While walking across the runway at most international airports would get you arrested, it is actually encouraged at Gibraltar Airport. Here, the main road in and out of the British Overseas Territory crosses right over the runway.

Went on a flight into Gib a few years ago. The flight had been delayed so it was dark on arrival. All seemed very much usual. Aware of the approach, but being over the sea hadn't any idea how much further to go. Then all of a sudden the floodlit rock was right alongside, looking far bigger and MUCH closer than I had imagined. Then once that had registered, and a few seconds after touchdown, the filling station beside the road went past the window. What a great place! That was my daughter's first flight, she was 6 at the time and had listened attentitively to the pre-flight safety briefing. When we were about to get off the plane she said, "Dad, we never got to use those masks they showed us"!!!

It's a pretty amazing place to land and take off from as well. Amazing as in 'terrifying'. You often get thrown about a lot due to turbulance, the airspace between Spain and 'The Rock' being a notorious wind tunnel. Regular travellers are used to it, but newbies often scream in terror when it's bad. ;*) Think of it as a free switchback ride.

Know it quite well. I’ve never been across the runway on the road but I’ve been across the road on the runway several times. Always amazes me, watching the swarm of cars and bikes enter the runway, once we’ve parked on the apron. I also have a great picture, taxing in the background of a football game. Gibraltar was playing Ireland in a EURO qualifier and the pitch is right beside the runway.

Something similar is done in an airfield in Baguio, Philippines, but it's no longer operational (Baguio is a mountainous region and is sometimes foggy, some planes have crashed) so vehicles don't have to wait for any aircraft. They just enter through a gate, drive through the runway, and exit through another gate on the other side of the airfield. I've been there once.

When I was there in 2016, the runway closed twice a day: once in the morning, and once in the afternoon. The approach to Gibraltar is truly breathtaking, since the plane makes a gentle turn to give you a full view of the Rock the whole way down (if your seat faces the correct side, that is).
@brianbeach3024
@brianbeach3024 2 жыл бұрын
It’s actually that way because the land is contested between Great Britain and Spain, so Spanish authorities don’t allow flights to enter Spanish airspace (which just so happens to be a few hundred feet to the North of the runway).

Here's a story for ya. Decades ago I was going out with a Spanish girl who was friends with an airline pilot who worked out of Gib airport. We went to visit him and his lovely wife one day. A couple of days previously a plane had taken off when there were still pedestrians on the runway, so we asked him about it. "That was me!" he laughed. Turns out that for years the tower had been giving clearance to planes once the barrier across the runway had been closed. Because the pedestrians took some time to cross it meant that the planes usually had to wait a number of minutes for the pedestrians to cross before they could take off, despite getting clearance. This was a source of much frustrations for pilots for years. So, on this particular day, once this pilot got clearance he hit the throttle and started down the runway. He told us, with much laughter, how everyone on the runway had to scatter, including a large of Spanish lady with several large shopping bags in hand who ran back and forth in front of the oncoming plane in terror. 😂 When asked if he was worried about getting into trouble he said "a) I'm nearly retired so I don't care and b) I had clearance". The nett effect was that the gates were now closed five minutes before takeoff. Thought I'd share...

Deadshot nobody has the time for that. also, you can’t hijack a parked plane, too complicated to most people unbeknownst of the controls and the fact that they would be caught very easily. also, the police would drive up to them and arrest them if they go into the field itself. only that portion of the airport is allowed to pedestrians
@spxzzo
@spxzzo 4 жыл бұрын
Lasagnus also has to be feuded and whatnot. Plus what would happen when you are in the air? No ones in it so kamikaze isn’t really something that would happen. And well landing a hijacked plane isn’t exactly easy. Unless like a field.
