Bucks are good, solid knives. In their fixed blades, I have a 102, 105, 116 (49 years old!), 117, 119 & a 124. I’m an avid collector & have accumulated over 1200 knives in my 66 years. Yeah, it’s a sickness… 🤣

I love it. I own 2. I don't know what's happened to the knife industry. It's like they just ran out of ideas. I think Buck saw a practical need for a knife as small and precise as the 110 but as robust at the 119, and they went for it. This is the only knife that's really excited me in the past few years.

They might not be meant for it, but it looks like it should be able to hold up to it. The lack of full tang (and the part that does go into the handle being super tiny) makes the knife so much weaker, I've seen a review of someone saying they broke the knife by cutting (I can't remember what part) of a deer. When I see a knife with a big blade, I expect capability. There's much better, more durable knives that I could rely on more heavily for half the price of a buck. I can't deny the beauty of the buck knives though, they are gorgeous.

Buck 117 is trying pretty hard to be my favorite. I always thought the perfect Buck fixed blade for me would be a woodsman blade on a 119 handle. As a hunter, I have found the 119 to be too big, but it's a great camp knife. 117 is better, in my book. Good stuff, man. Cheers!

I love the 117. The only reason I don't have one yet is the price. You can get the 119 for the same or less. Plus other options at the price point they are selling for. Than being said I have almost every other in the 100 series so I'll probably give in and get one lol.

This is my third comment. I finally ordered the pro version because nobody wanted and they had to reduce the price. Here in Canada they are insane and it was selling for about $250 Canadian and now it's down to $140. They went from extremely insane to slightly crazy.

I have a Woodsman and love it. Great knife. My hand size makes it surprisingly usable and it isn't too small. When I got it, I was looking at the options and I really didn't like just how long the Pathfinder is. Between the 5" blade and bump in handle length, it was too long and I wasn't looking for the swoopy clip shape on the Pathfinder. For someone with a larger hand size, just wanting something a hair longer than a woodsman, it makes sense. And the blade shape is a bit deeper, making it dramatically different than the Pathfinder but a nice, small step up from the Woodsman. So in regard to Buck's lineup, there's a real nice spot for it.

You are correct in all aspects of your review of the 117. It became my go to outdoor knife a few years ago after 40 years as a guide (in your neck of the woods gt). I don't consider myself a bushcrafter nor a hunter though I have done a lot of both and have the proper knives for such. In most of those years my go to knife was an old Western L48A which looks exactly like the 117 but just a little smaller. When I started using the 117 it was like an old friend. Fishing, small game hunting, prepping and cooking the catch, kitchen chores and most chores around camp are made easier with a decent midsize fixed blade knife. A big knife makes things easier though sometimes.

The destruction tests on the 119 are absolutely impressive! You can find them if you look. But I was expecting the blade to go quickly but it did not. And that's probably because of the toughness of 420HC, and, according to Larrin's toughness chart (of Magnacut fame) 420HC is one of the toughest steels out there. Definitely a new found respect for 420HC (at least Buck's Bos offering).
@Jarrych83
@Jarrych83 Жыл бұрын
When people dog on the price, they often aren't familiar with this. The way they process and treat their steel, the geometry of the blade and clip, and the grind make for a surprisingly impressive blade. And the fact is, for US made, relative to the cost of things going up, the base models in the 100 series are pretty reasonable.

