Nice review. Over the last 6 months, I’ve added 6 Cold Steel folders to my collection. Of those, 4 displayed what I would call quality control issues: 2 of the 4-inch blades have an incredibly stiff Triad lock that’s painful to disengage (although I realize this is a common complaint against the Triad), a third 4-inch blade came with such a loose pivot that the blade rattled in the handle when I shook it (that one was easily fixed with a drop of Locktite & a turn of the Torx driver) & the fourth knife blade, upon closing, recesses so deeply into the handle that the very center of the blade edge strikes a metal pin holding the scales together, putting an ever so slight ding in the blade. When I discovered that flaw before I even used the knife, I emailed Cold Steel, and they responded that they would replace that $32.00 budget knife if I paid about $10.00 to ship it to them, turning a $32.00 purchase into a $42.00 one. I’ve opted not to do that. I’ve not exactly turned against Cold Steel, but my 2021 experiences with the company have really cooled my enthusiasm for it.
@lionknives33 жыл бұрын
I hear you! My Recon 1 is off center almost touching the scale. And the screws are pretty garbage. I wanted to remove the clip to sand down the g10 and that was not possible because one screw was just turning! The second one fall out before somehow. And the third screws head was stripped! And now I noticed that the screw what was just stripped, is now lost 😅😂 one screw is left what is free spinning. Other that the lock and steel there is no other thing to recommend them. I was a fan but that changed.

It can’t compete with the designs that undercut the pricing. I prefer a slow opening style vs. current snap-open liner locks so I like it, especially that slim handle vs my old Medium Voyagers - non-snappable has fewer legal issues in my state (no gravity knife issues) - but liner locks are killing lockbacks due to dramatic flipper actions. At street pricing this should have G10, and if they want to have some sex appeal, D2 or S30. Taiwan sourcing isn’t automatically better than China anymore, and Chinese heat treatments are fine now.
@mdubb48553 жыл бұрын
I’m now stuck in a locality with a 3” blade limit and sudden this looks much more interesting. I don’t trust liner locks for any scenarios where there could be abrupt pressure downward on the blade, and I don’t trust conventional lock bars nearly as much as TrIAd. So as boring as this looks, I ordered one.

People are sleeping on AUS10. There doesnt seem to be a whole lot of real world tests of it yet, and all of them you find on youtube have it performing insanely well. I understand that the recon 1's size is what fits as a tough an big knife with a good lock up with the traid lock but when you make a knife a compact edc size it would require a fidget factor in which doesn't really peak my interest as much. In my opinion the smaller edc sizes tend to do more light duty stuff and have a lighter weight.

Its the steel, man. They moved to s35vn for their most popular designs. Half those designs came out with 8cr13 which is what half of all budget knives are made of now. I’ve got the new voyager...what I’m saying is...since the new ownership of Cold Steel., any new or upgraded knives come with a crazy high price tag. Unlike back when Lynn still owned it. It’s not clear that S35VN is a “better” steel. Hold an edge better, I would expect that; but what about toughness? Ease of sharpening? Since the original mad rush to S30v and S35VN (which I consider the start off the “super steel” era), other super steels of note have emerged as well. A part of me wishes the Mini Recon 1 and Air Lite had such a “super” steel, but what they already have (AUS 10) is awfully good according to reports, and doesn’t require particle technology to hit a good standard. Also, Spyderco is delivering some fantastic results from mere 8Cr13 (better mill with better quality control? Better heat treatment? I don’t know but when Cedric and others run tests, Spyderco 8Cr13 surprises). So I agree with you - the Mini is a real tough gem of a knife.

Cold Steel and Benchmade make mini versions of knives that are already the right size. A mini Bugout, really?:)

What don’t you like? I was thinking of getting the mini tanto together with the regular sized recon 1 in spear point.

I think the new owners of cold steel are keeping up with the quality of the old company…. I was disappointed that they did not show at the eastern sports show in Harrisburg pa this year…. Cold Steel was always there and the new company didn’t show.

aus-10 is definitely NOT "very rust resistant", at least not cs's aus-10, it is one of the worst stainless performers in that regard! maybe it's the ht, maybe the stonewash finish they put on their blades, but literally EVERY cold steel in aus-10 i've owned (also the ad 20.5, same factory i think) started to rust after a couple of days in my pocket. i carry gec's in 1095 hc daily with no issues and no oil on the blades, just saying. aus-10 is a great and tough budget steel, but corrosion resistance is definitely not one of its strengths.

Thank you for the feedback. That is interesting I have several Cole steals and in AUS10 and I’ve now been from Texas to Alabama to Florida to Pennsylvania and haven’t been dealing with any rust issues. Maybe it was a bad batch a while back who knows.

I haven't had this problem with CS aus10 and I live in a very wet and humid environment.

I've carried knives with AUS-10 in hot humid 🥵 weather & not a single spot of rust ever.
