I do a lot of motorcycle camping and the bear grylls version of this is what I bring. I use it for fire prep and it works fine without taking up my very limited space on my bike. It is great for my scenario. I would also use it for hunting out west in a scenario where you are hunting far from the lodge or cabin and need to make blind. In summary, there are scenarios where it is a really good choice because of size and weight. I use my Fiskars x7 (might be a little bigger, x10?) and my Schrade hatchet in all other scenarios. I keep them in my truck.

I also got this for moto camping... It's such a strange niche, where weight doesn't really matter as much but size matters a ton. I guess I will find out soon if I made a good choice

What people aren't getting is that this isn't meant for Paul Bunyan work. It's a great lightweight tool to use rather than your knife for certain tasks around camp.

It's perfect where ounces count, like backpacking and bikepacking. I'll also carry a Silky saw.

I'm not sure I understand why you thought something different might happen. A hatchet that short simply can't compete with a 10" chopping knife or a hatchet with a longer handle. Physics is still real and leverage still matters.

My friends and I fuck around in the woods a lot and this is gonna be perfect for clearing paths. Just ordered it, I’m excited 👍
@JD4-702 жыл бұрын
Instead of beating your hatchet with another branch to drive it through your log, simply wedge your hatchet slightly off centre to your log, flip the entire thing and hit the back of the hatchet on your chopping block, this will use the logs weight you’re trying to cut against itself to drive your hatchet through relatively effortlessly.

That pack hatchet is the same as the bear Grylls hatchet. Works good for what it's designed for.

Should've compared it to the Fiskars X5. Comparing it to the X7 is not really fair, it's in an entirely different category if you ask me. The X5 performs similarly, but wears out your wrist real fast if you use it to delimb a LOT of small things. I have the BG version of the hatchet and it'll work fine for smaller tasks, I've previously paired it with a saw and small Victorinox in my pocket and it was a decent combo.
@thesandmanii81095 жыл бұрын
I have the BG version of this. It’s great for battening and limb clearing on soft wood, but as survival tool, you’d probably have a heart attack before you finished your shelter. I like my Fallkniven A1 Pro for most anything a hatchet will do. The Gerber is ok if you like constant blade sharpening.. A Silky Bigboy and a Fallkniven A1 Pro will accomplish most any wood working tasks in the bush..

Useful comparison. Would have been interesting to compare the Gerber to the Fiskars X5, which is the same size, but has a heavier, more typically axe-like head, i.e. splits, rather than just cuts, wood.

If you can find one, I have a Timberline Russ Kommer Bush Pilot Survival Hatchet that is about the same size as this Gerber pocket hatchet, but is so much more useable. Full quarter inch thick makes a lot of difference. Had it for maybe 15 years now. It was used a lot the first five or six years and is still holding its own. But if you want a good small survival hatchet, I recommend the TOPS Wolf pAX 2. A very solid piece of kit. Made in the USA.

splitting with a knife is incomparable to the hatchet (any of the two) even when you use a baton when you dont have a saw cut flat end pieces. hatchet head gives much longer and narrower wedge which you can drive into a log from a side.

Hey guys great video, I went and bought the ONTARIO MARINE RAIDER BOWIE because of your past review about the bowie and took it in the backyard for some heavy chopping and chipped the blade from the tip to about an inch down the blade !!! They are using a 1080 carbon steel now instead of 1095 carbon steel.I don't know if it is the steel or a bad grind? What do you guys think?
@glbwoodsbum25675 жыл бұрын
Ontario's website says that they use 1095 for the SP-10 Bowie. With a 57 to 59 RC hardness. Also 1080 steel would not cause a problem whatsoever.
@christianwilliams47955 жыл бұрын
I think that the lack luster performance might be a combination of poor design and expectations. Lots of people really love the GB Mini Hatchet and the HB Jonaker which is even lighter than this one but supposedly is better balanced because of the wood handle. Secondly, the people who use these pocket axes use them for cutting saplings and carving dry wood. Not cross cutting dry wood. I've recently been carrying a tiny 11 inch hatchet for said tasks and been loving it. I doing the dry cross cutting and splitting I would be using a silky saw, mallet and wedge to do that. That's assuming I am concerned about size/weight.
@kimrandall81352 жыл бұрын
I don't know, I kind of like it. It won't take the place of my dedicated camping hatchet, but I would rather use it for everyday carry than a hunting knife. It would do the job in a pinch. And it looks like you could choke up the handle and use it for the more delicate tasks usually done by a knife. The hammer type back, looks like you could use to baton through a log to make slots. I don't think a knife could do that.

Put together a pack for one 4'8" and a better steel even lighter hatchet for fire wood makes more sense than the larger knife. Which is what I selected. Such a small person does not lend well to trying to control such a large blade so lets not create that situation. A folding and straight small blades are included. Given the amount of small limbs laying around in the Pa woods. Keep in mind short stature and not chopping logs. Sometimes the seemingly best option should be otherwise. lol Although not normal

That said I do own the Gerber Gator Kukri....and I love that thing. It annoys the crap out of me that Mora charges $22-$35 for their little Eldris yet you can buy a hatchet for the same price. I know this has zero to do with your review brother LOL....I was gonna buy another Eldris but I am so tired of Mora price points , that freaking Eldris is so overpriced yet we all took the bait. I was expecting to see it drop down to $15 for the basic knife but nope its still $22......I can buy the Heavy companion for $15-19 yet the Eldris is less than half the materials of the HD. I wish reviewers would start to call this crap out, you guys have the ability to influence these things ...THE MORA ELDRIS IS INSANELY OVER PRICED. Anyways that's my off topic rant for the day.

There really is no replacement for displacement......size and weight makes work easier, it's simple physics yet companies are always trying to sell this magic bullet. CRAZY! I'll stick with my Junglas, but even if I wanted to use some sort of axe, any of the cold steel tomahawks would be better, even an old shingling hatchet . I have a hultafors 850g trekking axe on a 19" handle, paid about $90 shipped. Get a real tool to do work with....I mean yeah you can dig a fox hole with a spoon but your neighbor with the E-tool will be settled in for the night before you are ankle deep.
