I'm 58 yrs old & live in W.N.Y. all my life,a really outdoor type. We have 2 main types of carp around here, they are common or mud carp & grass carp. We have both in brown & more golden color varieties as well. In the Erie canal they may hit 30lbs ,but remember the water level is drained low every year & it seems to limit their size for a multitude of reasons, but still they are nothing to sneeze at. The native carp that frequent lake Ontario & its tributaries around here are never drained or disturbed & they can max out & get a damn site bigger than 30lbs. Hell we get brown trout spawn up oak orchard ,sandy, marsh & Johnson's creek 40" long & 30lbs? The carp, well, look I already know what most of you are going to say,but do you even know what a 100lb mud or grass carp looks like ,before you do? Mud carp are chunky bull head shaped so your looking 5 foot or so. The grass carp are more torpedo shaped & longer as are the big head & asian carp in Missouri & Kentucky. Your looking around 7 feet for a grass carp. It will reach across a lane of public high way. I've seen pranksters lay them there on the Lake Ontario state parkway. You will get guts & scales in all 4 wheel wells in just one pass. I see them crusing deep slow waters of stream mouths at the lake all the time since childhood. I have hooked, but never landed these monsters ,most reels dont have enough line capacity & the rods break & tangle if you spool up with heavy line. My best have been 3 - 4 foot about 30lbs, 6 -10 test. Be ready to get wet & run down stream when the prick decides to head for the lake.

This is a real good year for the trout season. The snow & rain has been much & the water is deep & cold in the spawning streams. These fish come up no matter what water level there is, they just beat themselves up alot more on rocks & in the shallows when water levels are lower. This saturday april 1st,2 days away starts the trout season here in W.N.Y.

There's some pretty darn good fishing here around where the Schoharie Creek meets the Mohawk River and by Lock E12 (Tribes Hill).
