I agree, I was looking at the Silent Hero, Brakimo, and Tex Creek XL for my primary survival knife and ended up going with the Brakimo for the Scandinavian Grind and 5 in blade over the 6 inch blades of the other two. I believe that the 4 inch blade of this new Silent Hero would be way more nimble in the hand versus the 6 inch blade. For now, the Brakimo is on my Battle Belt as a makeshift combat knife, and I'm currently using a Morakniv Carbon Garberg as my main field knife and I prefer it over the Brakimo honestly. Eventually I want to have the TOPS Operator 7 as my combat knife and get a custom bushcraft knife as my main survival/bushcraft knife. I use the Mora Garberg for the finer detailed tasks, and for the bigger tasks I use my Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe and Silky Big Boy 2000 XL folding saw. My wife has the Mora Garberg, Gransfors Bruk Small Forest Axe, and Silky Gomboy 240 folding saw. For the homestead I'd like to have the Gransfors Bruk American Felling Axe and a Maul, paired with the Silky Katanaboy 500 or 650. One of these days lol.

I have an OG SIlent Hero and love the hell out of it. The blade shape is useful and the thing cuts like a light saber. When I, or rather my wife, decided it was too big for EDC, I went with a Tops HOG 4.5 to replace it. I love the HOG 4.5 as well. The handle is super comfortable, the blade shape is, again, extremely practical for a wide range of chores and the lines on the knife just flow so well. TOPS does a fantastic job with 1095. If the Silent Hero 4 is anything like the other two TOPS I have, it has a lot going for it.

I totally agree with you about deep index finger grooves not being the most ergonomic. I hope to see that become less common industry wide.
@self-satisfiedsmirk55442 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I only have a couple of fixed bladed knives, one of which is a custom knife I recently bought. They all have very pronounced index finger grooves that make it a little bit unwieldy, depending on what I'm doing (Admittedly, I twirl my fixed knives when I get fidgety). I get that the exaggerated groove helps to really lock your grip in and provide you with some extra security. But, even adjusting one's grip midway through a task can be a little awkward.
@listenup4552 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that it's less comfortable to bear down into a cut against hard material like wood if you don't have enough girth of handle under your index finger.

Seems like a nifty little tool. I still enjoy the OG silent hero, as well as other knives. The one that really caught my eye was the SXS to the SXB. The SXB is such a great design, it really lends itself to do so many things well, thus the miniature version of it just made sense to me.

I'm a borderline medium/large glove size, myself. I find that, for thinner gripped blades, peeling off the factory scales and wrapping the thing in core-in paracord often corrects whatever control issues I've got. In one extreme case, I even did a simple twist wrap underlay with a Strider braid overlay. It erased the finger choil and gave me a nice, squishy textured grip. Just a thought.

I just love having options when I go hiking, camping or whatever. Do I need large or small? Light or heavy? Also love how TOPS have moved to micarta sheaths. As always it comes down to personal preference but I think this is a winner.

This knives looks really cool, but I am always sceptical when I see a handle with such a dip in the spine. I had two knives that had similar feature (Spyderco Gayle Bradley 1 and 2) and this was simply not comfortable. So I am curios how the handle works in this department especially in a hammer grip. I agree on the finger choil - in hammer grip this kind of handle is not comfortable and was basically designed for having the thumb on the spine.
@lt60772 жыл бұрын
I have both and agree it ads slop and makes it more difficult to press the knife with a hammer grip.
@Hankhillismrbig2 жыл бұрын
That’s really disappointing. I wanted this knife since I saw it at Blade show or whatever, now that I’ve seen more on the handle, I’m not gonna get it. There’s too many knives, in my opinion, ruined by their handles. It’s so easy to make a good handle, but they just have to add something for some reason. It’s a little annoying, lol.
@Airik1111bibles2 жыл бұрын
Yep ...the BK18 has the same defect . Why designers feel like they must compromise comfort for esthetics is so odd. The handle is way more important than the blade imho.

Hi and thank you for the video, it is great as usual. About the knife. I own, like, and tested the original Silent Hero knife. I was waiting until the knife came out and I´m somehow disappointed not exactly by the knife itself, but, what I get for the money (not some super design like the SH was for me - if you check DPX HEFT 4, you´ll find very close design, made of Niolox steel, G10, space inside the handle and more AND, for the same money!). The space for an index finger is too big for needed just from the picture. On the original SH was mentioned a problem with a generally small handle, here, seems to be the same problem. A thinner blade could be fine but decrease the "survival" ability. The SH has a high sabre grind with a long way to the edge, which makes the knife an excellent slicer, so here it could be the same in my opinion. The real edge is too far from the index without the possibility to rest the index on the guard area. The hole inside the guard has no big potential to help thanks to the "small/light" knife. The Kydex sheath, on the other hand, looks great! As other options even those you showed in the video (the LS M5 is probably heavier but proven, tough, better in corrosion resistance, and cheaper /I checked it today/), ESEE 3 and 4 S 35VN, G10 or micarta, very close price, premium steel, mentioned DPX HEFT 4, TOPS HOG for better money, generally the same knife and many more... You know, in about 4" blade for the money, you can have almost what do you want. Today, the original SH is available for about +15 USD than SH 4 (here in my country). So, for me, I expected and wish to get the knife in better steel for the money. Seems to me, like somebody wants to get more money from the original Silent Hero name. For me, it starts to be acceptable when/if the price drops down about -40 USD. Have a great time:-) FM

