This looks like a blast! 45 mph is pretty fast for a vehicle that can do both, imo. Compared to our machines or the Argo, that's lightspeed.

It has a 4 cylinder 1300cc 16 valve DOHC with 175hp, BUT it is electronically LIMITED to 80hp on land, and to 140hp on water. Maximum speed on land and water is up to 45 mph. It weighs 1,300 pounds and measures more than 10-feet long. It can't go through shallows, or you foul the propeller and lose a lot of power. It will not work on tight back-country trails because of its size, but on two tracks and open space it will work fine. It's not for the common ATV driver like me. Oh yes, if you want it in camo, it's a $2,500 extra...

It's obviously a rich person's toy that's otherwise largely useless or without merit for the price. Which is not necessarily a bad thing :) I do however think that they could have arrived at a better compromise if they went for a smaller vehicle. When you go smaller things get cheaper fast. The BMW engine is no doubt very expensive so if it was a smaller vehicle you could probably do fine with a 2-cylinder 600cc chinese motorcycle engine at 1/10th the price.

Gibbs tried to sell an amphibious car in America, but the laws that govern cars won't allow you to sell a car WITHOUT a catalytic converter in it, and on the opposite side the laws that govern boats won't allow you to sell a boat WITH a catalytic converter in it (it gets too hot, and they feel it might start a fire), so Gibbs could not sell an amphibious car in America without violating one of those two laws. I had a simple way to get around that law: put the catalytic converter up above the hood, that way it's NOT inside the vehicle, and it would be one way to get around the marine laws banning catalytic converters inside a marine vehicle.

Matt Rodriguez No shit. But it does mean that pushing the limits over the course of time will over stress the motor and lead to premature failure. It's a 1200cc engine that is already carrying 3x more weight just in the build than it would if in a motorcycle, plus passenger weight.

The trouble with vehicles that try do be two things at once is that it does neither well. Better to buy a really good quad and a really good PWC. Combined, they cost less than this. For $40,000 you can get a pretty sweet PWC and a pretty sweet quad and have money left over.

Not disagreeing with you, Azimuth. Gibbs has never claimed that the Quadski is the ultimate off-road ATV nor have they claimed it is as good as the best PWCs. But I stand by my comment: your quad and PWC will never be able to do what a Quadski can do.

Well they do make electric engines like the Tesla from the first roadster that weigs just over 70lbs, but I guess the battery back would add significant weight to it. But then again so does gas, what about the BMW hydrogen powered engines that can switch from gas to hydrogen depending on what is available? Or those cool HHO generators all over KZbin.
