A method for recruiting giant clams directly to natural habitats helps reverse local extinctions. You can help.
The Aitutaki Marine Research Centre (AMRC) in the Cook Islands is testing inexpensive but effective methods for restoring giant clam populations in the lagoon.
Circular cages protect young clams from predators and water turbulence. This allows the clams to firmly attach themselves to coral rubble.
About 3 weeks after the clams have settled, the cages are removed; the clams are left on their own.
So far, survival rates have been encouraging.
Perhaps you can help restore depleted or declining giant clam populations where you live.
Local clam hatcheries may be willing to help by donating 2-3 year old clams to your project.