@toddk13772 жыл бұрын
Yeah a lot of it is marketing, but it depends on what you want in a "survival" knife and what it can do over other designs that makes it your survival knife vs an ordinary knife design. Imo, a survival needs to do most tasks rather well, not great but well but not just okay either. It has to chop, split wood, carve, field dress game, and do combat. Whatever other features you may want such as certain type of steel, thickness, bow drill divot, saw teeth, serrations or plain edge, saber grind or full flat grind, ect. A BK9 is a great knife, makes for a great camp knife imo, but as a survival knife, it's not what I would call it as it doesn't fit my criteria, but the TOPS SXB does. Same can go for axes, some prefer smaller or larger, some prefer classic designs with wooden handles and others more modernized with solid steel handles. Same reason why someone would choose a tomahawk over a hatchet or felling axe. Imo, it's what fits your needs as what you intend to do with your skill set. The more multi-functional a tool is, the better it is for a "survival" knife as in most cases, it's the only knife or the main knife. In the end, it's marketing and trying to hit a certain crowd or wow the young ones with language that makes it sound better than something else.
@ROE13002 жыл бұрын
@@toddk1377 It is marketing creating a need that really does not exist. The Long Hunters of the 18th Century and the Mountain Men of the 19th Century “survived” with basically butcher knives. Otzi The Iceman several thousand years ago “survived” with a sharpened stone blade 2”+/- long. All these folks depended upon knives much more than we depend upon them today. Our 72-hour “survival” scenario was their daily existence. Mors Kochanski and Cody Lundin in the 20th & 21st Century recommend and use a puukko style knife with a 4”+/- long blade. There is a KZbin channel named Vinnie’s Day Off where the creator demonstrates the value of pocket knives in a “survival” situation; in a 3 video series he builds a shelter, produces tools & weapons, and creates fire all with what many would call a pen knife. Any knife can be a “survival” knife if one has the skill to use it! To say there is a special class as “Survival Knives” is simply smoke & mirrors hype to sell stuff that is not really needed. Enjoy your TOPS SXB, I’m sticking with my Victorinox SAK (in my pocket every day) and my Mora Classic 2(c). If I get stuck somewhere I have every confidence they will do everything I need a knife to do.

Nice initial thoughts review. Some of the 'working-lines' of the knife appear great. The materials, workmanship, and made in USA spells reliability with a good company standing behind production. That said... I agree the design feature of the handle for index finger dips in too much; and therefore the guard too proud. Placing the Becker over top for comparison also reveals this somewhat oddity. Not a fan of the sheath at all, but in all fairness it looks quality and just not for me. Blade shape is quite different from original Silent Hero. Kind of a hunting/edc variant I'm guessing...? Gotta toss this in: I'm still hoping TOPS (if you're listening) will give my asking for "BIG-BOB" some future considerations. A blown out 20-30% larger BOB shape w/ saw-back feature.

Yeah, I know, the CS comes without any kind of handle - just a plank of steel - by the way, you did a great job putting paracord on that knife ... Are they in the same "league" (since TOPS is more expensive) regarding durability, versatility - stuff like that ... By the way - maybe you willake a versus between those ...

Got mine the other day from Chicago Knifeworks. $128. This may be the best fixed blade knife I have ever had.

G'day Aaron, I was gonna say it'd be a good scout carry, but you beat me to it. As a fellow L glove wearer, that index finger cut out is a worry. I've been considering the BK-18 for some time, I reckon I'll go with that. As always thanks for the look mate. Cheers Duke. P.S. btw; I've always been wary of coated blades for food prep, even the more resilient ones, what do you reckon ?

Definitely not "better" than the original. Cool AF knife on its own though.

Tops Knives...sigh. Always sold out, absurdly over-priced (here's a one inch knife priced at a low $500). I've given up on them.

Tops makes good knifes, but WHY do they feel the need to billboard stupid names all over their knifes. Call the knife whatever you want but please stop making your knifes look like gas station knife. It just makes your company look childish.
