Last episode I skipped out on developer commentary, so I have a bunch to say this time. On the previous episodes you might have noticed that both Photon Cannons and Dragoons have minor splash damage against small units such as Zerglings. This is because playtesting of the Protoss campaign showed that early game Protoss had a lot of difficulties against early Zerg units, making the first few Protoss missions super difficult. This resulted in a wholesale buff for gateway units. Zealot’s HP was increased to 125 life and 120 shields compared to RS LotV’s 100 life and 90 shields, and Dragoons gained +10 HP, -10 vespene cost, and minor splash against small units. Once again, since all units are available both to the player and the enemy, RS SCMR took a bit more balancing than other RS campaigns. Since the Terran campaign has already showcased every SC1 unit in real scale, I’ve begun to take more liberties from the Zerg campaign onward to make stuff more interesting. One thing you might have noticed is that all missions on Char feature a lot of mineral patches spread across the map. I cooked up this feature because I wanted the player to spread their macro hatches all over the map to create a sense of infestation, since there is no creep spread mechanic in SC1. Char is also one of the richest planet in the sector and a very important Confederate mining platform pre-infestation, so it also makes sense in lore. The Amerigo was the indoor mission where I first thought up the indoor upscaling mechanic. In order to make the upscaling look more obvious, I added a bunch of things that were medium sized in normal maps but would appear large here. Most of them are in the central bay, featuring a prototype Diamondback, an APC, an Eradicator, a landed Dropship(which Grant missed) and two carbot zerglings. I also added a bunch of siege tanks for the enemy, tho the placement of the first one, which could shoot into the civilian room, was probably a bit jank. I should probably replace that one in a future version.
@glenmcgillivray4707
@glenmcgillivray4707 Жыл бұрын
I might suggest leaving the tank unsieged till you enter the room. Thus the tank cannot reach you prematurely yet has the range to do it's work in time for the swarm to sneak in. Alternatively. Just spread out some firebats.
@asdt560

I actually really liked that first tank. It started firing immediately after the scientist said 'call for help', as if to say that they called for fire support, which is really fitting and also funny.

I like that you buffed the protoss gateway units, part of the appeal for me for real scale was playing the races as they are in the lore, in the lore the protoss has a TINY population compared to the other races, especially the zerg, Lorewise something like massing zealots and pouring them in to their doom is like a death sentence for the race lol You should be bulkier and more expensive, makes the races feel unique, Real scale zerg was always properly swarmy, but RS toss didn't feel as individually powerful as they do in lore

That second mission is quite perfect just as Grant says that they are usually more aggressive, the enemy is loading up 5-7 drop ships just to drop them all at the same time. Also I have to say that the placement of Grants head was perfect throughout the video, since it basically looked like he had a zerg mohawk because of the command panel.

I like the scaling for heroes. It keeps them useful and allows you to use them in later missions for dps instead of making them a babysitting objective 24/7. Like ghost Kerrigan in Rebel Yell: yes her attack sucks but a +2 or +4 with level 2 upgrades feels better than her doing equal or less than 2-3 marines.

I think I like the kind of eco from Sc1. Idk why but it feels like a rich get richer in StarCraft 2, and it's such a liability too, which makes the game less about the armies and more about the eco harassment. Then again, I never really played Sc1 online so... I'm talking out my ass. Edit: The thing that sounds like a spider mine is the Consume ability. Dunno why they used that sound effect for Consume, especially when the animation and the unit death sound convey the idea well enough, but 🤷‍♀️
@JimRaynorRaider

It's that sound effect bc that how it was in sc1. They reused it for consume killing a Zerg unit
@Snowfireblues

@@JimRaynorRaider I know that much. I was actually wondering about why they did it in SC1, since the unit death sounds are comparatively a lot louder, and each unit has a unique death sound.

Have you seen Grant speedrun things with Primal Kerrigan? She probably could wear an entire Jackson's Revenge on each cheek and _still_ wouldn't be significantly more OP. Because the only thing which really threatens her to begin with is massed tank/thor fire backed up by a fleet of detectors.
@professoremeryeetus5292
@professoremeryeetus5292 Жыл бұрын
I like hero upgrades because it allows you to take these OP versions of regular units and make them even better and then see how much they can do. What's annoying though is that in SC1, all attack upgrades for heroes only seem to increase damage by 1, even if it's for NORAD (50 attack) or Zeratul (100 attack).

