My buddy Johnny Stabile invited Brook and I to go fishing on lake Ida. Johnny is a charter captain who specializes in peacock bass, largemouth bass, and clown knife fish in the Lake Ida area. I had never caught a clown knife fish before this day aka the clown featherback fish, and my first one ended up being a giant fish! We were fishing with thread-fin shad as live bait and and spent most of the day looking for clown knife fish after catching a bunch of peacock bass. The clown's are highly invasive fish and were introduced into South Florida's canal system through the aquarium trade.
If you are interested in booking a charter with Johnny you can check out his website here: ►sflfishingcharters.com or give him a call at 954-440-5200

You ever try eating a mudfish? ( bowfin ) Watched a friend of Robert Arrington ( youtube ch: "Deer Meat for Dinner" ) who claimed he & his family knew how to prepare & cook mudfish, so he did, for Robert. Robert took 1 bite, gagged, and spit it out immediately. Also, the raw flesh of the mudfish looked horrible & had a nasty, mushy texture. ?????????

Eh, I have to disagree.. I'm not crazy on alot or fish though. Some fish like pike are only good the first 2 days after they are caught. Bluefish, no thank you. If you have to do so much to hide or change the flavor, it's not meant to be food in my opinion, but to each their own.

I'm 58 yrs old, and an avid bass fisherman, living in east/central Florida since 1969. I was quite surprised to see you guys keeping threadfin shad in the live well, because I always heard ya couldn't keep them alive, that they die too quickly. Learn something new every day.
@taylorjohnson9035
@taylorjohnson9035 2 жыл бұрын
They stay alive if you have rounded edges in your livewell and moving water.
@howabouthetruth2157
@howabouthetruth2157 2 жыл бұрын
@@taylorjohnson9035 That's true for most other bait fish, and I've known that for years. I use live bait that I keep in a nice livewell that is round myself. But still, most fishing guides have always stated for years that threadfin shad don't do very well in a livewell, because they die too quickly. I tend to believe that because notice how NO bait stores sell "live threadfin shad" as bait, yet they all sell shiners, minnows, and finger mullet as live bait. Perhaps these guys got to their fishing area rather quickly, before the bait had time to die.
@taylorjohnson9035

@@howabouthetruth2157 Mostly gizzard shad where im from so im unfamiliar with threadfin. Just figured they were like most other shad. Interesting.
@howabouthetruth2157
@howabouthetruth2157 2 жыл бұрын
@@taylorjohnson9035 Yeah, we've got the big gizzard shad down here in Florida too. I go trophy bass fishing fairly often, and sometimes just before sunrise, I run my boat through a huge school of threadfin shad, and literally dozens of them leap right into the boat. They are so fine & delicate compared to wild shiners. I can see why they would be hard to keep alive during capture, transfer, and selling as live bait. I would say our bass here in Florida eat more shad than anything else......followed by shiners, bluegill, and any of the minnow species. Of course the bass will eat anything they can fit in their mouths.......from bugs to lizards & frogs. They'll even eat birds. A friend's father yrs ago, had a 13+ lb bass in his small pond, and we used to watch it capture & eat doves coming to the water's edge in the fall. He also had several other bass from 7 to 10 lbs that did the same thing. It was quite a sight.

I'm simply amazed at all the different types of invasives that were dumped into south Florida waters. Of course we have our own different types of invasives up here that the state(in all it's wisedom) dumped into Lake Superior waters fifty some years ago, but we try to take advantage of their eatability. I had coho salmon last night for supper.

Great recipe and great video. I love fishcakes/fishballs and I have learned that to avoid that spongy texture you need to blend a little ice water into the mix when forming your emulsion. Any finely ground meat (hot dog, sausage, fish cake, etc.) needs a little ice water and a little bit of processed starch (cornstarch, cassava, etc) and ice water to get a springy bouncy texture. If you want to make fish cakes again look up a couple of hot dog recipes and take the inspiration from the Asian flavors with the snap of a well formed dog. There are a BUNCH of different types of fish balls. Keep up the good work.

went fishing last weekend my self on the river and got a big mess of Chanel cats for some great eats and i went old school I took a 5lb bag kibbles and bits dog food for chum and slammed them with mild block cheddar cheese on the hooks .cut 1/4" thick 1/2" wide 1" long and push hook in one end then rotate and stick barb back in cheese and the cat fish loved it and the cheese stayed on the hook very well and was very hard to throw off when casting and it was cheep bait and even got at a dollar store yall should try it for a video just for grins .....love your land shark vids and Brooks vids both or some of my favorites to watch and love the cooking vids even my Daughter has made the fish dip from your videos :-)

@@swampwizardmf ....wrong....their official name is Morone hybrid....of which there are 2 distinct variants.....the striped bass hybrid aka white rockfish and Palmetto bass....when the cross is between the female striped bass....morone saxatilis and the male white bass....morone chrysops.......when it's the reverse they are known as the white bass hybrid aka wipers and sunshine bass with the striped bass hybrid typically being larger....these hybrids do occur naturally where their ranges overlap much like the spotted bass....a hybrid of the large mouth bass and the small mouth bass.....and the tiger musky.....a hybrid of the northern pike and musky.....we have both variants here in North Carolina and they are highly regulated as game fish....you wouldn't be allowed to keep them if you caught them in a cast net here....only by hook and line
