Thanks this was the only video I found where someone does it outside dividing one from the ground instead of in a pot. I have 2 enormous white bird of paradises have at least six big flowering stems each that are taller than a two storey house. It has loads of small offshoots and just wanted to see how to do it. They’re so big that if it doesn’t work it won’t matter. They’ll probably be cut down soon because they’re too big and dangerous so I’ll try to get some propagated before they’re cut down. The flowers on it are humongous. But I just like the leaves

Since your plant is so big I would use a reciprocating saw instead of a pruning saw. The rhizome on your plant might be so large and tough a powered tool would make the job a lot easier.

It truly is hard to cut away and I haven’t had any success doing this but I’m going to try it again cutting towards the large one like you did. I’ve got too many growing in the same spot and would love to put some in other areas before they’re too big. ( a few are over 12 feet high!) thank you!

Wow, 12 feet tall! Have they flowered? It is the toughest rhizome that I have had to cut through. I have another to propagate, this time I'm going to use a reciprocating saw. I've used it to divide large banana corms. I just need to find a long enough extension cord to reach my garden.

Have you been able to see if it survived yet? Would be very interesting to know. Thanks!
@Tropifornia2 жыл бұрын
I had to go through my videos to figure out where I planted it. It's alive! It still has that one leaf, it doesn't look much bigger. There's another leaf emerging that's only a few inches tall. I might dig it up, now I know where it is, to put it in my greenhouse for the winter again. I propagated it back in the winter so it's survived many months with that little bit of rhizome.

@@Tropifornia Awesome! Well, they are slow growers, so perk that its still alive even if it does 't have much new growth! Very cool!

Can you cut the trunk/stem to half the size to help them grow? Mine were hit by the freeze and are 10’ to 20’ tall, new growth keeps dying
@Tropifornia Жыл бұрын
Mine aren’t that tall, this video may be more helpful for you m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHnQXoqBgNV8fck When he cut it in half, I don’t know if it will grow from the cut part. My guess is that it wouldn’t.

I don’t think the one I have will grow I don’t see any part of the rhizome it’s just a leaf I don’t think it will grow
@Tropifornia3 ай бұрын
If it’s just a leaf it won’t grow, it needs part of the rhizome or roots to grow.

It was still alive in the spring, but I haven’t seen it in a couple of months because the canna lilies have overgrown everything.

@@Tropifornia Is it still alive?
@Tropifornia Жыл бұрын
It’s still alive somehow. It grew a new leaf in the summer. I dug it up before winter to put it in my greenhose. There were no roots. I put it in sphagnum moss in a vase to see if it would grow roots, it didn’t after about 5 months. The new leaf died but the original leaf is still alive. I’m just going to plant it in the garden again soon.

I wish I could grow a travelers palm, but it’s too cold for me to grow it in my zone.
