WARNING - The photo in the video does not portray the meeting but is a photo of Lauri Volpi in one of his lessons with another immense tenor, Franco Corelli.!!!!! SORRY
Tenor Renato Francesconi meets one of his idols, the great Giacomo Lauri Volpi (very old at that time) in his home in Valencia, after receiving an invitation to meet him through the critic Mario Caputo, because he was very impressed by the young tenor's live album, recorded at the Teatro Carani in Sassuolo with piano accompaniment by Leone Magera released for Bongiovanni Records. It's 1978 and Lauri Volpi gives some technical advice to Francesconi, then insists to accompanying him in an "improvised" aria (M'appari from the opera "Marta" by Von Flotow) which Francesconi read at first sight, not remembering the entire lyrics. Lauri Volpi no longer had great mobility in his hands, but he still wanted to play. Lauri Volpi was so impressed by this voice that he wanted him in Manon Lescaut at the Teatro de Valencia shortly afterwards and reconfirmed him for Andrea Chenier. Unfortunately when Francesconi went to sing Chenier, Lauri Volpi had just passed away. Francesconi appears in the book "Voci Parallele" by the great Lauri Volpi, in a parallel with the Canadian tenor John O' Sullivan.
