She's a beautiful doe! A dear friend who had raised New Zealands for many years, recommended giving plain oat or wheat straw to any rabbit 'off it's feed'. She said consuming the fiber alone would nearly always get their gut working again. It has always worked for us, but I'm happy to know what else I can use. I purchased a pair of Broken Black New Zealands last weekend & am excited about adding them to my rabbit crew!!

She had wheat straw in her nest box that I gave her for delivery, so that could have definitely contributed to her getting better!

I noticed the orange 'mats' in your cages. Have you ever given your rabbits a piece of sheetrock? The same friend recommended cutting a square of scrap sheetrock for the rabbits to sit on. They'll sit on it, tear the paper off, chew on the gypsum middle part....in general: make a mess!!! BUT it entertains them, keeps their feed off the wire cage & will heal up any sores on the hocks from the wire cage. It does make a mess, but seems to make my rabbits happy & nothing in it harms the rabbits or the garden when I compost the manure.

No I haven't considered that! I would worry about them eating it and what that could do or what kinds of chemicals and things it could transfer into the kits or meat. But I haven't researched it at all! We do give them pieces of wood and tree branch segments with bark!

I'll have to look into it! We use the manure on our garden too so the dust would have to be garden safe.

Have you ever tried administering a cecotrope from a healthy rabbit to a rabbit with GI stasis (on top of the other treatments)? I wonder if the addition of healthy, appropriate gut bacteria would help?

I've heard of seeding a healthy gut this way in many creatures to include humans ! The issue with rabbits is its a motility issue and not a microbe issue, its convincing the muscles to move again, we have given an enema to a rabbit as a last ditch effort and it worked!

Thank you! Once you are able to bring them back to health it is really empowering as a livestock and pet owner! It does take the right knowledge and a few tools, but you can do it if it comes to it!

Hi, my rabbit is 3 weeks pregnant and in the last 2 days has started acting moving slowly and sitting around a lot, she looks tired. I have not noticed any non solid poop. Is this just a side eefect of pregnancy or is she ill?

She could be sick. Is she drinking? Will she eat hay for you? Sometimes at the end of pregnancy they slow down on eating but they should still be bright eyed and drinking. Eating some. Offer hay asap.

Does she run from you? A lot of rabbits are skittish and that can be frustrating.

Oh no, I've had a few rabbits get GI stasis that come out of it with massage and simethicone gas drops, but one rabbit needed an enema to get his bowels moving. It usually takes just 2 or 3 days for the rabbit to feel better again.