The 117 is so comfortable to wear you'll forget you have it, even when driving. I got it because I tried skinning my first rabbit and I realized instantly that the knife I carry that I thought was sharp wasn't. Then I made the mistake of showing the rabbit to my dogs and the 3 legged one snatched it out of my hands and gutted it for me. Didn't feel like eating it after that. I took the rabbit with a .22 break action air rifle, I felt it was not a quick enough kill. So I made changes. I got a mossberg with a 28inch barrel and modified choke then went looking for a very sharp small knife. I couldn't find the knife I was looking for but the 117 caught my eye. I knew that every buck knife I ever used was very well made and very sharp. I liked the size for small game, fish and not catching shit at work if I forget to take it off. We haven't had a hard freeze yet so I haven't field tested it and I protect the edge by using my folding blade for utility task. What I can say is the 117 is sharp. It came sharp and took very little on a wet stone to make it ridiculously sharp and I'm moderate in my sharing skills. The 117 feels amazing in my hands. The balance is artful. It moves with nimble lethality. I instantly knew I could fight with this blade. The smaller size lends itself to hand fighting and standing clinches. The quickness, balance, sharpness and small size is perfect for people who have translated boxing skills into knife skills. I haven't gone around stabbing live targets to confirm my supposition but I think that the blade is less likely to get stuck and if had to fight with it you could stab and recover very quickly. The 117 could absolutely slash, and cut. But where I feel it would shine is in a clinch using reverse grip to cut vital points on the arm then stab more lethal points. Certainly a bowe knife or kbar would cause more damage but they aren't as quick and you certainly fight a little different with them. On the same hand there are much smaller blades made for in close grappling and clinching and the 117 will cause more damage per strike than those. When I bought it I felt I was going to really like it as an outdoor, hiking, small game knife. I didn't expect to fall in love with it as a weapon. Now I'm very curious about the 119. The price point is excellent and in the right hands more expensive knives offer little advantage. The 119 is bigger but it offers the same blade profile, sharpness, toughness and I think balance. I think if I decide to go after deer I want the 119 and won't need more. I think I will also absolutely love it as a weapon. However I feel it would be noticeable at work and absolutely breaks the 3inch rule. Sorry for geeking out so much but I truly love this blade.
@JohnGreyman

It's the perfect around the camp site knife. Where you can grab another tool if you need it. I've had one of these for 15+ years. I edc a small fixed blade along with my folder everyday. I use a fixed for things like eating out (all restaurants give dull crap knives because of the liability of you cutting yourself with theirs), for food prep in the kitchen cooking at home or in my travel trailer at an RV park or dry camping, for making a feather stick, for cutting thin wire or cable or rubber hose, basically anything that my folder won't do easily. Also I carry my fixed blades on quick detach danglers because some places I go, people freak out when they see someone carrying a fixed blade. That's also why I carry smaller fixed blades. I do prefer a full tang over a rat tail but I still carry this knife in my rotation and it still does see use. This model is more dressy so to speak. So like if I'm taking the family to dinner at a steak house and I want to put my nice boots on and felt hat with maybe a dinner jacket, it fits that well. I think it's the shine on the pomel and sleek handle material that ties that kind look together. One of my friends that processes his own game (10-12 deer a year) has this buck a long with the bigger one in his kit. Between those two knives he will gut the animal in the field start to finish and then come home and skin it, quarter it and then take it to the dinner table and completely break it down for packaging all with those two knives. You really do get the finesse along with a blade that stays sharp, is easy to touch up if need be and it's extremely light weight especially compared to say my D2, 1040 and even magnacut blades of similar size. I will say though that I just got the September buck of the month that is the buck alpha guide in magna. I think you may have even done a video on the alpha in magna. But my point is they are very similar in weight and size, you do get a leather sheath with the one in your video but have to order an additional sheath in leather for the alpha September knife because they ship it with a kydex but that would be a comparable knife if you wanted to spend 4 times the price for a full tang magna. To be fair, I have a lot of blades in my rotation and I find my mentally not questioning how I use a $75 knife vrs a $300-$400 knife. In a sense I tend to baby or hesitant when using the magnacut knives over the stainless or D2. So maybe that's where this knife or knives at the same price point have a place. If you break or dent, chip or bend one of these doing what you need to do, it's not going to ruin your day. On a side note, I do have a Dawson Knife that is almost the same size in magna as well that I have been using in the rotation for a year now. I'm currently looking for a buck leather sheath for it simply because the buck sheaths tend to hold up really well for me and hold the knifes securely even in extreme conditions so that does make the expense of a buck knife with sheath included easier to swallow. Another buck knife that is very similar in size is the small 853 Selkirk. The 853 does have a wider blade but it also weighs enough that you feel the difference, it also ships with a cheap easy to break molded plastic sheath, the steel is cheaper and it's not a USA made buck and it's only about $10 cheaper. Food for thought.

I think my disappointment was more-or-less guaranteed by Buck's marketing campaign. Describing it as a mini-119 set up my expectation that the 117 would be a useful tool. I can't find a use for it. I think it is more accurately described as "1/2 inch longer than a 102" or "1/2 shorter than a 105." However, even those descriptions fail to answer the question, "Why?" The 117 offers no capability that isn't already provided by a 102 or 105. In the end, it is insufficiently like the 119 to make the comparison useful and insufficiently different from the others to fill an unmet need.

