I own a gold top Les Paul 50 standard and a Gold top studio 50s tribute. The only difference is the standard is a Ferrari in the show room and the studio is the Ferrari on the race track. It’s just all about the trim.

Absolutely !! I bought exclusively ESP forever and always looking for a certain sound quality. For years other people had suggested a Gibson Les Paul . I played through a bunch of different versions because I wanted it to be everything everyone else was describing. I decided on a “Studio”. The main reason was that it was lighter. I’ve had a hard time finding a guitar that didn’t hurt my neck half way through the night but also had a rich tone that a solid body has . It does me fine having that quality of sound without the extra weight.

I just picked up a 2019 Studio a week ago. This is the 5th LP I've owned. The last 2 were older models and I got rid of them because compared to other guitars the neck felt like a baseball bat. This one is way different and after playing guitar for 58 years I can honestly say that one holds tune better than any guitar I've ever owned.

The standard definitely sounded sharper and had more crunch. But idk if its enough of a difference for me to pay double for it.

I just bought a 2017 studio, Pro version, 120th anniversary. It is the 4th Les Paul that I have owned (it includes 1 standard 2014). It is the best LP I own, and beats easily the standard about tone, weight and playability. It worths a half of a standard, what is too much for those missing bindings... I would recommend the Studio with no doubt, mainly if it is a Pro, where the pickups are a Classic 57 (neck) and Burstbucker (bridge), both coiltapable.

Thanks for the video. I own a relatively old studio with the exact case you showed of the standard. I was thinking to change my guitar with a standard and thanks to this video I decided to keep my studio. 490 and 498 humbuckers are amazing to me in comparison to burst buckers. Gibson used to use these ones in 80s for all les pauls and they have a soul.

I played the previous (not newest, it was around 2012) generation LP Supreme and it had those pickups and it was one of the sweetest guitars I ever played... amazing tone.

I have a gibson les paul standard 60s and i was going to put 498t and 490r pickups in it but then I just special ordered a now discontinued wine red studio so I wouldn't have to put the 498t and 490r pickups in it. I believe they're the best sounding pickups gibson ever made.

Besides, you can "tap" (or split, depending of the tone) the pickups to lessen the output.

The "black baggie" has the inspection paper along with a photo of your guitar finished on the workbench where it was made along with the builder's signature. Also yes... the multi tool.

The Standard sounds a bit more forward/present in the upper mids to me. The Studio sound a bit darker/scooped and hot in comparison. Both sound fantastic. I think I marginally would prefer the sound of the Standard. I love my Studio though.

Great review! I have both, and they each sound smashing. Each guitar (due to the different pickups) has their own sound, neither of which is less superior than the other, just different :)

Big misconception with the coil taps on the Studio... it won't sound like a Strat. It will still sound like a Les Paul, just with a slightly thinner/brigther tone. Chimey cleans on the neck pickup sound pretty good when coil tapped. Still, the meat and potatoes is the full humbucker LP tone.

The Standard is sharp and the Studio is warm and darker in sound. Both are great and depending on who uses them. My favourite is the Studio.

The 490 R and the 498T or what they are putting in the Les Paul Custom black beauty. They are great pick ups for sure. It’s really up to taste obviously but They certainly do the job very well.

@@abrahammonroy3439 that is absolutely correct. I have a 2023 Les Paul studio and that’s the lineup that it came with. The newer studios are absolutely amazing. They play and sound like a custom without the flare or high cost.

I went into a store planing on buying a Les Paul Classic and ended up buying that same model of guitar. I picked it up and I haven’t let it go. I like the Les Paul Custom too. Just something about the 490/498…

I own studios and solid les Paul's and there is a difference . Studios are spongier and more hollow sounding in the lows and low mids and mud out quicker then the solid les Paul's. The 490 and 498 make this more pronounced. The studios sound much better with a lower output PAf type pickup. I have BB2 and BB3 in one of my studios and if sounds much more like a classic les paul but it's still softer and more hollow in the lows . I find studios require a different playing technique to keep them clear sounding especially with heavily overdriven open chords.

I have a 2017 LP Studio that came with the same case as your standard but recently they changed to a gig bag. Some years ago the standard came with the same pickups as this studio. If we were going to compare a standard with the same specs as the studio (pickups, 60s neck on both, etc) I bet there wouldn't be any difference between the two, except for the cosmetics and you would have money left to buy a good amp.

I wanted a standard, but went with a Studio instead. I felt the differences were very subjective and down to personal taste. Not worth the extra price for me. I love the weight relief and the binding is not important to me. I actually prefer the clean look and think its a better looking guitar, so did my wife, but that's all personal taste. I think either choice gets you a genuine, US made Les Paul that will sound great and last a lifetime.

Your video was just what I was looking for. I am considering the same 2 Les Paul guitars. I thought both sets of pickups shined at different times. One thing, how many combinations of the pickups can be made using the push pull setup on the studio versus the standard, is it 12 versus 3, and did you use all of the studio's pickup positions in the video?

You're correct. Studio has a LOT more tone options. But the Standard does the classic vintage Les Paul warm tone a little better. Not by much. And the classic LP look for whoever prefers that classic vintage flame top look.

The pick ups in the studio model seem to compensate for the chambering to sound like the standard. I would think the studio would be worth more, because of the extra work involved in chambering it.

The Studio has the 490R/498T pickup set which tend to hit the amp a bit harder than the Burstbuckers in the Standard. My 2016 Studio HP has the 490R/498T set and I much prefer them to the Burstbuckers in my 2018 Standard HP II. It might just be this individual guitar but I think the Burstbuckers are way too bright. To get what I consider to be 'that Les Paul Tone' (e.g. Parisienne Walkways...) out of my Studio, the tone needs to be on approx. 4. With the Standard, it has to be 7 or 8

While the Studio might've been slightly more muffled, the Standard with its Burstbuckers might've been a little too shrill and cutting at times. There are other guitars for that. A happy medium might be somewhere between the two.

