Great video! I think that Toutle river sentinel, the 321.5 foot Doug fir on Weyerhauser land, 10 miles west of St Helens, is now dead. Some healthy live top 310-315 foot firs were located in the Olympic peninsula, Quinault area in 2021, could be new contenders for tallest in Wash. I bet there are other taller ones in the cascade foothills in the valleys as well. It sounds like all the 300 foot Noble firs, and other 300+ Doug firs were all taken out in the 1980 eruption. Supposedly some LiDAR hits of 282 ft for Noble fir exist on Goat Marsh, and the 295 footer measured in 1989, but many are dying back. That 270 footer sure is a wonderful tree though!

I think we had the same source! That LiDAR map was how I found the champion tree. Something I had wondered 10 years about. I've been up in the olympics quite a bit and I'm looking forward to doing more videos up there. We're building a house there now. The off trail ancient Yellow Cedars are some of the coolest things I've ever seen! I was reading about a valley up there with some huge silver firs too.

@@NorthwestMushroomForaging Awesome! Yeah I read the ENTS forum on new fir, and conifer discoveries, and also several bigtree groups on facebook, where I got my source on the big fir. Wow, those Yellow cedars and silver firs sound wonderful. Very cool, the Olympic peninsula is probably full of surprises and some hidden giants I imagine. Looking forward to your video, and congrats on the house! Cheerz.

Nice video and very interesting, I learned a lot. I love old growth trees. I saw a ton of them and really took notice (and appreciated them, of course), on my backpacking trip in this area last year.

I had to look it up. So that's why I see the burn piles in the fall :)

@@NorthwestMushroomForaging it’s a special process where you can’t allow it to get to the ash stage. Wish me luck!

Awesome, thanks! I really like this area. My wife and I went back to the largest Nobel fir at goat marsh again this year and made another video of it. I want to get back to Green river again too.
