Giant Swallowtail emerging (eclosing) in real time (Papilio cresphontes)

All in real time except the wings unfolding, which is sped up 5x. The large black oval spot on the top row, in the 3rd spot from the tip, indicates that this is a female. Host Plants include Wafer Ash-Ptelea trifoliata, Prickly Ash-Zanthoxylum americanum and Rue-Ruta graveolens (anything in the citrus family). Filmed in the Missouri Ozarks, USA, on Mother's Day, May 14, 2017. Includes music.

I have a citrus swallowtail I have been watching since early December. Today I went outside to check on it's only hanging by the back upside down. Is that normal? I'm so worried about mine

It will probably be okay. You may try attaching a small piece of microfiber to the surface it's hanging on. The chrysalis should stick to it so it hangs correctly.

By barbules do you mean the orange horn like thingies in the catterpillard head when they get scared? I hace a few living in my citrus trees and I've been hesitant to touch them thinking they might sting me too

How long are they usually in the chrysalis stage? My caterpillar turned to the chrysalis on Easter so it has literally been a month.

It should have eclosed by now. You might search the timing for your area. They haven't started laying eggs where I live, yet.

Stormi, I was nervous at first. It is so much fun! Sometimes things go wrong, but don't give up.
