In Italian, a vowel that precedes a double consonant is open, not closed. So the "e" in spaghetti (AND penne) is pronounced with an open e (eh) like echo, not a closed e (eI) like eight. So spaghetti would only be pronounced the way Giada says it if it was spelled "spagheti." Every time I hear Giadi mispronounce those words, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard.
