Many years ago, I watched this French movie called the Violinist and that's how I was introduced to this masterpiece. That afternoon I didn't want to leave the cinema so sat there for re-run of the movie just to hear this again. And Gidon Kremer played it. Still best rendition. No one matches Gidon. He is really grabbing my entire soul in this piece. Of course, Bach existed before him. Thank you, maestro

My story is similar to yours ... I saw the same film, after listening to the version of BACH-BUSONI by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli on vinyl ... and almost miraculously I found the score for guitar, transcription of Segovia, only a few days later. The score was at home, among thousands of other pieces of music ... At first I read it only with my eyes, without an instrument, I didn't even allow myself to play it ... Then I started playing the first bars and ... arrived at the end, between tears and sweat ... I have not stopped studying it for over 20 years ... My life is in the chaconne, and this interpretation is one of my favorites.

This is no ordinary performance. Gidon Kremer has brought vibrant life to Bach's music in a way I have not heard before. Technically the performance is excellent, but more importantly it seems that not only Bach's deepest feelings are being expressed but also much of Gidon Kremer's own emotions. Overall this is the the most outstanding recorded violin performance I have experienced.

Bravissimo, Maestro!

Problem is almost everyone thinks they know how Bach should be played or Bach played. No one knows for sure. The point is to play the music rather than fret over what is should have sounded like that you will never know. Probably why I am a Gould fan also. I do not like Bach played as if it were a dead man. Bach is alive and this performance is amazing. Every note in tune and beautiful sounding. Bach is not weak or quiet. I love the different colors he gives to passages. and his pacing. I love his recording of the Ysaye Sonatas, just amazing. This reminds me I need to collect every recording he has made. Thanks for this!!

Oh yes, the *back story.* Bach, leaving his 35 yr old wife and seven children behind, had accompanied his employer Prince in one of his multi-month trips to a health spar. When he returned he found that his beloved wife, Maria Barbara, had died and was already _buried_ in the ground. Bach's Chaconne is a crying out to God. IMHO it should be performed in this spirit and Gidon Kremer does it masterfully.

What few seem to note is that this is a very "different" Chaconne than what we usually hear. In many places it is light and dance-like, whereas most artists play these sections with every bit of intensity they can bring to bear. He doesn't always stick to the light dance, however. In some places he shows he can have as much power as anyone. In any event his interpretation is quite unique, and a real pleasure to hear - a very different Chaconne!

this is probably my favorite performance so far due to the technical execution of all of the notes.