I have a 1991 studio and it’s definitely not the same as the modern ones. I am the original one owner of it. Mine has no weight relief, the standard turners and no coil tap. I love mine because it’s more like a standard. I broke the head stock three times. It sounds better each time it gets repaired. I played a modern studio a few years ago and hated it. I knew something was different right away because of the weight. Too light for me.

I have a 90s Les Paul Studio, no weight relieving or coil tap, and the thing is an anchor. As a result, I don't play it often or for long. I also have a 70s Strat with an Ash body and it's an anchor too. Heavy guitars suck!

I’m a studio guy all the way. Les Pauls are the most beautiful guitars on the face of the earth, but those standards are ENTIRELY too heavy and uncomfortable to play! Whoever owned mine first put EMG pickups and classic Gibson tuners on it so it may as well be a lightweight standard.

I'm surprised I'm saying this, but at about 12:30, the Standard made me cringe... I think, in this case, the Studio sounded more consistent, and thus better, overall, but the Standard would definitely be a better singer! Much brighter, maybe a litter better sustain

bought the studio , and usually im playing strat shaped guitars - and thats the maincomplain waht led me to a even better experience. - i can not SIT with the gibson les paul - for me its the shape .. but on the other hand im playing alot and standing isnt so bad from time to time :) .. wanted to buy the Standard humbucker but you kinda enlightend me .. i dont need them...actually i think the standard humbucker are too bright and the detail feels wierd

Nice comparison. Both are excellent axes and it comes down to personal preferences and budget. You can't go wrong with either guitar, a Gibson will hold a lot of it's value.

I rented the smokehouse studio and loved its playability. I didn't buy it because I thought the pickups sounded a bit too generic and muffled. Also, I didn't think it was very pretty and don't look like a classic Les Paul, look more like a copy.

Every comparison I've ever heard has the Standard sounding a bit louder and sharper and the studio a bit warmer and creamier. In some cases that made the standard sound cooler, in others it made the studio sound cooler. Its probably due to the slightly thicker maple cap on the standard, and perhaps denser maple too. In this video the standard hurt my ears a bit. Could be micing.

I just picked up a 2023 Studio plus in the pawn shop in mint condition for $600 OTD. I also have a 1991 Heritage H150 and a Gibson SG Derek Trucks with the 57 classic pups. I've owned Les Paul studios, classics and standards in the past and I can tell you the sound difference between the burstbuckers and the 490r 498t setup is not as far apart as you'd think. I don't care for the coil tap on the studio plus. Just don't use it. Spending $250-$300 to buy the burstbusckers just isn't smart money spent. Do the BB sound a little better? Yes, but not that much better. I recently installed a set of Dimarzio 59 PAF in my Heritage and WOW!!! If I replace pickups in a les paul its 100% vintage for me. The 59 classic and classic plus are the only pups IMHO that gibson makes worth buying. Sorry I meant 57 classic not 59.

I'd say with a Standard you get slightly better workmanship. But not enough of a difference to make it a better guitar. I actually picked a Studio over a Standard and Trad, found it more playable. All personal preference though. For me, all you get with the Standard over the Studio is the binding and nicer cap.

I don't think you get any better workmanship. Both have excellent workmanship. But it's also not just the binding and nicer cap. What you get from the Standard is the classic vintage warm tone, the classic look with binding and flame tops, and the heavier weight with all the good and bad that comes with it. This one is a 50s standard, so also a thicker neck. With the Studio, you get the lower price, simpler look, lighter, slim neck and the coil tap option which are both pretty neat. For example, for a small guy or girl who gigs a lot... the Studio makes a ton of sense. Specially if they do covers... easy to get a good variety of tones. Or a modern young rocker who doesn't want the boomer look of the classic bursts...

The 498 is wound much hotter at 14k while the BB2 is 8k. The hotter the pickups the more clarity you lose . More windings equals more low mids less highs and more compression. 14k pickups sound more clear with ceramic Mags

Don't listen to Coleman, he's upset that gibson is progressing for the masses, buy the studio if you like it, old or new models, it's awesome and costs less than a standard. The neck is way more comfortable to play. I have a 50's standard ("baseball bat neck") and a studio smokehouse burst. I play my modern studio way more than my 50's Les Paul Standard... so that has to say a lot right there. Coil-tap your way into the void! 😎

I recently got a les paul tribute 2021 model with weight relief and it just seems dead compared to my studio 2012 year model. It just doesnt have that Les Paul bend in the strings and sound to it. I think it has something to do with that weight relief making the guitar weak or something else but cant even compare to the studio.

Studio is the English word for Epiphone. I have Gibson Les Paul standard, studio, and Epiphone Les Paul studio. The Epi Les Paul studio is a carbon copy of the Gibson. The Gibby Standard is a much better instrument. Not to mention that a used Gibson studio's resale value in significantly lower than the Standard. My advice is save your pennies, and get a Standard. You'll be thanking yourself for years to come.

This is based on case by case. Typically the g string goes out of tune and if the nut isn’t cut correctly you’ll have issues.,The issue also is a design flaw due to the string alignment. The tone of a Gibson Les Paul is undeniable but it is definitely a flawed design

Normal hearing is very precious. I should know I had mine damaged once with the heavy reverb on a keyboard. It has recovered over many years but is still sensitive. Reverb needs to be used with care.@@cranbournemusiconline
