I think that session was super boring and serious for a child. Her agent basically said her accent is the reason she's not getting roles aka it's bad. When what she should have said was today, we're going to broaden your acting skills by working on accents. Then the tutor should have started with something so far from her current accent like British so she understands what she's trying to accomplish. How sad if parents truly put kids through these types of scenarios. It's so bad for their self esteem.

The focus should be bi-dialectalism, not "getting rid" of the Jersey accent. Your regional accent is a part of your identity and your roots. If you try to eliminate that, then you are attacking someone's soul.

Lots of people are upset at the agent etc for trying to tone down Gia’s accent. It’s only an issue because they were trying to get her into acting. They can’t hire her to play the kid in a movie we’re both her parents speak normally and their kid has a broad jersey accent. Any broad accent can be toned down so you still retain your accent but speak clearly and pronounce correctly. As a kid my mum corrected us when we we used too much slang or didn’t pronounce things. So many people I know find spelling more difficult because they pronounce words wrong.

Personally, I never thought that the kids accents were that strong lol, Gia is a very Eloquent young lady now too...They totally edited this and told her to Jersey it up to make it look like she’s got an accent issue. To say Theresa has the strongest accent out of all the women I don’t think is entirely true either. To me....Theresa sounds like even her English is broken at times, I thought English was her second language.
@dangerousplaygrounds4 жыл бұрын
Yes - I've been in the industry and have seen these situations first hand...you can tell when little Gia repeated the sentence for the coach, there was a deliberate exaggeration of the "coffee" for example, and it sounded completely unnatural - that's not her natural voice at all - at first I thought the vocal coach was going to say to her, "Ok come on, let's be serious - stop forcing the accent trying to be funny - we have work to do here!" But it turned out that the show really tried to pass this off as how the child truly speaks...she was told by the producers to "ham it up" and exaggerate the accent for the vocal coach when the cameras start rolling...

I know this is old footage, but *THIS* ladies and gentlemen, is why regional accents are currently dying out in America. If we force young girls and boys and anything in between to change the way they speak to have successful careers and teach them that their original accent isn't 'correct' -- one day, you'll have an entire generation of people who all speak & sound the same. Regional accents are something we need to cherish because it's like a fingerprint in sound form that encompasses the person's origin and ancestry. And seriously, are people in California really so dumb that they wouldn't understand what a "dawg" is unless it was pronounced "daag"? I don't think so.

Leave the poor girl alone let her have her accent it what will make her unique in movies . This should be taught when she at least her teens so she actually understands and can hear the difference you can tell on her poor face she has no clue .
