GI Joe Classified | Range Viper | Action Figure Review

Welcome to the latest MoDXtra: Games & Collectibles action figure review. In this instalment we're taking a look at the G.I. Classified Series Range Viper figure from the latest wave.
That's right folks - even more GI Joe Classified series joy to share on the channel. The Range Viper arrived at the same time as Big Ben, so it was a double dip from the series this last week or so.
It's an interesting one this one. I wasn't entirely sure about the Range Viper but I went in on it anyway. I've got no nostalgic connection to the character, and thought it was a bit odd looking originally, but FOMO is strong with me and I took a punt nonetheless. Do I think the Range Viper was worth the risk? You'll have to watch to find out...
This is a THOROUGH review. I get into the detail & weeds on this one!
The review will involve a brief unboxing of the Range Viper, an overall view of the figure, and then some detailed thoughts around his aesthetic, articulation, and accessories. (My action figure review Triple A's LOL) Is the Range Viper as goofy as it first seemed with the digital renders? Can I still enjoy a GI Joe Classified fig if I've no nostalgic connection to the character? How bendy are the weapons? All the most important questions answered...

Along with the Crimson Guards this is one of the best troop builders Hasbro has done so far. Just need to acquire enough to build an army now ! Not gonna be easy , they sold out quickly but at least I managed to get a couple.👍✌️

I don't army build, but I have heard around & about that sourcing good numbers of these is a challenge. In fact, I've heard that for every army builder of late LOL Its particularly difficult in the UK, the FB group quite often does a round of posts on stock allocation size for the country. :(

I watched this review a cpl days ago in parts and forgot to comment! 🤦🏼‍♂️… great job on the revue.. definitely an intimidating character and really unique viper. He was one of my brother’s favorites just before he grew out of playing the O-ring guys. I really like the colors. Nice pop on the shelf. He’d look great as a troop, but I need the shelf space for more Joes! Lol. The grenade launcher is quite the gun! I bet in a dark room with a dim light & color filters… you could get some sweet photos. That fake Purple “Evy” Range viper that went around a while back would be sweet as a convention or haslab piece. Looks great & great review! Thanks mate! Any SDCC announcements that you are really curious about seeing/ maybe getting one day?

Oh, I posted an SDCC overview vid just a bit earlier today LOL I'm clearly getting predictable... I've noticed that you have more knowledge and experience with the later Joes Flaffel, I'm not surprised that you've got some experience with the Range Viper. I went back to watch the DiC eps with them in after you told me about them - the football game truly was a bit random, wasn't it? LOL The Range Viper rocks. I was playing with him just now in fact (One Minute Showcase on the way) just super-fun. I took a few pics with that meaty grenade launcher too. Its just right for this mean-ass looking skull face. ;)

Honestly wasn’t sure about grabbing this guy but so glad I did. He looks so evil and slots in alongside the other cobra troopers. And of course those paint apps on the backpack👌🔥

This figure is so metal. I may snag one if the opportunity presents itself. But like someone else here said, I probably won't army build with it.

No - I won't be army building either. TBF, I'm not really one for army building anyway. "Metal" is great way to describe this bad boy for sure, he's got some real battlefield menace about him!

