Pumpkin plants are basically weeds. They are enormous and they will take over your garden in no time. They are also a pain to remove and their stems really sting. The only reason pumpkins don't grow everywhere like nettles is cuz their seeds don't get dragged by the wind. But plant some pumpkin seeds on a abandoned building, and it will downright take over that building in no time in the right conditions. So yeah, this plant is kinda impressive.

The only pumpkin I've grown was for a competition. I was eight years old and my grandpa entered one every year (he consistently grew pumpkins at 400lbs+) and I wanted to join too. However, my pumpkin was only around 10 pounds. Surprisingly, the hosts of the event were very accomodating. They put my pumpkin on the same scale as all the other, gigantic, pumpkins. The hosts even gave me a free hat and t-shirt (no clue where either of them are, sadly). One of the best memories I have with my grandparents.

Well actually (🤓) most of the material comes from the air as well as the water. This is why it is possible to grow plants hydroponically. The soil is mostly used as a medium to anchor the plant and extract water from (and nitrogen through bacteria resident in the soil). Most of the plants (and you and me) are carbon. We get most of our carbon from food, plants get it from CO2 in the air.

that happens because of phototropism. if you notice that only occured during the nighttime, because this plant for instance has a tendency to bend towards light, because it needs light to grow (photosynthesis). so during the night it bends up as much as possible to obtain as much light as possible.

I'm not a plant expert, but I think that's partly true. For example: there's this video that shows mushroom mycelium growing out to form an almost 1:1 replica of the Tokyo subway station (because those connections form the most efficiënt routes).
@angrytigermpc2 жыл бұрын
It's not that it "knows" in any way (plants obviously have no nervous system and "genetic memory" isn't a thing), but however many hundreds of thousands, millions, more, etc., of natural selection. Some proto-pumpkin/-squash a bajillion years ago just so happened to grow a certain way that made it "better" at survival and reproduction. Its offspring in turn inherited its template, keeping the winning formula going. And nature has a way of trending towards efficiency through "trial and error" (though again, it's not a conscious decision or something, rather happy mutations and the like that cause a good effect). Consider bees (and some wasps) -- they build comb using hexagons. Why? Because hexagonal shapes can fill the most surface area without "wasting" space, while also having a fantastic balance of forces across its angles that gives it high strength. But bees don't "know" that... It just came about from some ancestral bug millennia ago that had a really successful hive using that structure because of its combination of advantages, and the offspring continued the pattern.
@BladezAndrew2 жыл бұрын
well usually plans start off as just an idea, once the idea manifests itself, soon you start planning on how to make it a reality, and only then is it considered a plan.....
@amperekelvin57892 жыл бұрын
With the leaves, its determined mostly by phototropism, which is basically the plant elongating and shorting cells by chemicals, the concentrations of which depend on the light direction. There’s also other types of tropism, and they can work together.
