask for his needs from Allah Ta’ala. Allah Ta’ala mentions in the Quraan Majeed: وَمَنۡ أَضَلُّ مِمَّن یَدۡعُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَن لَّا یَسۡتَجِیبُ لَهُۥۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وَهُمۡ عَن دُعَاۤىِٕهِمۡ غَـٰفِلُونَ Translation; Who is more astray than him who invokes, instead of Allah, those who will not respond to him up to the Day of Qiyaamah; and they (those whom they call unto) are totally unaware of their prayers.[Surat Al-Ahqaf 5] وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدۡعُونِیۤ أَسۡتَجِبۡ لَكُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ عَنۡ عِبَادَتِی سَیَدۡخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِینَ Translation; Your Lord has said, “Call Me, I will respond to you. Definitely those who show arrogance against worshiping Me shall enter Jahannam (Hell) with disgrace.[Surat Ghafir 60]