Range Vipers are fairly self contained. But I think Shadow Tracker is a pretty useful dude. He has enough of a "swamp vibe" to be Dreadnok / Copperhead adjacent. But he also works are a prelude to more Cobra Jungle themed items. I can see Shadow Trackers working with things they might make for Classified like A Night Viper. Jungle Viper or Jungle Bat. Oh and that purple stuff is not not just regular Energon it's "Dark Energon" (aka the Blood of Unicron) and daft as it may sound Cobra is supposedly using it to power their vehicles and using it in energy weapons. Range Viper were produced as part of the UK 3.75" 1980's toyline though, (they were not a later character who missed out on a UK release as some did from the 1990's onwards (and a few before) ) I would speculate they may make a Female version of the Range Viper too, as that is lore accurate to do so and the custom/kitbash someone did of that idea looks pretty good. The original & later 3.75" had quite a few repaints so I expect this guy will show up again after his original two decos. I hope we get a Night Viper and Flack Viper as well as perhaps a Rock Viper and Saw Viper, I'm fine with them peppering in Pursuit of Cobra and 25th Anniversary line stuff too. The Cobra Jetpack trooper and the Paraviper would be nice, I also like the Volcano Viper ((though that one might be legally tricky to do)). Pursuit of Cobra also was great for environmental specific stuff too like character in desert or snow gear. we may get Desert Storm Shadow before to long from that era placed into Classified and Desert stuff seems pretty likely... so fingers crossed for Desert Scorpions too ( I think those will go down well in a way like the Range Viper has). I expect they will get around to the Destro stuff in 2024 or 2025 as that is something they can go large on that will build a really nice segment too. I'm kind looking forward to type 2 Python Patrol too. where the stuff is mostly Black and Magenta (like Vypra).

Hi there 90Lancaster! 👋 I think this is your first time commenting - welcome to the channel and thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I've flip-flopped on Shadow Tracker, but I think I've made up my mind that I'll be picking one up. I agree with your assessment - he's swampy enough to fit in to the vibe I've got going on with my collection, and frankly I've long given up on the idea that "I'm only buying the ones I'm nostalgic for" LOL I think a wide range of Vipers makes solid sense: Hasbro love to sell us Army builders in abundance, and we love to have crazy army builders in our collections. Its a win-win for sure with the choice selection you're hoping for no doubt. The desert themed stuff is a given at this point I reckon, all just a matter of time. I don't remember the Volcano Viper though - which continuity is that from?

This is a bit of salt in the wound, since I was a victim of the Walmart cancel-a-thon. Hopefully Pulse gets a few of these in when they start shipping, because I really like the look of them and I'd like to have a couple on the shelf for Big Ben to go up against.

They are great. That whole Walmart thing is just weird - I was lurking while you guys were chatting about it in Discord. I empathise - I've been there before myself. If its any consolation: I got an e-mail from Hasbro pushing Tunnel Rat and Nunchuk to Spring 2024. Y'know, the Tunnel Rat that's already turned up in hand in Hong Kong... (Checks Independent importing retailer sites...)

I think the blue really makes this figure stand out better than that 788 fire team Range Viper that they announced at Comic-Con. I think there's only two episodes I can remember the range vipers were in on the DIC series. One had a pink range viper named Evy whose qualification was just being a hide and seek champion and the other was where Cobra challenged GI Joe to a football game to win Sgt Slaughter.

I'm not super familiar with these guys either but a cool figure is a cool figure and therefore a must have.....I likely won't army build these ones but even as a stand alone he just looks super intimidating as all get out so very excited to get 'im when I get him and as always your review has confirmed for me that my excitement is well placed.....I do wish there was a wash or something on that brain helmet or maybe a metallic finish on the mask or something to just make it pop a bit..........or maybe I'm just being nit picky and need to just calm down.........😂

No, not too nit-picky, the brain helmet would definitely benefit from having a bit of a wash applied to it. You're right - he has got some proper menace about him, looks great on the shelf. Like I said in the vid - I was sceptical originally, but now I have him I'm real pleased with it. :)

If you are in the UK, you obviously got this from Hasbro Pulse, since your packaging doesn't have a chinese import sticker. And in that case, you have to have pre-ordered it in the first hour it became available as it was immediately sold out. So, you were determined to get this figure from the very start and couldn't have decided on it later on. Am I not right?

I did indeed make my order at the point the pre-order window opened up. My period of indecision was between seeing the reveal promo piccies and the pre-order becoming available. So... if I recall correctly... I was thinking it over and considering whether to pre-order for... like... 3 or 4 days after the reveal was made. Seems like a weird specific detail to decide to focus on. I don't want to assume, but the tone of this can be interpreted as some kind of odd "gotcha" you think you've discovered here for... well... I don't really know what purpose. I'd be curious about what you're implying there. But I hope that's cleared it up?
