I use the grayl with nesting cup. So as an experiment with my 12 year old daughter. I shocked our pool with a large amount of chlorine. The next day we took two samples of water one we ran thru or grayl the other straight from pool. We took both samples to pool store for testing. An excellent comparison review Aaron. (A quick observation: not only did the ding marks not affect pressing but you were still able to press it down even with the air-bleeding "drinking" cap on.) I have been studying the Grayl Geo-Ti for the last few days finalizing my actual purchase set-up and you have been TRULY helpful with this video. Thank you. After watching this video I have decided that the "safest" set-up is actually the original GeoPress and a Toaks Ti 750ml pot (with bail). As much as the Grayl was not defeated by the drop tests, those were not the worst drops that can happen (Murphy's law) and there was an effect on the cup. I think I will keep the actual Grayl unit prioritized for filtering and a separate unit for boiling. Again, very helpful and thank you for the effort you invested for my education.

@davidhawkins8472 ай бұрын
@konakcc Yes, a Purifier is a filter, but a filter IS NOT a Purifier. There are specifications that must be met in order to be classified as a purifier. As I recall, and I may have the sizes wrong, the primary bug removal for filters and purifiers are cysts, bacteria, and viruses. Most Filters handle down to .1 micron, which only covers the first 2. A certified purifier can remove or kill all 3. That's the difference between a $20 Filter and a $200 Purifier. Now, the question is whether you need a Purifier? Supposedly most of North America is virus free, except some questionable sources like a beaver pond. Also, you could opt for a secondary method if worried about contaminants like bleach, etc. But these take time to work. For example it's usually recommended to wait 30 minutes to 4 hours for water you have treated with one of the chemical methods depending on temperature and suspected contamination level.

I guess the deciding factor for me to purchase the 24oz titanium would be "do I want it as a cook kit or solely for filtering and purifying water?" I would "not" buy this as an all in one "cook kit" for useing the boiling water for coffee dehidrated meals, etc, although the option is still there if it is needed. Instead, I would use it mainly to gather and purify water. 1.gather dirty water with a milbank bag and then boil it. 2. Let it cool off and filter it through the press. I would also bring a "separate" cooking container such as a small kettle, cup, pot, etc. That is how I would use it anyway. It would be more along the lines of a normal grayl with a nesting cup.
@markashlock9017Ай бұрын
I think the Grayl is a great purifier/filter. That being said, the Titanium concerns me. Seems like even a “small” dent could allow nasties to slip by the cartridge gasket, especially considering the amount of force and pressure involved. Thanks for the vid. I was really curious how much it would take to dent the Ti, and the answer is not much. Think I’ll stick with the original with my Pathfinder nesting cup. Great Vid!

Personally, I'm always gonna carry a separate SS wide mouth bottle and mug combo along side the original, all bases are covered in terms of more water on board as well as boiling/cooking at the same time. And still covers those survival type attributes; char cloth, digging implement and such You do lose the see through/opaque qualities and the bright colors with this one, if those matter to you. Bottom line; I reckon its a good option, though dont think its worth the purchase if you already have one. Cheers Duke. P.S. I reckon the drop test was indicative of what might be reasonably expected to happen, mind you, I could also see it ending up a lot worse, or multiple dings over time. Yes the seal/gasket has a certain amount of elasticity, though we are talk'n microns here, the whole point of the design to start with.

The silicone valve does not keep water out of the filter. I intended to keep the plug in the filter so that I can use the water bottle daily and have the filter in reserve in case I needed it. Nope, within a couple of days the filter was completely soaked. I contacted GRAYL, they sent me a new silicone plug. I had to purchase another filter and got the same result. Just wanted to give everybody a heads up in case anybody had the same idea as me.

Grayl doesn't have much use backpacking as chemicals are typically not a concern, a sawyer filter and titanium pot are way lighter, cheaper, will last a lifetime if taken care of, and are more versatile. Elsewhere - the initial cost is about $0.88 per liter, and $0.13 per liter for replacement filters. So you would have to filter well over 1000 liters to approximate the cost of just buying purfied water by the gallon, or the entire first filter of 250 liters if buying single liter bottles. Also it takes over an hour of your time to press through the 250 liters, so that adds to the cost as well. Best use case - you are using it somewhere that doesn't have bottled water available, and has contaminated water sources. Then it makes a lot of sense.
@lucemfert469317 күн бұрын
To avoid cross contamination I will never use the same cup tu put unfiltered water and to cook it. So I will take the lighter cheaper plastic bottle and a larger titanium cup to put around (even if it is not a perfect fit, you can make it do by filling the gap with a piece of cleaning sponge) where the cooking and drinking will happen.

I asked the company if I could use food grade silicone lubricant on the O-rings every once in awhile just to keep them fresh and slippery and they said it was okay. The lubrication makes it easier to press down and helps to provide a better seal. If the drop test produces a small ding what would happen if it was in the side pocket of a heavy backpack that fell over with the weight of the backpack added to the force. Especially if it's 40lb+ of weight crushing it. Also did you do the drop test with water inside full weight.

I get concerned by companies using Titanium as a marketing term. If you check a materials website, CP4 Type 1 is an industrial material, not commercial or designed for food. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the type of titanium that is best for food grade. Read up on stuff before you buy it. Secondly, it has to be overpriced if they are now offering a dish set with any press purchase. Its made in China so who knows if it is even really CP4 Type 1.
