Hey thank you so much for your honest review and your very kind words! We really appreciate it. I think you really got the pro's and cons of the knife right and well explained! Very good feedback. You're 100% right about the sheath. We talked about this with BPS. its a wrong sheath choice even when its a good sheath but its not good for this knife. they should be replacing sheaths on them soon for a new one. For us this is something that needs to be fixed ASAP. But the value they deliver for the price is simply amazing. Btw. I was watching your channel even before we created our own! So i'm kinda giggling about being in the video hahaha Thank you so much! You rock!

Thanks so much, you guys are really crushing it! The Bushmate design is really well done. I really like it, i’m glad that they are going to swap out the sheath and I know bolts will take away from the aesthetics of the design, but if they can swap them out for bronze colored bolts, or screws of some kind, that would be awesome! Would love to stay in touch, and figure out a way how we could collaborate at some point. Either, if you guys ever make it to the states, or I might have to plan a trip to Europe! Talk with you soon and Merry Christmas!!

@@gideonstactical it really got me thinking. Our particular knife didn't have the problem but I've had other knives with similar knife have the problem. Maybe I'll ask them to make a sample with screws. Problem is they probably can't be the brass. Anyway! Thanks a lot man and thank you for the hospitality you will also always be welcome here! @@DutchBushcraftKnives Personally, I would rather have the bolts as well. They are far more functional, and allow far more flexibility for customization. I don't care about the brass. And honestly, BPS would probably rather use bolts, because then it would be the same as all their other knives. As far as the sheath goes, at first I thought it was the standard BPS sheath, but now that I realize it's different, I would just prefer the standard BPS sheath.

A great way to stop the handles from shifting is to stop beating it with a log and simply use them like they were designed. Buy a light hatchet. Why is it that everyone thinks you’re supposed to beat your knives through logs? That’s for survival knives.
@Phaminator525
@Phaminator525 4 ай бұрын
DBK the designers of this knife used it to baton through wood in their video. So it quite literally is designed to do that. I don’t think splitting wood is that extreme to where it would be in the survival knife category. In bushcraft you still need to be able to split wood. General camp knife activities. Don’t need a hatchet for that. I’m not processing a bunch of wood I’m just making one fire. Knife is a good versatile tool that can do it

Thank you for the great video. In my experience, low-cost companies very often have problems with the grinding. I usually have to rework the bevel on these knives. The BPS knife seems to me to be no exception in this respect. The overall package could still be improved.

BPS sells a similar Scandi knife with the same steel but screwed down scales, better sheath with ferro rod (together $40) or even the Scandi blade blank with screws ($22) if you want to take your first steps in making your own knife (with Micarta for example). Other BPS leather sheaths with/without ferro rod are also available separately ($12 - $20).

Here is my take on the Sheath and scales….. add a screw and leather collar washers to the lower opening to be able to add retention and for the scale pins…… carefully drill out the pins… add some adhesive and nice torx screws. You may have to counter sink them depending on the fit. But that should solve those problems rather cheaply. Just my opinion though.

Bought this instantly when it came out and have mixed feelings about it. It‘s rather small which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But would not have guessed before. The sheath is not usable! But looks good 😂 The knife is kind of unfinished, like all of my bps and beavercraft knifes. Just sand it a bit and it‘s good to go. This time I even had to sand the metal since it has some sharp edges at the guard. The main problem was it came rusted. That’s a nogo for me. But I love the handle ergonomics.

With regard to the wood handle scales on ANY knife--finished or unfinished. As long as they are nor coated in lacquer or clearcoat, and are bare wood (even if finished with Danish Oil) you should give them an annual (or twice-yearly if you really abuse it) coating of Tung Oil. Use the 100% pure, REAL Tung Oil, not "Tung Oil Finish" products. Loggers and Forestry Service people have been doing that for nearly a century to the handles of their tools, and many of them last longer than the owners, even under daily, torturous, professional use and abuse...

