In this video, watch me build a giant golden eagle wing out of wood. This piece was made for my show at Ghost Gallery in May.
I started by drawing a full size template of the bird wing. Then I drew a smaller template for the armature. I rough cut a piece of wood for the armature on the bandsaw, then shaped the piece with an angle grinder. The piece was then sanded smooth.
I keep a bucket in my shop full of thin milling cutoffs. Going through that bucket, I found pieces that were usable. Those were then sorted by size, and cut on the band saw to form the primary and secondary feathers.
The strips were sanded to shape, and glued to the surface of the armature. I used the full size template to make sure they were arranged properly.
Once the main feathers were adhered, I started cutting out the coverts from walnut veneer. I laid out a guideline with blue tape on the surface of the wing, and started to glue the coverts on.
Once the coverts were in place, the marginals were cut and glued on in the same way.
Off camera I sprayed the piece with a couple coats of spray lacquer. Then the wing was done!
Thanks for watching! Let me know what you think of the project in the comments bellow. If you like what I do, please hit that thumbs up, and the subscribe button. Also, sharing this video with friends would be the best thing ever for a young channel like mine.
If you want to see more of my art go to www.michaelalm.com. There, you can see all the pieces from my Ghost Gallery show, and more.
All the best,

I love all the planning that went behind it. Most of us would just wing it. 😀

This is so cool! Seeing your instagram posts for some reason I always thought the wings were way smaller, but now seeing how big they actually are, and just imagining all the time and energy you probably put into making this, truly amazing!!

Thanks Trin! They aren't all this big. I make them all different sizes, but this one is definitely the largest so far. Hope to make some more big ones soon.

Great effort... incredibly huge actually... especially when you are carving the big piece in the initial part of the video.... however, a flying version which can be made to look as good can be made with far lesser efforts .... and mess😊

Incredible work, great freehand skills and an eye for detail and form are rare. My only critique would be that you could have introduced a more natural look and 'softness' by contouring each feather to give them less of a hard edge and blend them better, this would also help with the overlap and prevent the break in pattern or gap you have around half span. My critique is from one who obsesses over the engineering and aerodynamics of bird's wings and less as a craftsman. This work is undeniably brilliant and the desired aesthetic of a wood sculpture of a wing is perfectly achieved.

Thank you; Great video! Question: were the marginals cut out of single ply veneer? I’d like to do a similar feather project and want to get the materials right.
