Nice to see you posting again. 👍 I had a thought on remote rural culture, that might have parallels with your experience. When travelling in SW China I discovered a couple of barriers to using translation apps. Literacy levels can sometimes be low, especially for older people, and not everyone speaks Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) as a first language, and even among the people who do there is often local dialect.

Most of the shepherds you see in Turkey or the people you see in the countryside are foreigners. For example, the shepherds are mostly Afghans. That's why he didn't understand anything from the phone translation. This is like going to the worst part of a city and being scared because you think everywhere is like this. When I saw homeless people and drug users on the streets in America, I was horrified and experienced a culture shock. I just returned from a 16-day trip to Europe and I better understood the richness of Turkey, which you call contrast but which I love very much. If there was a place called the European continent, which I think there is not, Türkiye would be a separate continent, not the Middle East. We have darker green regions than Switzerland and Austria combined.. our region close to the desert.. our snowy glaciers.. a huge Mediterranean region and we are surrounded by seas. We have cities that are more modern or more historical than many European cities. When I watched your video, my soul darkened. We host 15 million foreigners and troubles have come to us throughout history. Everyone should have hope, not pessimism. These things cannot happen by eating all the blessings of the world and becoming alienated from other geographies. Türkiye is paying a huge price.

There may be cultural differences. As a Turk, I lived outside my country for many years. Every country and region has different understandings. You shouldn't comment based on one part of it. Türkiye is a big country and it is very normal to have different cultural understandings in different regions. The situation you dramatize looks like propaganda. Yes, PROPAGANDA!

If they are so friendly, then I wonder why the Turks in Germany aren't. Yesterday they rioted after the football game and also attacked the police. As if they could afford anything in Germany. The problem is also that these very people who seem to come from another world come to Europe and Germany and are unable to adapt even after decades. This changes Germany more than the Turks and Turkey
@witlof549210 ай бұрын
Personally, I find Germans on holiday extremely arrogant. However, in their own country they are kind and very friendly. Perhaps when a person is placed in a different land, they are not 'themselves'?

You should really get off yout high horse. You go through villages in Turkey and they are nice to you but still you complain. I suggest you talk to those Turks who have had encounters with villagers in Germany or Switzerland andask them about how they are treated. Then all of a sudden your experience would apear whole lot better.
@giantcheerio3 ай бұрын
I don’t complain. I simply state what I observe. I don't sugarcoat anything. It's two cultures meeting each other. I'm sure they also didn't understand why we live the way we do. (Or in your terms, they "complained" about us.)
@sabzsazanarchitecturegroup32693 ай бұрын
@@giantcheerioI beg to differ. You did not simply state what you observe, you talked about how you "felt" out of place which is purely subjective. With all due respect, you seem to be on the cynical side of the spectrum and people like you are more prone to prejudgement and easier to be influenced by propaganda. So how you felt, has much more to do with you as a person than it has with people around you and your encounters

She felt out of place because she was out of place. It’s not a huge issue if you’re traveling and taking in experiences. It’s obviously a much different culture with different ideologies and customs. Germany was quite conservative for hundreds of years, especially after the 1500s and the Reformation with Martin Luther. But they have grown evermoreliberal like many western countries when they have forsaken Christianity in the Bible.

What you described your experience Might get more extreme in Iran you gotta learn how to protect your self and stay in your core and filter annoyances and what are your triggers and limits and to just filter things from letting everything inז The thing about traveling I think is to just passing through and just try and stay a little more light and excepting from inside it doesn't mean you have to agree with everything but you don't need to identify Everything Other people say or do it's really about developing a more subtle lightweight curiosity than just diving into every interaction and every person it's just passing and it's not your fault that they think of certain things or that they might make you feel A certain way.

Hi, t he cultural difference is to be expected, in the rural areas. It is the same in more "western" countries like Greece, my home country. I don't know where you are now and if you are reading this, but I would be a bit careful if I was a woman traveling in Iran. Are you going solo or with your companion? And please comply with the norms in Iran as it is not known to be very tolerant of the more western way of womens apparel. Love from a fan!

Its not about religion. I guess its a culture now. I am a muslim who lives in Turkey (northern part) and I can say that things are much different around here. In the eastern part of turkey contains less educated people of the country due to several reasons like terrorism, racism, economical conditions etc. I dont want to discuss each one of these reasons but it is what it is. In islam women are strong as I leaned. Easiest example of this is the first wife of the Prophet. She was a well known trader of the region. I can feel that the "first wife" part will annoy so many people but that is a whole other story with logical reasons. You can just quicly search it up from the internet for the reasons.

I am sorry if those simple people, who seems nothing but nice to you, were offending your western values what ever those values are... That syrian family that were welcoming to you had a tradition that kept them as a unit with inner dignity even though they suffered so much and were expelled from their countries and are living underdiscrimination and poor treatment in every country they are and that culture that offended you so much have kept them as a family unit.

I still think of them very often and I am glad that they shared their daily life with me. I am thankful that we met them. Thankful that we were able to exchange our thoughts and values even though we weren’t on the same page. But that’s what it’s all about. Every time I see something about Cappadocia, seems so touristy compared to when I backpacked through Turkey 30 years ago. It shouldn't be surprising of course and I feel glad that I travelled there way back then however it did make some elements of travel really hard because we didn't come across many other tourists and support for independent travellers wasn't broadly available. Inter town and Inter city buses were widespread so that wasn't too bad but chokingly full of smokers. It was a great experience though. It's a big country to cross by bike though and I can certainly I imagine the challenges as a solo woman. My girlfriend at the time was harassed even if I was close by within ear shot.
@selcukcilek55510 ай бұрын
That's time travel. Some things change to the better .Others getting worse. Turkiye made a huge step in smoking free areas in the last 15 years and busses are one part of them. The infiltration by more more tourists (overtourism) is something which a lot of places experience. Like Venice wants to charge tourists to enter the town in peak hours. Nevertheless adapting to the surrounding and culture is one option of getting more easily accepted by locals .