Hi ! Just today, 3 weeks after ordering, I received the BPS Bushmate DBK knife. Unfortunately, my first impression is not positive. Apart from the fact that the knife is slightly corroded, the quality of the finish is at least average. Poor finish can be felt in the hand, the upper edge looks as if someone forgot to finish it, because it even hurts the fingers. But the chairs spark like crazy!!! (my opinion 10/10). on the other hand, the sheath is finished like a Premium knife, but unfortunately it does not hold the knife safely inside. It can even be removed from a closed sheath. I think it can be recommended to teenagers starting their adventure with bushcraft to try a different knife than the Mora Campanion, or to use such an inexpensive knife ($70 with shipping and engraving) to learn sharpening or personalize it yourself. In my opinion, it's better to spend USD 70 on a better, more expensive knife (e.g. FV Idun), because for now I feel like I wasted USD 70. Of course, the above is only my subjective opinion and may apply to only one copy, although I also have a BPS Adventurer and my opinion about this model is definitely better. Apart from poor balance (the blade is too far forward) and a slightly too small handle in relation to the size of the knife, it is a great tool for an even lower price than the Bushmate. Best regards and I hope you will understand my opinion. I'm waiting for your next awesome videos and tests.

I just moved the button stud on my sheath by unscrewing it and punching a new hole. I then glued and filled the old hole with the leather plug from the new hole. Not perfect, but tension is much much better. No real risk of the knife falling out now. Not a bad little budget knife.

If you told me it was 1095 id have no second thoughts. I honestly dont notice any practical difference between is 1066 and let's say moras 1095. If it performs good, then it is good steel. A good heat treated 1066 will perform better than a poorly heat treated 1095, remember that before worrying about the specs and numbers.

I moved the stud on the strap about a half inch which did provide adequate retention. Then I wet formed the sheath which improved the fit even more, but it would still have been better if they just included their standard sheath like the one on the HK5, Adventurer, and Savage, ideally trimmed down a little shorter so more of the handle is exposed.

I put a convex edge on it with my ken onion grinder attachment, then I sanded the chines off the handle to make it more like a bark river handle and then I fixed the sheath problem by punching another hole in the retention strap. Bam! now its an awesome package. Just the sheath and ferro rod are worth the price alone.

Thanx for the review. The blade seems fine but with the scales and the sheath, I personally feel like a esee would be a better buy. Though I love DBK and watch their channel alot. Just doesn't seem like them to design a knife like that in which thr scales would come lose and the sheath doesn't hold the blade well.... cause if they knew this and are able to fix these flaws I believe they would or will, depending on whatever agreement or arrangement they have with BPS knives. I'd love to have one but until those flaws are fixed I'm afraid I'll pass. Again thanx for the awesome review. Some micarta scales or even those with bolts would be alot better like you mentioned. ❤

I've got a BPS bushcraft knife (I've unfortunately forgotten the model name, I've had it so long) that has never given me any trouble. The Scandi was beautiful and even from the factory and it takes an absolutely ridiculous edge with no effort. Mine actually has screws in the handle, which haven't ever loosened on me, but that seems to rectify the issues with pins you've experienced (if they loosen up, just tighten the screws). Same sheath as the savage, but with a fire steel. I'll see if I can find the model later, and I'll update this comment if I can. Edit: the model was the Adventurer. Great value at 40 bucks right now!

It is not 1066 steel actually. It is 65Г (65G) leaf spring steel from soviet era. The reason BPS marked it as 1066 is foreing customets, which will never know about 65G steel. They are close in compound, but enough different for 65G to be better than 1066, 1075 and 1095 also. So do not mind about that 1066 cause it is not it, it is 65G, much better steel, especially if heat treated properly.

BPS is aware of the sheath issue and is working on a version 2. DBK reviewed their own knife, and in honesty they did not give it a 10/10. I am on with firesteels on a sheath but nothing ese, not into the heavy "survival kit on a sheath" mentality. I like scandi and flat grind for 4" blades. I do have a few that may be thought of as high sabre grind, high meaning the flat part is up past the center line.

At the price point of the knife I’d pop off the scales and put micarta scales on with bolts. You can get micarta slabs for around 10 to 15 bucks and shape them yourself. At least that’s what I do if I get a knife with scales I don’t like.

