We refinished a Gibson Les Paul.
Body top is shellac finish. The body back and neck were finished with oil, and the head top was finished with lacquer.
Shellac is commonly used for violins, classical guitars, furniture, etc. French polish is a common method of painting, but it takes endless time and effort.
At first, the customer requested a burst lacquer finish, but due to the painting environment, we were unable to do so, so we suggested a shellac finish.
Shellac alone does not give the same feel as burst, so I used water-drying paints to color it.
The back of the guitar was finished with the usual oil finish, and I think it turned out beautifully.
The pickup cover was also given a hairline finish.
Initially, we were told to replace the cover, but there was a problem and we decided to do the hairline treatment .
Thank you very much for your request.Gibson Les Paul

I love watching these uploads as I have a thing for seeing items created or remade & Luthier have quite an interesting job that has them either staying, when asked,in the past, or to update a guitar when asked... I wish I kept up my carpentry & electronic skills but unfortunately this was when Thatcher was the Prime Minister of the UK & it didn't matter if you could cure cancer as she was determined to & did put the UK through one of its darkest ever times... Anyway keep up the good work & the uploads are they are fascinating to watch & very interesting & informational... In light of the coronavirus outbreak stay healthy where ever you are in the world... I did an apprenticeship restoring antiques in the Philadelphia area around 40 years ago. Shellac was used as the primary finish on furniture and instruments for hundreds of years and is far more versatile and long lasting than 90% of today's finishes nitrocellulose lacquer and polyurethane included. What you're doing is essentially a French polish.. a nearly lost technique using a shellac soaked rag called a "rubber" and in.the extreme, using various grades of pumice to smooth between coats. I should note that the average lifespan for a French polish is 200 years.

Give the guy a break. I'm sure he is refinishing to the customers preference. And as far as the body contours. It was a Les Paul. It doesn't have body contours. And sanding against the grain isn't gonna hurt anything, it helps when you need to raise the grain to apply grain filler. He is doing a fantastic job. Yes I prefer original. But as a luthier or a tech, you do what the customer wants. That's how it works. 90% of y'all couldn't do half of what he has accomplished. And for the video quality, he is a luthier. Not a camera man. If you want better quality videos, do like every other KZbinr does. And send the guy stuff that would help him out. He isn't asking like the others do. He obviously loves what he does. And just wants to show it. Japanese or not, the dude is talented. So with that said, keep the videos coming. Your skill and talent is amazing. And always improving in every video I see. 🎸

Have you payed much attention to nitrocellulose lacquer? It's not all slick and nice. It's wavy and has orange peel. And did you see him apply any type of grain filler? Nope me either. Doesn't me he didn't. There are all kinds of things that have been used over the years as grain fillers. For example: egg whites. Bet you didn't know that did you Mr guitar guru.
@scoobydoo936
@scoobydoo936 4 жыл бұрын
@Dave Hendricks he mixed up the shellack to a grain filler with the powder. You can either use the wood powder from sanding or bought powder. However Shellack isn’t applied with a brush usually but with a cloth and in several turns, that’s what in the end is going to make the perfect polish possible. If Gibson would shellack their Guitars though, there would be no bursts and the guitars wouldn’t go under ten grand because it’s damn labour intensive. All in all this dude did a nice job, however I like my Les Paul battered 🙂

Lovely job overall! As a former (mostly) session man and a luthier myself, I'd have done two things slightly differently... 1) I wouldn't have bothered putting the scratchplate back on having done such a fantastic job on obtaining that 'honeyed' finish on the maple top, but that's personal taste. 2) I loved the job you did on the nut, but when reattaching it, experience has told me it's better to use a little bit of CA glue as you did, but on the blunt end-grain of the fretboard, not the nut bed of the neck, simply because if you ever have to replace the nut, it's a lot easier to remove by tapping off that way and leaves no danger of pulling out any wood fibres from the neck itself. Small quibbles, otherwise - lovely job!

Another great job. My 92’ LP Studio is being refinished by a professional right now. Hope he does the job with the care you used here. I took it apart and polished everything but don’t have the skill for the strip and refinish. If all goes well, it’ll look like a whole new guitar when it’s done. 4 more long weeks to go. As Tom Petty sang, “The Waiting is the hardest part”.

Update: Got my Studio back and it’s everything I envisioned. It went from a dull and scratched up ebony that had suffered from years of abuse and neglect to something that looks like it belongs on the wall at the music store. Ebony top, natural back and sides and cream plastics (previous was all black). New pickups and tuners too. The mahogany is absolutely gorgeous. It’s like having a new guitar still a year and a half later. The guy did a masterful job. Definitely worth it and much cheaper than buying a new LP. 👍🏻

Tip when you glue the bone nut : use less CA glue, and apply it on the fingerboard endgrain side. It will keep the nut from moving perfectly, and it will be easier to pop it off later (without wood tear out). Applies to any guitar. Your luthier or local guitar repair person will love you.

I haven't heard that one before. I've never heard of a vintage Les Paul with a bent nut groove. Isn't it bent due to work error? Maybe I'm just ignorant. More to the point, this is not a vintage piece, and considering what a bent nut groove can do to a guitar, I don't think it's ideal.

Nice work. However the guitar will sound more ‘open’ with a softer finish such as oil. Not saying it’s bad. Just depends what you like. A hard thin finish will give the sound a bit more girth and compression. Again nice vid. 👍

Tom Ahoks ha fair enough. I’m not absolute in my opinions. However if you have ever sanded the finish off a neck without taking the neck off you will notice exactly what I am talking about. Have you ever tried that ? The sound changes quite dramatically
