I made a mantel for a customer just before Christmas. I used the same techniques that you did on the joinery that you did except I used biscuits to help align the edges. After rounding corners and distressing it I lightly burned it with a torch then I took a wire wheel to it then stained it with walnut stain and sealed it. The customer couldn't stop saying how much they loved it!

I always enjoy another man's technique that works just as good or better😃 I made furniture in Holland. For making large surfaces look old I used a convex knife on my 850 Festool planer and a Festool orbital sander. For scratches a scraper and for dents a key chain with big heavy keys. Watching this makes me miss this work.

There’s a big mounting board that fits inside the mantel that gets fastened to the wall first and then the mantel fits over top and gets fastened to it

The strength comes from the glue. The nails are just holding things in place until the clamps get put on.

A hand hewn beam would not have been hewn by an axe not much more then a hatchet. You should’ve used an axe with a much larger head and done more work with an axe. It looks like someone hit it with a hatchet a few times.

Most definitely, LOVE the majority of his builds but this one is lacking.. I'm a builder for a very prominent barnwood company, we do MANY faux beams out of hemlock, white oak, etc, and this one looks like a beginner DIY, the character is the best part and you can't just take a couple of swings and expect to bring it anywhere close to believable, and even though i scratch my head because he's phenomenally skilled with 50k+ in tools and this is what gets produced, if he's satisfied and its going in his house theres not much anyone can tell him 😏

I use to use a power hand plane to make axe marks then cut the tear out off with a knife. I was doing this with solid white oak beams. Not this junk ass wood he's using