The BPS DBK was first brought to my attention when the DBK boys featured it on their Channel. You're right, good Channel and good guys. It was being offered on Amazon that same week; so I looked at the offering with pictures. I noticed several flaws right out of the gate. As you point out, the sheath is not even designed for this knife. Question is, which BPS knife is it actually designed for? The fire steel Loop regarding geometry of the sheath look and functionally are poorly thought out even if afterthought. As far as the knife itself goes..... I definitely do not like the sharpening choil. While the handle profile looks okay, it's pinned in like a common kitchen knife. We know that BPS can do a pseudo scandi type, but why not on the DBK? With all due respect to the DBK boys and BPS, this collaboration of sorts, has too many cons versus the pros and especially add an extra $10 worth over most of the rest of the BPS lines. Great and thoughtful review.

Interesting review ! About ferro rod, I don't care : if it's given with the knife that's ok, if not it's not a concern because it's far from being my priority. It could be a minor plus, not leading me to buy a knife instead of another. About this knife... it looks nice but not great. I used to rely on spanish cutlery when it came to budget fixed flades, and never been disappointed with them. My Nieto Coyote seems to have a similar size, the price was also in the same range (45eur), it has a leather sheath that has good retention, and its AN.58 blade is good enough (around 58HRC, hollow grind, huge stain resistance, easy to sharpen). Coming to scandi I rely on Marttiini models, as always (Condor and Lumberjack). General thoughts about grind : I tend to believe that high saber grind is the best shape for all around tasks, I love hollow grind for everything except carving, full flat is also good but I tend to like it on my folders (don't know why, it's very subjective), scandi is great but I don't really have the need on my daily tasks (rare usage), never had a convex so I can't tell.

I have the trc dbk knife and it is awesome but for the money the joker lynx is unbeatable..very similiar design awesome blade takes a beating and holds a good edge easy to sharpen back up for around $100..i cant justify 50$ for this when it just cant compete with joker..the trc on the other hand is a beast but for 400$ it better be

4 children age 13 to 11 months old survived 40 days in the Amazon jungle after surviving a plane crash with absolutely nothing. Snakes, scorpions, lack of food and water and dangerous animals everywhere and they made it through. It's embarrassing that we need high tech GPS, state-of-the-art art knives backpacks water filters Etc and these little children make us look real bad.

I have BPS Adventurer and Woodlore, both are great. Adventurer has screw-in scales, better sheath including firesteel and modified scandi grind. Its comfortable after I rounded a hotspot at the beginning of the handle where my hand touches steel and also turned it to matt grey with forced patina. Result is just great. Woodlore is just best budget woodlore I could find, no issues at all. Both are imo better knives than this Bushmate

I live in very harsh condition in the mountains of Northern Quebec and I use my knives a lot. I tried BPS knives and they’re OK entry level knives for someone who goes in the bush from time to time but they are not serious bushman tools. Steel and handle scales are ok at best. Scales are shifting badly.

G'day Aaron, the overall design is decent and might be 50 USD, though the fine details do matter. I have 3 Moras, (Companion, Robust & Pro S), for various applications, (admittedly not on the trail and I wouldn't be relying on this one either) ........anyway, all 3 = same price ........ and without those issues. So, together with steel choice, the value just aint there IMO. Re: ferro rod loop on sheath; not diss'n them at all, they do make a lotta sense, but personally, I carry a rod and a striker on their own paracord loops, clipped together, then larks headed/cow hitched around my belt, dangles in the groin pocket, incidentally, without putting any weight at the bottom. This strategy achieves the following outcomes; The rod and striker may still be separated; permanently strung together is a bloody nuisance in use IMO. Changing blades i.e sheaths is a non-issue ....either accommodated rod size, or none at all, ..... nor is an inadequate spine for that matter. The larks head provides 100 % security and the "in pocket" dangle prevents hang ups. Main thing is, If separated from other tools, (and assuming satisfactory tinder), you're always good to go. In fact the only sheath I have with an integral loop came standard with the Bravo 1.5 .......... being a convex edge, I'm look'n around for a small ceramic, perhaps diamond, rod to make good use of it, ...... anyone seen something suitable ?. Cheers Duke.
