Non credevamo che il Giappone centro-meridionale fosse quasi tropicale! Protetti da strati abbondanti di schermo solare visitiamo il santuario shintoista sul fiume Ashida con il tempio Miikinari, che cattura la nostra attenzione dalla strada obbligandoci a fare una pausa per vederlo. Il caldo è torrido e i giapponesi ci dimostrano tutta la loro solidarietà offrendoci bottiglie d'acqua ghiacciata lungo la strada mentre attraversiamo i ponti del parco nazionale di Seitonaikai. La vista dai ponti è inebriante con le sue isole, i porticcioli sul mare, le cicale e foresta tropicale con gli uccelli che stridono. Di isola in isola ci avviciniamo ad Onomichi, diretti all'ostello in cui dormiremo stasera ed in cui troveremo degli host che condividono il nostro entusiasmo per il bikepacking. Davanti alla costa orlata di palme il sole tramonta sull'arcipelago del Mare Interno. Chi direbbe che siamo in Giappone? Quanta natura e quanto diversi sono questi paesaggi dalle ben più famose metropoli del nord del paese !
We didn't know that South-Central Japan was almost tropical! Protected by many layers of sunscreen we visit the Shinto shrine on the Ashida river with the Miikinari temple, which captures our attention as we pass by on the road and take a break. The heat of the sun is scorching and the Japanese show us all their solidarity by offering us bottles of ice water along the road as we cross the bridges of the Seitonaikai National Park. The sight from the bridges is inebriating with its islands, marinas on the wharfs, the cicadas and tropical forest with chirping birds. We cycle from island to island heading towards Onomichi and to the hostel for tonight, where we meet some nice hosts who share our enthusiasm for bikepacking. In front of the palm-fringed coast the sun is setting on the Inland Sea archipelago. Who would say that we are in Japan? Nature is unspoiled here and these places are so different from the chaotic metropolises of the north of the country!