Because for a long time you couldn't find them. Only small runs for way too much money. Didn't realize they were back in production. Just ordered one in D2 with the cocobolo handle.

The 102 is my preference in that size frame. That 3finn blade style is about perfect for a small game woods bumming knife.

Great comparison! when I get mine I will let you know. I went with the heritage in D2. Yah I could have gotten a cheaper D2 fixed blade, but the balance just looks right on these. And it comes with a leather sheath! If it doesnt work out i will just get a 119 in 420HC. Then I will have the best of both worlds!

as an old fart, with right at 50 years in outdoors/woodscraft, I have seen the 119 and 117 both in real world testing and use many times over. I agree with a lot of what you have said here. one issue I have with the 117 is exactly what you said about the handle landscape. I wear XL leather gloves, and have to stretch them a little ti make them fit well. I find the smaller handle to be restrictive, and uncomfortable. going back all the way to the 70's ( when hollow handle knives were very popular) I was always taught to carry a full tang when my life might depend on it, and I do gravitate towards them even now, but the stick tang of the Buck 100 series HAS proven it's self very capable over the years. I had a 119 for years, but somewhere along the line it was lost. my two go to field knives are the Tops Bob, and the LT Wright Bushcrafter, both are under 4-1/2" blades. both do every task I need a medium size field knife to do exceptionally well. for more nimble tasks, I tend to go with something around a ~3 to 3-1/2 inch blade,

If the handle seems too small cut off the top guard and it gives you a lot more room

Whst does the handle on the 117 compare to on other buck knives ., I mainly use the 105,120,119,103 and 124 . I would use the 102 more , but handle is too small . Its ok for quick short job , but if you on a bigger job , your hand usually cramps up .

I might be incorrect, but I always thought that the term Brahma for use with Buck knives referred to the stacked leather handle version vs. the standard Phenolic or Cocobolo (or other handle material) versions... I wouldn't necessarily trust the use of the term in an Amazon ad as being accurate.

I personally like the size of the 117, I have a 119 and it’s a bit too big for hunting. I usually use a 112 or a 110 to process my deer. And I think it could be a nice knife to use for deer. The 119 is more of a survival size knife, or a combat knife in my opinion. Love the style of the 119, and I love Buck knives in general. I think I would like to try the 117 out for hunting, but I wouldn’t want anything bigger. Thanks for the video, I enjoy the tests you do on the knives you review. Hope you have a good one.

I love all the classically styled Bucks. I would like to know why they called it the Brahma though. They had a 119 Brahma years back that was black oxide coated and had a leather stacked handle. That thing was trash. The only 119 that I have ever sold off.

Bought my first buck knife ever a 119 special with the steel upgrade and the Micarta handles. First non benchmade knife I’ve bought in years. I absolutely hated the feel and slickness of the traditional black phenolic handles but when I saw they came out with the micarta I jumped on it

Well, you helped me spend some more money, lol🤣 I ordered the 117 Pro, and it showed up yesterday. First impressions are on point with yours. I like it, super light, don't even know it's on your belt which is great for edc and hiking, my hand is a bit cramped on the small handle but it isn't uncomfortable when using, overall really happy with it. Time will tell how the s35vn holds up but should be good. Thanks for another great video brother!

😂😂😂 really? Hard work 😂😂😂? A firefighter in a blazing forest fire or a surgeon operating a child with a brain tumor. Fisherman at 30ft waves in the cold season. Soldiers fighting a war or mountain rescue teams. USMC, Navy Seal. Ah well you get it by now. These guys and girls are doing the hard work. This? This is not even working. It's a fantastic hobby that became the source of income. Nothing more, nothing less. Hard work 😂😂😂😂

Great looking knife, and what can I say, it's a Buck. That being said though, there needs to be a price offset from the 119 because it's much smaller. I would be comfortable paying somewhere in the $50.00 range. : )

😅I collect Buck knives, so I love the Brahma reintroduction. But whether or not it stays in production depends on whether the same conditions exist that took it out of production. My guess is that it will enjoy a resurgence while all us collectors buy a bunch of them but then will decline because of the previous reasons for the decline. I didn't realize the price was the same as a 119. That may kill it.
