I think she grew up hungry as a kid or was affected by seeing the people around go hungry and grandmas always want to make a positive difference (: and being old doesnt mean you cant find purpose. Lots of old people can become depressed if they cant carry out any purpose, it could also be something that just makes her happy, not like work that's stressful.