I love the idea of smaller mineral patches being sprinkled across the map. If there's one thing the SC2 campaign really failed at, it was making its map/base-building feel organic. It's so oversimplified they all practically put a sign up with "build here" written on it.
@quickdraw6893
@quickdraw6893 Жыл бұрын
Random little gold patches around the map would be interesting, though questionable if it would be worth sending workers out to get it. DPS is way higher in SC2 and bases can die pretty much instantly so building far away from central forces is a pretty risky move too.

I've always loved having units that are just "Special". Things like Hunter Killers and the special marine armor you find in games like Hyperion Crew. Treating the heroes as just a special variant of the base units is something that I love. (Though the whole mortality issue has never truly been resolved, I have had some ideas...)

Thinking about it, SC2's Eco is better for Multiplayer due to how slow it is, namely the gas, and how you need to spend double the minerals and supply to get roughly 25% more gas income compare to SC1. This makes teching up and affording higher tech units and upgrades harder on one base economy, and if you want higher tech units and upgrades, you better expand and put yourself out there for the other player or players. It means any one base aggression will have to be mineral heavy and let's the game designers know generally which game state a unit should come online, early mid or late game, and balance the unit according to what they should be facing in that stage of the game, and that there should(generally) be a way to counter whatever's going on with your build. But in Singleplayer, SC1's Eco is better because you aren't trying to fight over 12 bases spread evenly throughout the map or denying enemy expansions. Usually, they give you 2 bases, 3 if you're lucky, and 4 if you're winning, and tell you to go blow up or fight an enemy that has like, 3 times the amount of dudes and dudettes and buildings that you, as a single player, could ever build. And so this faster economy you have let's you be more aggressive earlier on and actually let you play the game. It's great for Singleplayer, especially with the simplistic mission design of "blow up all the buildings" and "kill X", but bad for multiplayer as it makes the early game more volatile, due to cheeses going online faster and being harder to stop because you have 3 extra workers mining minerals and not having to pay for another gas extractor. One thing I will say, I like the campaign maps in SC1 than in SC2. Like the SC2 mission plays better and has more variety than SC1 missions, but the SC1 maps feels more like real places in universe than SC2, especially with the way resources are place throughout, with mineral fields being actual fields and how Gas Geysers tendency to be in the middle of nowhere. And the large amount of island bases and objectives on islands that, if you want a ground unit there, you have to build a transport. Idk, it's just, it feels like you're actually thinking and creating strategy's and plans on how to do this task as opposed to the feeling of the hand of the developer guiding you to the correct solution. Might just be me.

I like the idea of Heros scaling with Unit specific upgrades, potentially from more than 1 unit type. Example might be kerrigan getting attack speed from adrenal, movement speed from muscular augments, and then armour from chitinenous (is that in SC1? I have no idea). You can get all the upgrades that benfit the hero and balance your composition around that, or you could trade a weaker hero for not having to grab that tech. I personally don't particularly enjoy the generic attack and armour upgrades, esspecially in starcraft, so I'm not really a fan of the hero scaling with them. If you are implementing the hero benfits from unit specific upgrades one then that somewhat solves the potential issue of the hero being overpowered early game. Complete alternative is having a hero specific attack and armour upgrade, possibly on the main base rather than the upgrade structure. Allows them to scale without overly encouraging a particular composition.

I like the abstract concept of heroes scaling with upgrades, but I don't see much potential with the vanilla pool of upgrades in Starcraft. Having to research both Hallucination and Psi Storm for Tassadar would be *UTTERLY TERRIBLE* and mere attack+armour upgrades aren't really significant enough on a single elite unit. Meanwhile if we could upgrade the Arch/Bloodmage with Arcane Sentry or the Dread/Crypt Lord with Cannibalize that would be a fun utility gimmick at least in PvE.

I think Starcraft II is better in terms of design for its economy. You're naturally encouraged to expand more and more which demands you engage with your opponent as they naturally expand themselves. It's not perfect, and in practise it's rare that games end up with you stealing your opponent's resources unless you're doing some cheese strategy, but it's trying.
