Gibson B.B. King "Live at the Regal" ES-335 #2 of 100 | Guitar of the Day

Back in the winter of 1970, I met BB during a break in the show. He stayed inside onstage while the band went out back with 99% of the audience. We chatted for about 10 minutes, then he offered me an opportunity to play Lucille, which at the time was number 2. He was a true gentle soul. I will remember his greeting handshake my entire life.. one of the best memories of my 71 years so far. If I had this guitar, I would have to have it re-fretted immediately, to put in the very low height frets that were the standard for higher end guitars back in the day, and install Super Slinky 008s, because that is what he used. His Lucile was set up almost identical to my 66 Guild Starfire.. same nut width, same neck profile, same low frets and 008 Slinkies.

This guitar is kind of my holy grail. If I’m not mistaken Gary Clark Jr owns something similar. If I sold every instrument I own I’d have enough to purchase it. But I’d be too afraid to play it. Let’s not even talk about gigging with it. Hopefully Gibson releases something close to this at half this asking price

Did Gibson change the designations in this series. This lovely guitar is obviously a stereo with a Varitone, which historically would make it either an ES-345 or ES-355. Are they now all lumped together as ES-335?

The addition of, or lack of, a varitone switch isn't what determines the model. This is based on a 335 that was custom ordered with a varitone. There are 345s and 355s without varitone switches (Keith Richards white 345 and black 355 for example)
